Title: Sleeping Next To Yourself Is Strange: Felix Pepper
Description: Magical Scientists (Time turners)
Felix Pepper - January 10, 2009 10:53 AM (GMT)
Welcome to After Graduation! Why don't you tell us a little about yourself?
Hello, my name is Kit, (though equally I'm around in rpg land as Kate.) I'm 22, 23 in not so many days, British, working as a web developer in my first graduate job. I spend my days writing css, html, asp, correcting website copy and sending financial emails to 13,000 people a day. No, not individually! I've been rping for around 10 years, and was really into Potter until I went to uni when boards died, or I resigned. Got hooked back in a few months ago, and I'm now teaching DADA and inventing how Arithmancy and Cursebreaking link, to teach that to trainee cursebreakers at a University, set in about 40+ years ahead of here. Only rpging can cover such weird things.
We love you already. <3
Now that you've told us about yourself, why don't you tell us about your character? Here's a quick summary sheet to make it easy.
Describe your character in less than a paragraph.Muggle sympathising 40 year old with curly hair, whose talent is in making the ornate and magically complicated time turners. Married to a NP (though see below) he's currently working independently, as he finds the Ministry restrictive.
What's your posting style like?I will try to fall into the style others are using. If its comical short posts, I will aim for that, if its OTT description dripping in the five senses - meh, I'll do it, as long as I'm not dragging the plot by myself. My creative side dies at seeing posts by near illiterates, and I'll avoid them like the plague. (I currently have a kind of stalker on another board who posts this way!)
What sort of plots or roleplays are you interested in? Serious or light? Long-term or short?Felix's initial character creation was for a plot set between HBP and DH, where he had sent his Muggle born wife away to hide, and was claiming they'd seperated. He was being forced to create time turners and train others, which gave him a precarious position of being useful to both sides, despite his muggle sympathising.
However, that's been swapped over for here, but I'd be really interested in dealing with both sides of the coin in AG's plot.
- Creates time-turners which the Ministry, or very fortunate are able to buy (their price is dictated by the time, workmanship etc)
- Market equally open to all sides.
- Muggle sympathiser
- Currently married to a wife who I'm not looking to play - however, if anyone would like to offer themselves as an alternative, I can rewrite to put them in.
- Due to a lack of a son, he will be looking to recruit an apprentice.
I adore getting wrapped into other character pastlives - from working alongside each other previously, to friends of the family. I hate the whole 'popped out of nowhere' feeling new additions get quite often.
Fantastic! Now I hope you've prepared yourself. You're about to be bombarded with welcomes and thread requests from many wonderful roleplayers.
Patrick Everard - January 10, 2009 08:07 PM (GMT)
Hiya Kit! Spiv here. We have met briefly in the Cbox; I'm one of the co-admins here on AG, and we're very pleased to have you! Anyhoo, I'm 19 and American, in my second year at college studying English Literature and Professional Writing. I've been roleplaying for around five years. I'm glad you're used to weird things, because things can get strange around here (metaphysics!).
My characters are numerous!
Lucy Ballantine, age 29. Her husband is Dermot Ballantine, a legislator for the Department of International Magical Cooperation. She is an Irish Muggle-born and a former Free Blood revolutionary who teaches Muggle Studies at Hogwarts. Having already had plenty of “adventures” and life experiences in her youth, all Lucy really wants to do now is settle down with Derry and have oodles of children.
Logan Fletcher, age 26, is a former Unspeakable now looking for employment in the private sector; his brilliance makes him cynical of the menial life he now lives. He developed the Fourth Unforgivable, but was released in exchange for his testimony against Edward Garrow, who commissioned the spell from him. For months Logan had ignored the moral consequences of a curse that steals someone’s soul; when he met Artemis Sinistra, she awakened a new side of him, a side that saw ethical right and wrong, instead of just intellectual right and wrong. Though Logan is still in love with her, he doesn’t have high hopes for a relationship in the aftermath of the trial.
Edward Garrow, age 29, was formerly the Junior Undersecretary of the Ministry. He commissioned the Fourth Unforgivable, the Dementor’s Kiss Curse, buying theories from Calixtus Ferox and giving them to Logan Fletcher to develop. Prior to the scandal, he was a charming and well-liked politician, but his true colors have been revealed. He has a massive temper, is a raging alcoholic, and is obsessed with his wayward wife, Ivy Ballantine. It was at her trial, on charges of breaking and entering, attempted kidnapping and assault, that the tables were turned and evidence against him was put forward, resulting in his arrest and imprisonment.
