Title: A Crisis...?
Description: open
Sydney Browne - November 15, 2008 10:09 PM (GMT)
She walked down the hall towards her office door. It had been a long day and was going to be an even longer night. Yes, there would be hell to pay, especially if you were a certain Ambassador to the French Ministry. "To think I was the one that trained her. That bimbo can't do anything right. Now I have to send some owls and hopefully defuse this entire situation." Sydney muttered to herself. A few employees looked up as her as she spoke and then quickly turned their heads back to their work. When Sydney was annoyed, she was annoyed and you did not cross her. There was a reason she had been working for the Ministry for almost a century and it wasn't because she talked about rainbows and butterflies when dung hit the fan.
Sydney's pace slowed as she neared her office. Composing herself she glanced around to make sure that there was no one other than British Ministry workers present and then she spoke. "As I'm sure you all know, the Ambassador to the French Ministry has lost control of her staff. Her personal sectary was caught in bed with the Senior Undersectary's daughter. Everything else you are working on is now on hold. This is your main priority, see that this situation gets resolved. I will be in my office and I expect an progress update within the hour. That will be all" It still amazed her how she could command the attention of this room simply by entering. Perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise, but she rather liked it that way. The surprise let her know that she still had the kind of work ethic that got her hired in the first place.
Turning, Sydney continued to walk toward her office. Yes, the night would be long, but it would be worth it. These were the kinds of moments that made her feel young again, the kinds of moments that reminded her why she loved working in this office. Finally, having reached the scantuary of her office, Sydney settled into the black leather chair behind her desk and began to review the files and reports that had been left there. Sydney smiled when she saw the first one. "Eliza," she called, thank you for getting me the report on the Bulgarian Junior Undersectary so quickly. Keep of the good work.
Sydney paused as she opened the first page and looked out of her office, through the giant double doors that were always open when she was in her office, at all the witches and wizards hurrying around at he task she had just set them. Her staff was dedicated and she was proud to work them. For a second, the suggestion of a tear formed in the corner of her right eye, and then it was gone and her head was buried in the report in front of her. It was time to work after all.
Ron Weasley - November 16, 2008 01:25 AM (GMT)
“Actually you shouldn’t be surprised at what data can be found in our files down in Level 2, since you ran the place for a time I believe,”[ said Ron Weasley as he leaned against her open doorway. “Your Eliza is indeed resourceful. She apparently is aware of the diverse places that data and information can be gleaned from in the Ministry. I do hope that it is not an intrusion that I elected to deliver the information personally,” he said with a quizzical expression on his face.
Ron, as usual these days, had actually been looking for a good reason to escape from his offices in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. After Potter had disappeared he had taken a self-imposed leave of absence. He had actually not really considered whether he was going to go back to the Ministry to work, let alone as Deputy Head of the Department of MLE. He had received a persuasive argument from the Assistant to the Department Head to return, and so he had. However, since he had returned he had felt not so much ignored as not being part of the loop.
He just had quickly developed the feeling that he was unessential personnel now. Its not that he didn’t have work …. He was buried in paperwork almost continually, but it was not really representative of what his early career as an Auror had been, or what he thought his future would be, serving with Potter. Life had this nasty habit at throwing curves at you. But Ron’s problem right now was figuring out if he just wanted to pick up his broom, give up the game, go home, and start all over again, doing something else. “I don’t know if that file is related to what you just made the big pronouncement about, but it does seem to be that you folks are quite busy up here right now. However, I suppose this is where you tell me its none of my business, and I should go back to my Level, eh”
Sydney Browne - November 16, 2008 03:27 AM (GMT)
A small smile crept across Sydney's face as Ron started speaking. Its about damned time that boy did something else besides paperwork. She thought as she continued reading the file in front of her. Even at her age, there were still some things that surprised a person and some this particular undersectary's habits certainly did surprise her.
Placing open file on her desk, Sydney looked up and leaned back in her chair in one fluid movement. The man standing before her was a shell of his former self and while in cases that could be a good things, especially if one was trying to create a spy, but this was not one of cases. Sydney sighed softly before she began to speak. "Its good to see you out of that little office the boys put you in on your level. From what I hear all you do is paperwork and if I know anything about your department, that is not what you should be doing. Alas my dear, isn't being in charge just so much fun?"
