The Basics
Age: 18, born April 29th 2000

Appearance: Margot has a very gentle appearance that very much matches her temperate personality. Her face is round, and her features are equally rounded so as to be very easy on people looking at her. Her hair, dark brown, is very voluminous and extremely curly, which is why she's always worn it long. She is frequently said to have a "dreamy look."

Margot Blanchard
History:
Infancy
Margot was born to Greg and Megan Blanchard in a small town in central Pennsylvania, United States. Her father was a Professor of History at the nearby Juniata College; her mother was a web designer who worked from home. They lived in a large house on the side of a mountain, which some would call scenic.

As for the Blanchards, they had settled in that house because it was peaceful; when Margot was born, she fit right into that setting of calm. She was a quiet child who didn't fuss if left alone in her playpen for hours; in fact, she rarely fussed at all, to the point that her parents once thought she was mentally ill. The doctors proved that she was perfectly healthy, body and mind, but Margot was always a little bit odd. It was something that Greg and Megan eventually just accepted.

The truth was that Margot never fussed at being left alone because she never felt alone.

Childhood and Adolescence
Because the family lived so far from the nearest public school, Megan and Greg decided to home school Margot, something a lot of parents in the area did. However quiet she was, it didn't seem to affect her intelligence at all. She was a bright and studious child; schooling provided her with books and she quickly became an avid reader.

As she began to read, she began to do research. When she was twelve, she began to read up on the occult and the paranormal--not with casual interest, either, but with the earnest of someone affected by it...because she was. She finally discovered the official name for what she was: a medium. She possessed psychic abilities that allowed her to sense spirits around her, even if she couldn't always see them. She also got "visions" from time to time, specifically when she touched an object or person, in which she would see an event--past, present or future, she couldn't tell.

Margot kept it to herself. It was gratifying enough to finally understand what went on around her. She knew her parents wouldn't believe her either, so she was content not to waste her time trying to convince them.

Megan and Greg home schooled Margot until she was fourteen, at which point they decided that their daughter needed more human interaction than a few home school committee get-togethers and study groups. They sent her to a Catholic private school: St. Teresa of Avila High. The Blanchards were not Catholic, but they knew it was a good school that was close to home and of a relatively small size; they didn’t want to expose Margot to a large school after so many years of relative solitude.

High school is always cruel, but Margot had a particularly rough time of it. She was picked on for being home schooled, being short, being smart, for the way she dressed, and for the fact that she avoided touching things when at all possible. She spoke rarely, usually only to answer questions in class, and sat alone at lunch time.

On top of all of that, the school itself was haunted. Margot was often sent to the guidance counselor's office by her concerned teachers, and every time she was in that room she felt an oppressive aura of guilt. When she was a sophomore, she finally decided to investigate. She reached out and touched the desk during one compulsory session; she was shown the memory (it was a vision of the past, of that she was certain) of a former counselor raping a student on that very desk.

Once the spirit realized that she knew what had happened, it began to follow her around the school. It attempted verbal communication several times, and though Margot could only catch fragments of the sentences she was made to understand that the spirit was the former counselor; that he had regretted the rape every day of his life, so much so that when he died his spirit came to inhabit the office, where it re-lived its sin and kept stringent watch on the current counselor. The spirit wanted Margot to reveal the whole affair so that he could move on.

Margot started bringing a camera with her to school. She made the spirit no promises, but she knew that the first thing she had to do was capture evidence of his existence. She took to randomly snapping pictures of the area around her, hoping to catch him; but he wasn't very cooperative.

The pictures she took turned out well anyway, and her mother began using them in her websites. The school used them to decorate the halls, and Margot began to get a reputation as a budding amateur photographer.

She graduated without freeing the spirit, because she never once caught evidence of him; he was too ashamed to let her take the picture. She decided to go to London, not only to continue her photography career, but because the old city was sure to have plenty of spirits.
Personality: Margot is what would probably be called an “old soul.” She is possessed of an almost unnatural and virtually unshakeable calm that makes her seem much older than eighteen. Indeed, some people have even admitted to being unnerved by her placidity. Margot is a deep thinker who is often slow to speak because she so carefully contemplates her responses. When she does speak, her comments tend to be simple, unelaborated, and occasionally vague. She does not lie, but she will not always tell the complete truth. In fact, one could say that the way she communicates is rather similar to the way ghosts communicate, when they do it verbally: in short sentences that sometimes don’t make sense.

She is a deeply spiritual person and believes in loving and being kind to everyone, as Jesus said; sometimes, however, she finds it difficult. Margot occasionally has trouble connecting with living humans when dead ones tend to be her more constant companions. Somewhat surprisingly, she has a terrible fear of dying; this results from knowing very well the loneliness that consumes many of the spirits she encounters, and inevitably draws them to her. The thing that really makes it strange is that Margot seems to experience no discomfort from being alone, and indeed sometimes prefers it. Not even Margot can explain what the difference is between being alive and alone and being dead and alone; nor does she have a reason for why the latter scares her so much.

Margot is not one to be irritated by most things, because she is so mellow. If problems arise, she simply finds a way to work around them, and if someone tries to argue with her, she walks away. She firmly believes that there are better ways to spend a life than stressing and arguing. However, if there is one thing that makes her upset, it’s when people either do things they’ll regret when they’re dead, don’t appreciate their life, or don’t take advantage of an opportunity for a good experience. Since most ghosts are consumed with regret as well as loneliness—regret for something they’ve done or didn’t do—Margot always tries to prevent people she knows from giving themselves reasons to regret when they’re gone.