Will Channing, age 25, is the assistant to Benjamin Astbury, the Head of Magical Law Enforcement. You’d be hard-put to find someone who hated or even disliked Will Channing. He’s friendly, cheerful and generous, always willing to help out anyone who needs it, even outside his department. He’s a great listener and loves hearing out people’s problems, but he has trouble returning the favor and confiding in his friends. He's a member of an unofficial "Boy's Club" featuring Jasper Christie (black market criminal), Apollo Sinistra (fashion guru) and Atlas Caedmon (lunatic). As the Head's assistant, he tends to show his face just about everywhere on various Level Two errands.
Constance Fallon, age 24, is a no-nonsense Auror. Her world view is very black and white and she has a rude and abrasive sense of humor. Her family was murdered in her seventh year, which is why she became an Auror; she was originally set on becoming a Healer. Con has a heart buried somewhere under all her Scottish temper, but she has very little experience with relationships, platonic or otherwise, and so she has a definite barrier up against certain levels of intimacy, though the men of the world seem to be doing their best to knock them down—like Roscoe Blaine, the ex-stripper she went for an impromptu watery romp with.
Patrick Everard, age 20, is pretty ambitious, coming from a long line of successful criminals. He is a criminal Jack-of-all-trades, but usually works as a middleman for buyers and sellers of artifacts. Regardless, he's very charismatic and a lot of fun, as long as it's playtime and not business time. He has a job at Dervish and Banges but is also sort of an unofficial curse breaker for the Russian Syndicate, a crime mob operating out of Knockturn Alley. He was sort of dragged into it when they caught him smuggling cursed golden artifacts into England without their say-so. He stays because of his intense feelings for the beautiful mob boss, Aleksandra Mikhaylova.
Margot Blanchard, age 18, is a Muggle with the capabilities of a medium. She is calm, intelligent, and American (three things that don't often go together); she's traveled to England to pursue a photography career and also to develop her connection to the "spirit" realm. She’s currently employed by Atlas Caedmon as Rudolph the skeleton’s translator and babysitter.
Wesley Coleman, 50, is...very hard to describe. He's a freelance journalist who likes to write satirical pieces that only he finds the humor in because it either offends people or goes over their heads. His conversation is much the same way; he's a jovial and fun-loving jokester, but his jokes are usually made at the expense of other people.
Sioned Baines, 38, is a hit witch. She's been called "incorruptible" among other things, mostly because of her excessively naive and unswerving faith in the fundamental good of humanity. She spent the last sixteen years in the Baltic region staving off clashes between wizards, veela and vampires by hunting down and apprehending instigators and poachers. Her return to England was the result of a letter from her brother, Marcus Baines, regarding the murder of his daughter Judy by politician Edward Garrow. Her current goals include ensuring that Garrow is properly tried and getting the Department of Magical Law enforcement back on its feet.

How's that for bombardment, huh? ;)
As for plot possibilities, I think there are a couple, especially in the area of an apprentice. For this, I lay both Logan and Patrick on the table. Patrick does repairs of magical items at Dervish & Banges, and would certainly leap at an opportunity to learn how to make Time Turners...though he would probably use the knowledge to make them and sell them illegally.
Logan, on the other hand, would see it as a chance to stay involved with magical science while staying away from what he sees as the "corrupting influence" of the Ministry. I think, personality-wise, they would be pretty compatible, and Logan would admire Felix for his confidence: Logan's own confidence has been almost completely shattered by recent events. Logan could really profit from a role model like Felix.
There's some possibility of a friendship between Felix and Sioned, since she was a year behind him in Hogwarts. She was in Gryffindor, but she was extremely friendly and spoke to just about everyone.
Let me know what you think! :D
Felix Pepper - January 10, 2009 10:52 PM (GMT)
Brilliant, thanks for that.
Re: Patrick
I would guess the dark would very like to know how to make their own Time-Turners. Pepper has quite probably sold one to them along the way, and they may see the potential to have someone else making them within their group. Also, I doubt Felix is all that popular with them for his Muggle views, but they tolerate it for what he produces. Patrick might be a way of cutting out Felix altogether sneakily.
Logan has similar views of the Ministry to Felix - that they meddle and interfere with good research. I'd see him as more of a choice Felix would make if he had to pick between just these two. I was tempted to say that he might take on both of them, but probably not. Alternatively, he might be forced to take on Patrick - blackmail or whatever.
Knowing Sioned from their Hogwarts days would be excellent. I understand she has spent a long time out of the country, though, so they could either have lost touch or corresponded through that time. I'm tentative to suggest the latter, with regards to the reasons she returned. Either way, I would be very open to them knowing each other, and Felix would be curious to hear her tales from abroad.
Think I've addressed everything... I'm still reading around the site, and was actually really interested in the whole fourth dimension tear. I would imagine the time turners possibly add to the strain too.
Thanks very much for posting back!
Logan Fletcher - January 10, 2009 11:10 PM (GMT)
Patrick wouldn't blackmail Pepper into teaching him; he owns two Time-Turners already (one he stole, and one he inherited from his father), and if someone he knew needed one he'd be more likely to try and figure them out himself. He's handy and clever like that. Whether he'd succeed or not is in question, but he'd certainly try, haha.
