History: April came into the world on January 10th, 1992; born to Benjamin and Caroline Rutledge. They were your typical British parents: stodgy, and full of potential.
This was the appearance that they kept up in public settings, and to muggle Londoners it was assumed that it was their only appearance. But from behind closed doors it was a very different scene. A toddler that brushed her teeth without using any hands: and a mother who washed the dishes without even being at the sink. April’s father however, was excluded from this picture. Being a non-magical being himself, he preferred to do things the muggle way.
From an early age April developed her mother’s passion for all things magical. It was not hard to stretch her imagination to another world when so many possibilities had already planted themselves in her mind from her mother’s lessons and stories. Her father likewise educated her; teaching her to be studious and aware of her surroundings. April’s mother prepared her for the magical world, and her father showed her how to adapt to the muggle one.
When an expected Hogwarts letter arrived with April’s name on it, there was nothing but beaming and bouncing all around the Rutledge home. April was sure that her hopes of Hogwarts would not be disappointed. Even Mr. Rutledge couldn’t stop his own excitement from bubbling over. He was involved more than ever now, and exceedingly proud of his two witch woman-folk at home.
Her first years at Hogwarts were her best years. Happily sorted into Ravenclaw, she immediately fell into comradeship with all of her housemates. It was not hard to make friends in such a warm and family atmosphere like the one that Hogwarts provided. With all sorts of knowledge and information that she never could have imagined at her fingertips, April dived willingly into her magical education, keen on knowing all there was to know.
Her later years in school proved to be just as filled with schoolwork as ever. April’s love for knowledge of magic increased, and there was never a time that she felt out of place in her surroundings. Hogwarts had become her home when she was away from home, and she was constantly excited for the chance to prove herself academically. Being the only child in the Rutledge family, the same excitement could be used to describe her parents. A constant victim of their lavish praises and sincere love made for happy summer vacations, and a close-knit family.
April’s graduation from Hogwarts came far to fast in her opinion. There was still so much more knowledge to be gotten, and feeling a little unconfident and inexperienced to take on the vast wizarding world on her own, she quickly threw herself into an easy job of no importance. There was—as she had convinced herself—plenty of time to get settled into a proper job.
But as time went by, she grew less timid and dissatisfied with the mundane. She knew her passion was magic, and she intended to pursue all of her options.
An application to the Ministry was all she needed to be accepted. Work at the Department of Mysteries was most certainly grueling work, but it was a challenge to April if anything, and she quickly set herself about her tasks; taking pains to outdo herself. The constant exploring and discovering of magic’s mysteries kept her exceedingly content, and work proved to be more than just a diversion.
Personality: First and foremost, April is a workaholic. To her, the very thought of leaving a job unfinished would be unbearable. Whether it takes hours, days—weeks even, it wouldn't matter, she'd be at the office until things were set straight. Needless to say, in her career already there had been several late nights and coffee marathons. The necessity for all her work to be done thoroughly is maybe even a little bit obsessive at times. On asked about her working routine she might tell you that the floors at the Ministry weren't made for sleeping on.
Calm and rational, it is perhaps her cool self-assurance that is more often than not the rescuer of her brainless mistakes. Her knack for taking action before sitting down and thinking has gotten her into more than one scrap, and if it weren't for the glasses, her frequently careless comments might have earned her more than just unfriendly scowls.
It's in April's nature to be a recluse, and sadly this behavior is sometimes overly misinterpreted as snobbery. That isn't to say that she isn't friendly, or doesn't have a set of her own friends, but it isn't hard to see that she would prefer solitude to social butterfly. Being as withdrawn and distant as she is, April gives to most the impression that she would rather be somewhere else.
But give April something that she's passionate about and she'll be as spunky as they come. Her love of studying magic's unknown comes from a secret romantic spirit; full of longings too not only examine and evaluate things, but to go off and explore the bizarre and exoticism of the world on her own.
There isn't much charisma about April, but underneath a thick layer of quiet and mousy manners, there is a lot of pluck about her. When the things she cares for most are put into jeopardy she always finds the time to do her part. Call it a code of honor if you will; it’s her thought that everyone needs a liberator, even if they come in such a strangely wrapped package as herself.
Appearance: Standing at an immodest height of 5’11, April can hardly be considered a midget. It is certainly difficult to be bookish-looking and intimidating at the same time, and what with a pair of fitted black spectacles, she unknowingly invites the former view. While slim, she is more athletically built; sporting defined and tightened features. To her greatest dismay and inconvenience, a prominent upper chest, and an annoyingly curvy waistline.
To add to her somewhat already masculine persona, she has a fairly boyish walk. Her particularly long legs permit for her to take larger strides than most folk, which in turn lead to a terrible habit of hunching over. It’s very unlikely that she would walk any daintier were she to wear high-heeled shoes, believing them to be merciless weaponry, only designed to give sore feet and twisted ankles.
Perhaps one of the only qualities of April’s that allow for others to recognize any femininity in her are the soft and mellow green eyes that peek out from beneath her monstrously large forehead. It’s those eyes of hers that keep people from falling asleep at her conversation.
Middle-length mousy brown hair makes for a brutal morning beauty routine, but some things just cannot be undone. Usually worn in a bun to avoid useless hours in the bathroom. A button-sized nose sprinkled with freckles affords her some much-needed cuteness, and small pink lips make their presence known with bright colored lipstick.
Her typical everyday attire consists of mostly outerwear—anything from long coats to business suits. You wouldn’t find much out of the color range of black or gray in her wardrobe. It’s her thought that it’s better to be underdressed than over-dressed, which can definitely be observed from her choice of clothing.