It was there she paused. Clearly he had not come down here simply to hear her commiserate with him about the woes of being in charge. Perhaps it was time go get to the heart of the matter instead of talking in diplomatic circles like she was trained to do. "Actually, and I'm guessing here, so please correct me if I'm wrong but—Dennis I know you want to update me but as you can clearly see I am talking to the Deputy Head of the Magical Law Enforcement Department. Perhaps later would be a better time if you don't have anything more crucial to tell me other than the fact that Ambassador Shepard's personal assistant has indeed gone of the radar. And that is probably because he is scared shitless of what I am going to do to him when I get my hands on him. No I didn't think so, thank you for reporting in like a good little boy. Now get back to work!—where what I, oh yes, you didn't come down here just to commiserate with me about how boring being in charge actually is, now did you? She said pausing for the first time since she started speaking. It was good to have young people in this field but Dennis was overeager and overeager young people made Sydney's skin crawl. So what if she was a bit of legend that doesn't mean you have to become a blithering idiot when ever you opened your mouth in front of her.
As Ron continued to speak, Sydney smiled again. Yes, the boy was here for other reasons. That was a good thing. "They are unrelated but thank you for your concern. This is just a report on a top ministry official in Bulgaria, and this crisis is about Ambassador Shepard's inability to control her staff. And Ronald, this is most certainly NOT the part where I tell you to go back to your department. No, this is the part where I tell you to take a seat and talk to me about whatever it maybe that brought you down here tonight. I am here to listen to what ever you have to say." Sydney replied as she closed the file and sent a memo to her personal sectary that was stationed just outside her office, that she was not to be disturbed until the Deputy Head left.
Ron Weasley - November 16, 2008 05:24 AM (GMT)
Ron was just a bit amazed that she didn't shush him away. She had appeared to be perusing the file in front of her intently. The way she looked up and leaned back in her chair, and the little smile on her office, seemed to beckon him into her office. It was almost as if she wanted him to explain himself.
Ron stood there not really knowing what he should do or say. He expected she understood how uncomfortable he was. So he stood there and listened to the things that she was saying. About halfway through he began to shake his head back and forth. "I never wanted to be an administrator-in-chief, but Harry seemed to think it was the way to go. I was always good at strategy, but not in academic analysis, more in work out in the field. Anyways, even though I was moving into more administrative work, I always looked at it as one of my responsibilities to watch out for Harry."
"The way I looked at it, on the day he disappeared, I looked at it as a failure on my part. Then they began suggesting that I take over for him. It would have been natural for me, moving back from administrative work to more field work, but I just couldn't entertain the thought of replacing him, so I took some leave time, and I really didn't even entertain the thought of going back. That is, until Will Channing came out and convinced me to come back, and I did."
"However, when I came back, I didn't appear to be needed, except to take the paperwork load off the Department Head and his assistant. So, whenever I get the opportunity I take my escape from the Ministry, like today. The point is, nobody wants me to do anything and too many are too afraid to say anything to me. You see, I'm Potter's man, so I'm looked at as being untrustworthy by the new regime, but at the same time they are afraid to sack me outright because it will look like they're trying to get rid of any traces of him, " he sighed. "I just feel like I'm in an impossible situation. And no I don't think its all that much fun," he laughed and shifted over to the offered seat. "It does look like you are quite busy here today, and I don't want to throw you off your game, but I would be interested in any advice you have to give. Just understand, I have even considered leaving the Ministry altogether."
Sydney Browne - November 16, 2008 08:15 AM (GMT)
At first she had thought he wasn't going stay, let alone speak, but he had entered and sat down. Yes, this was going to be an interesting meeting. It wasn't often that one got the chance to talk to one of the people that had a hand in defeating Tom Riddle. She had run into Harry from time to time but they had always been brief instances and of that she was glad. She had her own career and he had his, there was no real reason for them to work together. But sitting before her now was not Harry Potter, but rather Ronald Weasley. He had always seemed like a follower to her before they had met, but after that initial meeting, Sydney had realized that Ron and Harry operated in much the same way that she, Jane, and Edward did, as siblings. From that day on, she had newfound respect for Ron.
As he started to speak, Sydney noticed faint signs of relief that the poor man was finally able to let out everything he had been holding in. Never wanted to be one of the administrators... well tough beans there boy... when your good at your job and famous to boot you almost always end up as one. She almost interjected but was soon glad that she hadn't. This man, was perhaps one of the most talented wizards of his age and he was ready to just give up and that was just plain wrong. Something has to be done about this administration before they completely destroy this place. Perhaps I should march myself over there and have a work with that department head... remind him that no one is above the Wizenamgot and that one of there jobs is to ensure that the Ministry runs as well as it can. Well that was stretching the truth a bit, don't you think Syd? But the spark of fear might help things out a bit too.
