Pureblood Families of Britain and Ireland

BAINES
Baines, a name with a rather ominous meaning ("bones"), belongs to a family that has otherwise produced very amiable people. It is a younger family, only five or six generations old, originating in northern Wales. The family has a well-established place in various Ministry departments, usually Levels Four and Six. Merrick Baines, born in 1949, worked on Level Four for fifty years before retiring and is still considered one of their chief consultants. The men of the family are known for taking foreign wives, usually French.

BALLANTINE
The Ballantine family hails from the Aran Isles on the west coast of Ireland. They've maintained blood purity more by luck than design, because of the isolated wizarding community that lives on the isles in harmony with the local muggles. Their lifestyle is unusual for wizarding folk; the family doesn't mingle much with the outside wizarding community, preferring to maintain a totally independent lifestyle through whatever they can catch, grow, or make on the islands. Their magic is something utterly practical. The family, known as impoverished, hot-headed independents in the modern age, has nearly died out, victims of their own unbending philosophies.

CHRISTIE
The Christies are remarkable in the world of pureblood families simply for being unremarkable. Although they are distant relations of the Blacks, they lack that family's penchant for extravagant wealth and moderate to severe insanity. Native to Exeter, the Christies also own an estate in Fort William, Scotland, where they retreated during Voldemort's rise and return, unwilling to choose a side. Until Jasper, the family was largely upstanding, holding upper level positions in the Ministry or running successful businesses so that they could maintain a lifestyle of comfort, if not exceptional wealth. Known for their level heads, shrewd business dealings, and love of understated style, the Christies have traditionally been sorted into Ravenclaw, and it is rumored that the Grey Lady was a Christie herself. Although he has some distant cousins, Jasper is the last in his dwindling family to carry on the name.

COLEMAN
The Coleman family, native to Sussex, is the sort of family generally overlooked by their peers unless marriages are being arranged and all other eligible bachelors and debutantes are already claimed. They have over three or four centuries maintained moderate wealth and a collectively clean nose, being of a, for the most part, temperate disposition. There have been several occasions, however, of so-called "mild insanity" in the family when a prodigal son or daughter chooses to "experience life" without the restrictions imposed by their unfailingly proper ancestors. These wayward cousins are often used as examples of the wrong behavior for little Colemans across the country.

    Wesley Coleman
DARROW
The Darrow family originated in Scotland near Falkirk in Stirlingshire. However, over the course of many generations they eventually moved south into Northern England finally settling around Spinners End. Although generally considered a hardworking, friendly and resourceful people, they were never fully accepted by the English pureblood families; at first due to their "barbaric" origins, and later to their lack of wealth. Never having been particularly affluent family they hold the distinction of being the most overlooked pureblood family in Britian. In recent years, they have been reduced to poverty and crime.

DE WINTER
The De Winter family track their family tree back through a thousand years and are notorious scholars. Very few of the De Winter family fail to enter Ravenclaw house. They own a large mansion in Surrey and several generations of the family live under the same roof. The De Winters have no particular affiliation, they are proud of their bloodline but they have never been linked to the dark arts. The current generation comprises of: Richard and Marissa De Winter and their five children, Peter, Carly (now Devlin), Julian, Emily and Megan.

EDWARDS
An old Welsh family comprised of the last daughter of the ap Gwyns and the last son of the Edwardses. Noted for their somewhat Dark connections in the past, James Edwards is the only surviving member and is the daughter of French pureblood Yvette Chevalier. The family is most known in recent times for the suspicious and sudden death of two of its members. The Edwards family has a reputation for secrecy and Dark origins though in more recent years that reputation has become more of a reputation for ruthless business deals rather than Dark revels. They were publically opposed to Voldemort's revolution though in secret they supported it as they had supported purist revolution for centuries prior.

EVERARD
The Everards are an Irish pureblood family with a criminal legacy. Their history is well-known to any black marketer who does their homework. There is always at least one Everard working in criminal endeavors, usually in illegal trade. The family’s particular talent is having an eye for distinguishing transfigured rubbish from genuine artifacts. The family lost much of their wealth and almost all the members supporting the Free Blood cause during the Irish Blood Revolution. Patrick Everard and Caroline Everard-Ballantine are the sole remaining members of the family.

FAULKNER
The power behind the Faulkner name came to the British Isles on the back of the Roman Occupation, in the form of a (muggle, althought that fact has been *ahem* lost to history) General who offered the Faulkners, then a modestly wealthy pureblooded family living in Southern Scotland, the political might of the Romans in exchange for their willingness to marry his daughter. The Faulkners then rose to power through the muggle fealty system, accruing vast holdings by taxing their subjects. Since then, the Faulkner name has become associated with wizarding politics and unscrupulous ambition. They are responsible for a number of high-profile embezzlement and purism scandals and are generally unpopular amongst society as a whole. In pureblooded circles, however, they are quite influential.

