History:

Family History

The Pepper family story begins with the marriage of obliviator Beryl Fipps, to Junior Minister Francis Pepper. Beryl was unusual for gaining qualification as an obliviator in a time when women who joined the Ministry became secretaries. She was a petite woman, with a sharp nose. Her husband became Minister for Magic after a successful run as Junior Minister. The pair had three sons, George, Phillip and Henry.

A fourth son, the adopted Terrence, came with his name. He was adopted to show some compassion towards Muggle born witches and wizards. Terrence was such, abandonned by two Muggles, his mother possibly forced to. Terrence was vastly different to his adopted brothers. They all had their mother's sharp nose, and the combined intelligence of both parents.

George reached heights in the Wizengamot. Phillip followed his father, and Henry became a skilled Auror. Terrence shunned the Ministry. While growing up, the reason for his adoption came clear. However, he was a skilled craftsman, and became an apprentice to a magical clock maker.

It was during this time he met Janet Collins, a fellow apprentice. She was a squib, and so empathised with muggles. The two were wed, and Terrence set up shop crafting ornate timepieces. Their children, Johann and then Emily, were healthy and happy.

Johann was a wizard, and Emily a squib, like her mother. Johann automatically latched to his father as a wizard, and learnt the trade. However, as a Muggle enthusiast, he tried to influence the Ministry, and earned a name amongst those who disagreed, as a trouble maker. Emily followed her mother into apprenticeship, though in fabrics. She never married.

The Hooke family began with the marriage of Henry Hooke, a Hogwarts teacher of Herbology, and the Muggle Grace Hewitt, a painter. Grace went on to become famous in the Magical World for her plant drawings and 'Muggle style portraits' popular in households that occasionally entertained Muggles. It avoided the non-magicals begin alarmed by moving paintings.

Their daughter, Ariel, became an apothecary, also interested in plants and potions, like Henry. Her brother, Sebastian, chose to become a quidditch coach and player, which baffled his family. Some said that Grace had courted another wizard.

Sebastian met healer Viola Twelfth, while visiting a player who was in St Mungos for a few months. His frequent visits led to frequent offers of a drink. Eventually they married. Viola had two sisters, Clara, also a healer, and Theresa, who was not very bright and worked in the Magical Menagerie, as she was a squib.

Their parents, Thilbalt Twlefth and Patricia Parkinson were both Magical. Patricia a writer, and Thilbalt a healer like two of his daughters.

Together, Viola and Sebastian had four daughters. The youngest, Belle Hooke, died before she reached her 5th birthday. Her elder sister, Violet, had a broom accident at 15, which left her in St Mungoes until her death 2 years later. The two eldest, Melody and Faith, survived. Faith became an educator, marrying Muggle writer, Adam South. Their only child, Alexandria works for the Ministry. Eldest daughter, Melody, became a singer on the WWN. She married Johann Pepper, and had two sons, Felix Bartholomew and Octavius.


Nuclear Family & Childhood

Barty's brother, Octavius Terrence Sebastian Pepper, was born when Barty was 2 and a half years old. Up for three and a half years, the two children lived harmoniously, until their mother, Melody, was taken ill. She gave up her job on the Wizarding Wireless Network, and recovered slowly.

Felix and Octavius would attend lessons with eight other magical children, taught by a rosy faced witch. She taught them maths, and English, and other topics useful to them, in preparation for attending Hogwarts.

At Hogwarts, Felix was sorted into Ravenclaw, and Octavius into Hufflefpuff. At 16, Felix achieved OWLs in Transfiguration, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, Muggle Studies, Arithmancy and Potions. At 18, he completed NEWTs in Muggle Studies, Transfiguration, Charms and Defence Against the Dark Arts.

During his sixth year, Felix asked Natalie Ardenne to dance at a Ravenclaw party. She had long blond hair, and pretty blue eyes with freckles. After the dance, a seventh year boy hexed Pepper's nose off, jealous. However, Natalie witnessed it, felt sorry and helped Felix. Their relationship lasted from May to the summer, where it fizzled out, with the distance.

Phillipa Batts was a brief and rather fruitless relationship in his seventh year. She was a fifth year, with a crush. They lasted five days, merely because she realised her crush was more of a fantasy than a reality.

Adult Life

After leaving Hogwarts in 1996, Felix worked for the Ministry for five years, creating time turners, like his father and grandfather. They take so long to make, that he made fifty during this time. His work was admired by others there, and he was approached by the Department of Mysteries, who wanted to recruit him properly. He turned them down.

Instead, Felix has spent his life creating pieces, and researching. He is on good terms with the Committee on Experimental Charms, and regularly meets with them to share research.


Married Life

Felix married Caroline Amy Pepper nee Hurst when he was 36 (2014). They met at a Christmas party, held by the Daily Prophet. It appeared that anyone reported on during that year had been invited (within reason). She found Pepper's view on Muggle science refreshingly original amongst the high fliers and limelight addicts.

Caroline works as a Wizengamot Elder, and they have been married for four years. She was a Ravenclaw at Hogwarts (graduating in 2000), attending four years behind Barty, she was a prefect and then head girl. She has two Muggle brothers, Peter and Samuel. Like their parents, Catherine Wessex and David Hurt, they are farmers. Eldest child, Samuel, married a Muggle wife called Penny Cooper, and they have two daughters, Laura Hurst (5) and Gayle (8).

Pepper is also a member of the Wizard's Jigsaw Society.


Personality:

Felix is content with his life, self-sure and confident about his knowledge and opinions. He knows his strengths and abilities well, and can rely on his research and experimentation skills to succeed. That said, he rarely sets unachievable targets, and is a realist, despite strong ambitions. His key motivation is previous achievement, and excitement in what he is doing.

Barty hates to let people down, he takes responsibility very seriously, and won't betray his beliefs, or the trust of another. He understands the importance of teamwork, and fair management when working with others, and prefers to share responsibility where possible. Unfortunately he can come across as overzealous and stubborn, and can fall into the trap of not considering he could be wrong. His wife tries to encourage him to listen more, and compromise. He needs to balance things, though often doesn't make it alone.

Privately, Barty fears expressing emotion, and rarely shows extremes of emotion unless around those he deeply trusts (usually family members). He is fightened of rejection, and as such was not overly concerned with friendships as a younger wizard.

Felix enjoys jigsaws and gadgets, tinkering with old relics and fixing things.

Appearance:

Felix has always dressed well, in fine wizard materials, though not in a flamboyant way. He pales in comparison to the likes of Gilderoy Lockhart (though who doesn't?), and would look worn besides the likes of Lucius Malfoy. He has a liking for Victorian fashions, wearing cravats and neck ties, waistcoats and velvet jackets.

Pepper's hair is naturally curly, and brown, flattening more in wet weather. Occasionally it sports some singed ends. He inherited it from his father, along with his clear blue eyes, which are regularly trained upon scientific instruments. His face has become more tired over the years, though has a gentle expression, and a smile that lights up his eyes.

He is not a particularly tall man, standing at 5ft 8, and of seemingly average build, his nervous energy as a scientist keeping down the weight, along with forgetting to eat while concentrating. His hands have long fingers, that are nimble for their size, and are frequently scratched, burnt or marked with oil during the day. Pepper always carries a fresh handkerchief to wipe his hands.
