Title: Jimmy Thach's Wildcat
Description: Academy F4F-4

This is Jimmy Thach's Wildcat from the initial engagements at Midway, it was damaged and written off during the battle.

The kit is Academy's decent but very basic kit with Starfighter's Early Wildcats part 3 sheet providing the decals.

One of these days I need to start stringing aerials.

GMTA!

I have a couple Hasegawa F4Fs out now and the same decal sheet, I was planning on one of them in Thatch's markings myself.

Yours looks great!

That's nice. I have all the Grumman cats to build one day. I hope they all turn out as good as that.

Thanks, the Academy's a decent little kit if you can live with the minimalist cockpit and the stand slot in the belly. Not bad for a $6 beginners kit though.

I am planning on doing one of the other aircraft from the sheet as well, probably with the Hasegawa kit as I want to do the one with the tail artwork and it's sized for the Hasegawa kit.

I just finished the Hasegawa F4F modified and finished as a -3. I want to do both Thatch and O'Hare. I wondered what the Academy kit looked like, built up.

Thatch, O'Hare, Carl, Foss, Runyon, Yellow Wings, FM-2, FAA ...

You could build quite a few Wildcats just representing the CMH awardees.

There's a plan...

Nice Wildcat. I've a few of these, but sitting next to my Hasegawa or AZ (or is it Sword?) kits, not built mind you, the Academy kit looks off. Yours looks great, So why do I have that impression?

The Academy kit is off, but not by much other than the aweful prop mounting (which I've hidden via choosing the right angle for photography). It's just that when it's not next to a better Wildcat it is close enough to look the part.

Thanks. Sounds like a replacement prop could do wonders. I'll have to build them up, then. Was considering selling them.