I think it would be great if Logan became Felix's apprentice. He's really at a loss for anything else he can do in the so-called "private sector." He's wealthy enough that it wouldn't be an issue, but he'd probably go insane without something to do. How would they get in touch? Would Felix advertise for an apprentice?
Correspondence during Sioned's time abroad would have been difficult, since she spent a lot of that time in swamps and forests. But I am certainly up for them reconnecting! After the shock of hearing about everything that's been going on while she was abroad, Sioned would definitely enjoy a nice chat with an old friend.
And time turners would definitely add to the strain! Another interesting dimension (no pun intended) to consider. ;)
Calixtus Ferox - January 11, 2009 11:25 AM (GMT)
We need a scientists' club. Seriously, they're getting nearly as populous as the criminals (well, most of them are the criminals, but hey).
Oh, yeah--hi, there. I'm Sam, 21-year-old Phil/Eng. major. Nice to meet you.
Anyway, I'm not sure what plot we might have, and I'm going to England for ten days in about a week (very excited, yes), but I'm up for whatever. I have two characters I think might work:
Cal Ferox. Spiv mentioned him. To make a long story short, he's an independent Squib researcher, specializing in potions and theoretical (and time) transfiguration. So the field's similar. However, while he does publish in credible quarterlies and such, he works mostly for the criminal element (see Shallah Kosa and her terrorist group). Logan knows he's up to no good, since he worked for Garrow, too, so that's... something. Let's see, what else... oh, he's 30, just came out of the closet, and in a relationship with Jasper Christie (obsessive love on his part, not exactly reciprocated--he's so healthy). Oh, and he's a drug addict.
I've also got Nick Preston; I suppose I could say Dr. Nicholas Preston, but that's only on the job. Anyway, he's a 43-year-old Muggle psychiatrist living in the Magical world because, until recently, he was married to a Witch. He has 13-year-old son in Hufflepuff. I mainly made him so characters could come and get therapy, but he needs some friends, too.
Just thought I'd throw that out there.
We need a grouping of scientists. We should have a convention. I just RPed one in New York, but it was all NPCs.... anyway... ha. Could have a magazine. Or publish in James Edwards'.

Re: Patrick
My mistake - blackmail on the mind having resurrected Pepper from his original setting. Apologies. So, scrap that - but if he's curious, then there's no harm in him asking a few questions, rather than becoming a proper apprentice.
Re: Logan
Resigned to the fact Pepper isn't going to have a son any time soon (or at all), looking for an apprentice is a delicate issue for him. He'd had loved to pass it on through the family, but as its not possible he's now looking out of a dedication to his craft. I hesitate to confirm an advert - but after mentioning it to clients or friends verbally - he might well place an advert. If Logan hasn't heard before, then he would by then.
Re: Sioned
Excellent. I will have a proper concentrated read of her profile in that case, to ensure I don't turn out to be a clueless friend!
---
Hi Sam! Glad you've posted, as I came across Cal's character when I was reading around, and thought hurrah! Advanced welcoming to England - wrap up warm, as we're going through a cold snap (hovering around freezing) - though how that compares to where you're from, I don't know.
Re: Cal
Pepper's heard of him, certainly through what he writes - and would offer collaboration with his theories - or curious discussion. I'm afraid the limitations of my assistance with proper solid theory - might be hazy. The sexuality wouldn't put Pepper off - he's more interested in the mind and the research.
Re: Nick
Certainly friends! Pepper needs a few named Muggle friends for sure, so I'd be very happy to oblige. Was his wife his first contact with the Magical World? I'm just trying to have an idea of how they met (or - if you prefer to have them meet instead, I can sort that out with you)
Re: Scientists Group
Perhaps a Guild? (though the definition of Guild might be a tad stretched) One of the perks being the ability to submit items for publication in the Guild magazine - which could be read by non members too perhaps? Non members could contact them for advice or services required, which could bring more links in. It would be a good tool to carry through the dimensional tear element of the plot, I'm sure.
Calixtus Ferox - January 11, 2009 01:02 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm sure Cal could know him professionally, but he tends not to associate with people unless necessary... he's very socially awkward. I'm sure I can think of something, though.
Nick was unaware of the Wizarding world until he not only met but married his wife (that was some fifteen years ago). However, he's made a lot of friends among Wizards since, and sees them in his practice. His wife might know Felix tangentially; she was in school just above him.
Scientist's group was a joke :P. I don't know if I like the sound of 'guild', really... hm... Spiv/Carmen, what do you think?
PM or AIM (or MSN) me if you like, so I don't clutter your thread. Bear in mind I'm going to be pretty busy and then I'm off to England, but I'll be back in Feb.