He had finished speaking a few moments ago and the only thing Sydney could really do was sit there and stare. He can't be bloody serious... he can't leave the Ministry... it would destroy him more than staying will. Besides, he would be declared a Rogue Wizard in no time and this country simply can't handle a thought like that. No, he must stay on, but what can I possibly stay that will make him stay? Come on Syd, THINK!! Oh yes, I think I got it and... and now would be a good time to start talking before the thinks that you were just being polite and don't really give a damn.
"Well that was certainly an interesting speech you just made but there lacked a certain amount of zest that I thought would have come with the last statement you just made. Alas, my expectations were not met." Sydney stated in a dry voice. Sarcasm was one of her favorite modes of speech and one that she employed often. She paused, but for a brief moment to compose her thoughts, before she spoke again. "I would just like to point out, before I go too far, that you did ask for this advice and that when I give advice, I tend not to sugar coat it." Looking up at Ron, Sydney saw that that was something he was expecting to hear. His eyes were clear, always a good sign that someone was listening. Continuing, Sydney said, "First of all I could give a shit whether you wanted to be in an administrative position or not. Frankly, that has nothing to do with the situation you find yourself in. You are in a position of power, use it. You do not have time for all of this self pity about how you just want to be an Auror again and let other people take care of the rest. Grow up and get on with your life!!"
"As for the Harry situation, you and him are basically bothers and if I know anything about family, he would disappointed in you for simply doing paper work. The regime that is currently running the show does not have anywhere near as much power as they think they have, not by half. First, they can not afford to fire you, let alone let you quit. You are Ronald Freaking Weasley, Deputy Head of the Magical Law Enforcement Department, hero of the public, best friend, nye, brother of Harry the boy that lived Potter. They have to keep you on board. Second, you have friends in high places that would be happy to speak up for you and that the current regime would not even dream, let alone think of trying to touch, let alone manipulate. Third, I don't really think you need me to go on. But I will anyways. Third, use your connections and seize control or change departments but make sure that you are the head of the new department. For instance, you could take over the Transportation Department and you could even take a small staff with you. You know, a few Aurors and some sectaries. Make yourself into whatever you want, but whatever you do, DO NOT LEAVE THIS MINISTRY!!" Having said her peace, Sydney once again leaned back in her chair and waited for Ron's response.
Ron Weasley - November 16, 2008 02:34 PM (GMT)
Ron had not intended on spilling his guts so completely when he had decided to stop by her office. But once he got started he couldn’t stop, it just kept coming. And even then, he didn’t tell her everything. At the end of his little outburst he quickly sat down in the chair that had been offered, though in truth he quickly slouched and slumped down in it. He had only met this high and long-serving ministry official a few times before, and she had always been most polite and respectful with him, but he had absolutely no idea what she really thought of him. An if she had thought highly of him before he expected that, as a result of what he had just said, that her opinion had probably been downgraded considerably.
He understood that as a mid-level Ministry official he should just suck it up and accept his lot in life at the Ministry. After all, he didn’t have it so bad. He had a good position in one of the leading departments at Ministry, a good income, with relatively low expectations, other than the flow of paper and forms in and out of his office. Besides, if it was too much, he expected that he could ask for a transfer to a departmental position with even fewer responsibilities than he had now. He wondered if, on second thought, if they would ever really agree to him leaving the Ministry. It would probably be too much of a public relations disaster for them to allow. First, they lose Harry Potter, and then another of the Aurors responsible for the demise of Voldemort asks to quit …. Not bloody likely he supposed. Now, however, it was his turn to listen to her words of wisdom. She had stayed silent for a significant period of time, and her face had an unusual undecipherable look on it. He wondered what she was really thinking. Then, he thought to himself, he was about to find out.
"Well that was certainly an interesting speech you just made but there lacked a certain amount of zest that I thought would have come with the last statement you just made. Alas, my expectations were not met. I would just like to point out, before I go too far, that you did ask for this advice and that when I give advice, I tend not to sugar coat it."
Well, that’s because he didn’t find any of this particularly appetizing, Ron thought to himself, so why would he approach it from any kind of zestful point of view, he wondered …. Not too bloody likely!
"First of all I could give a shit whether you wanted to be in an administrative position or not. Frankly, that has nothing to do with the situation you find yourself in. You are in a position of power, use it. You do not have time for all of this self pity about how you just want to be an Auror again and let other people take care of the rest. Grow up and get on with your life!!"