FEROX
The Ferox family hails from Italy; in fact there are precious few of them in Britain at all. The family prospered during the halcyon days of the Roman Empire, then went underground during the Middle Ages. They came to power once again, in Florence and Rome, during the Borgia Papacy (a downturn for religion that proved a boon to the Magical community) and quickly became rich. In the early 1700s, some of the more business-minded Feroxes moved to America, aiming to establish themselves as important exporters and importers of Magical goods. Further prosperity followed, despite friction between the nominally Catholic Feroxes and the distinctly Puritan or Protestant Muggles they often lived with. Witness to the Salem Witch Trials in America and Savonarola in Italy, the family maintains rigid Magical/Muggle boundaries, though, given the climate in America is very tolerant, it's chiefly cultural (and God forbid they have any intermarriages!), not actually violent. The Feroxes pride themselves on the (false) fact that there has never been a Ferox Squib. Until Calixtus, of course--luckily, his status is not widely known.

    Calixtus Ferox
FLETCHER
The Fletcher family hails from northern England, specifically the Spinner’s End region. In ancient Britain, the family was a clan unto itself well-known for having the best archers on the Isle. After Britain united as a nation, the Fletcher clan turned out fewer archers and more engineers, expanding their expertise from bow-design to other areas. Centuries of bad investments and poor marriage choices, however, dwindled both fortune and reputation for the Fletcher family, and they are now at the very bottom rung of Britain’s pureblood ladder.

GARROW
The Garrows are a Welsh family known for producing charismatic leaders. The family is extremely popular with the entire wizarding community because they are typically loyal and trustworthy…on the surface. However, the family also has a long and well-concealed history of blood purism, secretly supporting purist movements from Salazar Slytherin to Voldemort. Those who are suspicious of the Garrows are often reluctant to make public accusations, thanks to the family’s extensive domestic and international connections.

GRAHAM
The Graham family is one of the oldest Scottish pureblood families. Their name, still spelled Graeme in some branches of the family, is heavily associated with government work and social causes. They're an incredibly social family and tend to have loads of children, which has ensured the survival of the line for so many centuries. However, some purebloods would call them too social, for they have no qualms with mixed blood families and muggles. It is a family which will stand up for others whether it's popular or not. They have been forced out of the country to Ireland, England, and the Americas on multiple occasions due to their opposition to purist causes. Grahams have distinct dark hair and eyes which consistently dominate the gene pool, wherever they may live.
ROBARDS
One of the older British wizarding families still pure of blood, the Robards have over the generations moved from being on the wrong side of the law to the right. Ever since Gawain Robards became an Auror during the formative years of the ministry the Robards name has been synonymous with excellence in law enforcement and dedication to the wizarding community. With seven kinsmen having held the coveted position of Head of the Auror Office the Robards with their wealth and ministry influence hold some leverage over the wizarding community. Their dedication to the purist movement has been kept hidden from their peers, but their unwillingness to marry outside of the blood and the increase in hate crimes while a Robards holds the position of Auror head points towards a pacifist purist movement on their part. They would be to polite to ever admit to such a sentiment however.

SNIDGETON
The Snidgeton family is a relatively new South English pureblood line; they achieved pureblood status with the marriage of Donatienne Deveau, a woman from an old French line, to Euclid Snidgeton in the 1950's. They probably won't be remembered for anything besides idiocy. Della Belle Snidgeton, Donna and Euclid's daughter, got herself pregnant via a charming Italian wizard who disappeared and never confirmed his blood status. She was married off to the first person that would take her (a lazy, no account muggle-born wizard fifteen years older than her called Aristaeus White). Donna and Euclid's son Francis is now fifty and shows no inclination towards marriage, much less children. It is presumed that this new pureblood line will disappear as quickly as it appeared.

    Carmen Snidgeton
SUIJEN
Not exactly an ancient pureblood family, but a pureblood family nonetheless. The Suijens first hailed from America, but in recent generations have migrated toward England, thanks to one Adam Suijen's marriage to Jill Turner, an American-born witch who was raised in Britain. The family doesn't stand out very well, as the Suijens don't do much that attracts attention. They aren't particularly barbaric, they aren't aristocratic, they're just...there.

    Marshall Suijen
TORRENT
The Torrent family is an old Irish family that's been breeding magic folk for a minimum of sixteen generations. They are a partying family and tend to have a legacy of running the best wizarding nightclubs in Ireland. Traditionally, the heir to the family would be placed in an arranged marriage and, whether male or female, would keep their last name. This is due to the unfortunate habit of them marrying their opposites, stern, hardworkers and being forced to leave the nightclub business. The perfect example is James Torrent who married the Japanese scholar, Daichi Saskia producing Mikazuki and Shizue. Since neither of them were heir to their family name, no one actually cared that much but both children are free of the worry that they might be placed in an arranged marriage.
