Childhood
Sioned Murron Baines (pronounced SHON-ed; half the time she just tells people to call her Shon) was born to Merrick and Solange Baines in 1980. She was their “miracle child”; after the birth of their first child, a son named Marcus, they had tried unsuccessfully to have more children until Sioned came along nine years later. It was out of this that Merrick chose her name, which means “God is gracious.”
Her young years were passed happily in their family home in Wales. They were not a wealthy family, but they lived comfortably and respectably. Merrick worked, like most other wizarding fathers, in the Ministry. He served for fifty years in the Being Division on Level Four, devising legislature and compromising among races. Solange, who was French and very traditional, was a stay-at-home mother for Marcus and Sioned.
Marcus left for Hogwarts when Sioned was just two years old, so she grew up somewhat disconnected from him, though she did eagerly await the stories he’d bring with him every summer. He was twenty years old when she got her own letter to Hogwarts, and he was the one who accompanied her to Diagon Alley and then to King’s Cross Station. He and Sioned were both ready to make up for lost time by bonding over their schooling.
Hogwarts
Sioned was sorted into Gryffindor, upholding the family tradition. Marcus had been well-liked in school, so Sioned had an easy time fitting in with older students. Once the children her age got over their jealousy, they were just as willing to be friends with her.
She was a good student with a good work ethic, taught to her by her father; Merrick constantly told his daughter that problems got bigger the longer they were put off, so it was better to take care of them as soon as possible.
Adulthood
Marcus, now twenty-six with a wife (French, like their mother) and newborn daughter Judy, was working in Level Six for the Portkey office. Upon her graduation he got Sioned a job in the same department. She worked there for a year, during which time she entertained several outlandish ways of killing herself. Realizing that the Portkey office was not the place for her, she transferred to Level Two and entered the Auror academy.
She received her hit witch license at age twenty-one and went right to work, rounding up the last of Lord Voldemort’s sneaky followers. Unfortunately, that job was finished up relatively quickly, so Sioned and the other hit witches and wizards began to loan their services out to other countries. Some of this was done publicly, some of it wasn’t, but for the next sixteen years Sioned bounded around the globe, returning to England rarely and briefly. Most of this time was spent in Latvia and other Eastern European countries, where certain wizards were trying to rustle up vampire gangs. Frequently, Sioned wrote Merrick for advice on dissolving the situation.
When she was twenty-five, she married Andris Jansons, one of the Latvian Ministry men she was working with. He was a magical theorist who was helping the vampires to develop better wards and seals for their homes to keep rustlers out. Both Sioned and Andris had more than one enemy—people who were against their work, which was in favor of protecting the vampires’ interests—so they tried to keep their marriage as secret as possible. A year later, Sioned became pregnant. At Andris’ insisting, she left the Baltic swamps for Wales.
Three months afterwards, she miscarried while running a simulation for academy students. Upset and longing for her husband, she returned to Latvia to look for him. When she arrived, she discovered that he had all but disappeared. After a brief search for him, which ended when her family’s life was threatened, she threw herself into her work. She stayed in Latvia, hoping that something would turn up…but it never did.
She returned to England in mid-September, 2018, after getting a letter from Marcus about the murder of his daughter, Judy, and the unveiling of a massive Ministry conspiracy. This was also the first she heard of Harry Potter’s disappearance, having been in the Latvian forests for four straight months meeting with vampire coven heads.
Personality: Sioned is not the sort of person who gets riled up easily. She has an even, judicial temper and can keep a cool head in a crisis, which is one of the reasons she makes such a good hit witch. Her patience is boundless, a trait she inherited from her father. Whether it’s a stake-out or an argument, she rushes nothing and is rarely frustrated. All of this is coupled with a deep faith in humanity and a dedication to preserving the inner goodness of people. Sioned has been called, among other things, “incorruptible,” and this wasn’t always meant in a good way.
Sioned is cheerful and pleasant, seeing no point in spending a lot of time unhappy; being unhappy, she says, is counter-productive to living. This idea comes from her mother Solange, who would tell her that frowns and tears took time off one’s life. Admittedly, there was one negative effect from this speech. Sioned has a very hard time letting herself cry when she needs to. Luckily, she rarely feels the need! She doesn’t like to let problems stew long enough to make her feel that bad, preferring to deal with them immediately when possible.
Romance is not particularly important to Sioned. She’s gone on dates and had relationships since Andris’ disappearance, but she hasn’t since felt the same overwhelming devotion to one person. Sioned is the type who devotes herself to everyone, so it could be said that it’s difficult to inspire it in her to the extent of love.