First of all, he was pretty shocked by her blunt language and turn of phrase. It was like he had been whipped across the face, and he stood up immediately. He leaned forward across her desk with his hands gripping its front corners. “This was a freakin huge mistake to come to you with this. Frankly, it has nothing to do with what I wanted but with what I am best suited for and productive in. Power! I am in a position of paper …. a paper position. The only reason that was called back to do meaningless work was so that I wouldn’t be an embarrassment to the department and/or the ministry by having Harry Potter’s best friend and sidekick refuse to report for duty. That’s their whole brilliant point of view and perhaps yours.”
"As for the Harry situation, you and him are basically brothers and if I know anything about family, he would disappointed in you for simply doing paper work.”
“Of course he would have been disappointed in me, but he would have been disappointed in the whole operation and its reaction to the whole deal. As far as the present regime, they may not have that much power, they have more than enough to deal with me. They just have realized that they are not in a ‘political’ position where they can just get rid of me …. it would cause too much self-inflicted damage. I imagine that I do have a lot of power, but if I were to exercise it, it would be more likely to divide the department and Ministry, rather than unify it. So, it appears that I have a considerable amount of power …. Unfortunately it can only be used in a destructive manner,” he shrugged. “You see, I serve out the function they have laid out for me. I realize now that I have the power to change that if I wish, but that power would be destructive and divisive. I have asked several times to sit down and discuss what my role should be, but I have been ignored. It appears that I am both feared and loathed by the same people at the same time. In many ways they can’t live with me, but they can’t live with out me,” he laughed darkly. “Fear not, I will not leave the Ministry. I have never wanted to be anything but an Auror. I will stay where I am, biding my time. At some point maybe there will be a change of regimes, and my difficulties will be solved, or maybe I’ll lead a revolution. But, for now, I’ll just accept where I am. I don’t really think that I have a wide range of options do you …. really?”
Sydney Browne - November 17, 2008 12:41 AM (GMT)
Sydney was quite taken aback by the fierceness of his reaction. When one asked for advice or someone's opinion on a subject such as this the one thing that she had always been taught was that you do not get excited when you reply. Ron was most certainly excited and not in the good way. Well this was not exactly the reaction you were going for but it certainly works. Now if only there was a channel this energy into something a bit more productive than yelling at an old woman... then we might actually get somewhere. Now Syd, you just have to change the attitude in the room and... The aged witch pondered as Ron continued to speak. Do I really think he has options.. not of course not... I only said that to make him feel better... what kind of bimbo does he take me for??? No more of this...He had finally finished speaking and in space of mere seconds the room went from the warm welcoming atmosphere that Sydney did her best to maintain at all times to one of cold death. Her once inviting eyes were now blazing ice.
Outside of her office, there was an auditable difference in the noise level. She would have been able to hear a pin drop near the entrance to her staff's offices. Yes, Sydney Browne was not pleased and when Sydney was not pleased, her employees knew to tread quietly. Clearing her throat, she began to speak, "No Mr. Weasley, I don't think you really have any of those options. I was merely trying to make you feel better. Do you feel better? Inquired Sydney, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
There was nothing but silence in the offices outside hers now. Yes, she was not pleased by the turn of this conversation, but perhaps there was something more to all of this than the man was letting on. One just did not know what people were thinking or really feeling after all.
Before Ron had a chance to formulate a reply, let alone speak, Sydney had begun to deliver her message to him once again. "I think that you may have misunderstood some of what I was trying to say. Please pardon my lack of patience at the moment. The situation in France could not come at worse time, legistlatively speaking. Then, she paused for a moment as if to collect her thoughts and it was then that the length of the day truly caught up to her. It was past 8 p.m. and she had been in the office since 5:45 that morning. The cold left her eyes and weariness replaced it. It had been a long day for her and she now realized that it had been an even longer day for her staff, most of whom had either not left the night before and those who had, had most likely slept for only a few hours at the most. "Please excuse me for a moment." That was it, that was all she said and without waiting for response, got up from behind her desk and walked to the doorway that separated her office from the rest of the suite she had been given when she was appointed to the ICW. "It has been a long day for all of us. I am hereby initiating the rotation. You will all work in shifts, and yes, that does include you too Parker. All of you except Parker, Eliza, Dennis, Tom, and Addison are to sleep for at least four hours before returning to work. Thank you for your hard work."
When she finished her speech, Sydney turned back to Ron and continued where she had left off. As she spoke, she returned to her desk and once more settled herself into her chair. "I'm sorry for the digression. Now where was I.. oh yes. You don't need to to talk to anyone about your position. An administrative position is what you make of it. You can let the paperwork pile up or you can arrange the system so that you are working with a small team, gathering information, ensuring that the department runs smoothly, and still doing what it you want to do. But I'm sure these are all things you have already thought of. I am not trying to belittle you Mr. Weasley. I merely want you to wake up. When you snapped at me after I told you not to leave the Ministry, you spoke with true energy, albeit, there was concrete passion, but there was energy. I merely want you to channel you energy into something else besides confusion and distress. I sincerely hope that you understand what I am trying to say."
Ron Weasley - November 17, 2008 01:38 AM (GMT)
Ron realized, as usual, that he had overstepped, and had raised his voice in a way and an environment that was grossly inappropriate. "I beg your pardon and offer my sincerest apology. That was no way for me to address you, as a Ministry official, or in front of your staff. I asked for your advice and you gave it to me in a straightforward manner. One of my great flaws or weaknesses is that I tend to respond emotionally, without much forethought. It is, undoubtedly, one of those characteristics that don't serve me well when I am working in an administrative capacity. Besides, these are issues that I should have taken care of myself, without burdening anyone else."
He had noticed quite quickly that her attitude as evidenced by the look in her eyes had changed for the worst. Also, the effect of their conversation had progressed well beyond the sturdy walls of her office, since he could here the silence that had developed there, undoubtedly awaiting her explosion. "No, I don't feel any better at all, but it does allow me to look at my situation with more clarity. I do recognize where my place is, and question it in the future, at least not so noisily," he smiled thinly.
"I also should have recognized that you folks have already been devoting long hours in a long day to more weightier issues than mine, that should have a higher priority. I should have recognized this, an not interrupted you in the manner I did ..... again .... my apologies. I am sure that you have some more pressing issues tto attend to ..... so this might be a good time for me to take my leave."
As he stood there, he recognized that he was not in a position that he could be extricated from. His fame meant that they would be unwilling to ever displace him or sack him, but they're fear of what he would do meant that they would never give him any real authority or power. If the Ministry were ever threatened by some type of exterior threat they might appeal to him for his assistance. However, otherwise, he would just have to be satisfied with his paper-shuffling duties, while developing interests in other areas, since he knew now that the powers-that-be would never let him quit.
Apparently, everyone thought he was just too dangerous if he were outside the Ministry. He smiled to himself at the irony of the moment, as he sat slowly down, at least for a moment. They had defeated Voldy, had helped reform the Ministry and renovate Level 2, and this was their compensation .... indeed it was an ironic turn of things. It was good that he was a Weasley and therefore had a great ability to laugh at himself and life itself, and actually get the joke, appreciate it and continue to move on. He shook is head with a slight smile. "Are there any other words of wisdom, sarcastic or otherwise, that you have for me to consider or contemplate?"
Sydney Browne - November 18, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
Clearly she was not having any success getting through to him. Maybe another time, or maybe not. There just isn't enough time left in this day that I can commit to him. No, there is not. He does not want to hear what I am saying, so he simply doesn't hear it. Now Syd, you can't beat yourself up over this. Perhaps it would have been best if had just left instead of coming in. Yes, that would probably have been best, but there is no way of changing that now. Nope, no way at all! Having reached her decision, Sydney knew that what she said next must be, if not calm cool and collected, then at least peaceful or perhaps civil was a better word. She had a place of power within this Ministry and so did this man, but he did not understand that and it was not her place, let alone her job to make him see that.
"There is nothing else I can say. Either you can hear the advice I have tried to give you or it can all be ignored. The choice is yours." That was all she said. Nothing more and certainly something less. Her tone had be civil and without emotion. Her posture was neither welcoming nor frosty. She was the perfect picture of indifference.
She didn't wait to see if he left or not. Sydney Browne had moved on with her life and that was that. Nothing he said or did could change her current state of mind. As far as she was concerned, the meeting had ended when she had finished speaking. There was simply no point to it anymore. She had a very busy day ahead of her at this sleepless night and she was sure that he had better things, well if not better, then at least things that needed to get done.
((ooc: sorry its so short.))
Ron Weasley - November 19, 2008 01:11 AM (GMT)
Ron stopped as he reached the doorway and turned around. Should he stop and say something or he should he just leave. Obviously he had not solved anything or moved his issues closer to resolution. "Obviously, ma'am, you are an individual of significant authority as well as experience. I thought that wealth of experience could be used to solve my problem. I was mistaken .... it is something that I should have never raised with the Ministry .... it just sets up red flags of warning around Ron Weasley. However, I would have thought that you would have known better than to suggest options to me that didn't really exist, but only as a means to 'make me feel better'."
"You see, part of the problem is that I always saw my future attached to a cause or to a person, so there really isn't a 'something' I want to do or become. It would be better if I was assigned some mission or duty overseas than to stay here. I have no charge or stated mission to accomplish, other than just to be Deputy Head. Others are fulfilling duties I would normally be responsible for. I have no channels and therefore no power to make decisions that would cause my area to run more efficiently. The way I see it I have 3 options: to stay and do what I'm doing now .... reading forms and filling out efficiency reports, resigning from the Ministry, or going on a mission overseas.
The only possibility as I see it now, is to do the absolute minimum required in my position, and to basically freelance in my spare time. There is absolutely no interest in allowing me to utilize the skills that I was trained to, so why fight it. At least it will keep me in the Ministry, and that's what is important, right. Thanks, after an especially-long day for you, you have cleared it up for me what my role should be .... perhaps as a resource person on how the Aurors and Level 2 have reacted to crises in the past. Imagine that ... me giving out advice. Thank you for your help .... good-bye ..... and the best of luck with those crises I interrupted."
He knew that what she wanted to do was to keep him in the Ministry. He hadn't the foggiest idea why, since they would never utilize him for anything. He knew that what she was saying was that he should enlarge his activity in Level 2, establish a niche for himself. He understood now that the confines of the present System and structure of the Ministry were too confining for him to cause much positive change. He had only had a lot of personal success outside the Ministry, or when given enormous latitude to operate by the Ministry. Unless they were in a wartime situation he knew that would never happen, and he would have to be satisfied with a more 'shadow' role .... maybe even considering it to be an 'extra-ministrial one. Yes, it would be good to be perceived as a conformalist within the Ministry .... it might lead him naturally to the possibility of a different role in his off-hours. This could get interesting, he thought to himself.
Sydney Browne - November 26, 2008 08:49 PM (GMT)
He had left her a office only moments ago and already she knew a possible to solution for his dilemma. He could work for her. Yes, that was certainly a possibility and one she should have thought of before. Standing up, Sydney pulled or her wand and placed in on her throat as she walked to threshold of her office. "Mr. Weasley, if you are still within hearing please ponder this. You could come and work for me. There been a steady flow of people transitioning from Level 2 to Level 5 even before I did it. I would be happy to work with you and help you anyway that I can if you to choose to do that." Sydney's voice echoed throughout the level due to the spell she had cast prior to speaking. Hopefully this would work to attract his attention. If it did not then she had tried her best and that was that. Turning, she walked back to her desk and resumed her work. The time was now well past 11:00 at night and she really needed to figure this situation out before it became more complicated.
((ooc: Roe... i know it is incredibly short but it leaves the door open if you want to reply you can... or not... its up to you.))
Ron Weasley - November 29, 2008 08:35 PM (GMT)
Ron had of course heard the message that Sydney had sent. How could he not? He had indicated that he had only seen 3 options that were available to him. Obviously, this was a 4th. However, it was an awfully open-ended request. Did she want him to transfer outright from Level 2, or was he just to do work for her on am as-needed basis? He needed to send an Owl at any rate. He tried to think carefully over what he wanted to say and transmit to the high Ministry official. He re-entered his offices in Level 2 and sat down to write the first of what he imagined would be several messages on this subject
Ms. Browne:
I wanted to send you this Owl to affirm that I had received your short but pointed message. Are you asking me to transfer from my position in Level 2 or to request my use on an as-needed basis from Level 2, or for me to take a leave of absence from Level 2 to your area? As such, would I be assigned particular duties, or not? Then there would be the public issues of an outright transfer. These are not practical issues. My current duties in Level 2 revolve around the completion of stacks of paperwork. Of course this could as effectively be done by secretaries within that area. How, however, will the political and psychological aspects of such a transfer be handled? We have discussed the fact that the Aurors within Level 2 have not been handled or dealt with very well or very effectively. How would such a transfer of the 2nd-in-command of Level 2 be looked on by the leadership of the Ministry, as well as the rank-in-file Aurors within the department. Will the transfer of one who is tied very closely to Harry Potter, as well as a blood traitor be looked on positively, or negatively, or neither, by the wizarding community. Or will it be looked on as being of little consequence by everyone. As always, I look forward to your thoughts.
