History: Born to Muggle parents in remote Inverary, Scotland, Peter Shaw was the second and final child in his family. Peter's parents, Jim and Miranda, were shocked when they discovered that his older sister, Rebecca, was a Witch. She displayed an aptitude for magic at a young age, initially causing them intense confusion, which turned to pleasure when they realized what a talented child they had. When Peter arrived six years later, they were on the lookout for signs of magic immediately. Unfortunately for Peter, he has magic but no aptitude. Although his parents encouraged him, even hiring a private tutor to help him, it became apparent quite quickly that Peter has virtually no magical skill. On a good day, he can boil water and maybe force out a Lumos, but he's just as likely to turn your foot into a newt with a poorly placed Leviosa.

In the mean time, Rebecca excelled at Hogwarts, especially in Charms and Occlumency, a rather rare gift. In spite of the differences between them and the rather significant age gap, she and Peter remained close. He and his parents also developed a strong relationship, especially once he was home alone with them while Rebecca went away to school.

Much to their disappointment, and to Peter's, the headmaster decided that he wasn't cut out for education at Hogwarts. However, they refused to let Peter feel second rate in comparison to his talented sister, and encouraged him to excel in Muggle education, working hard so he could afford to attend a prestigious boy's school. Peter did excel, especially in the sciences. He also continued to study magic with Rebecca's guidance, in hopes that he could at least hone his skills to be functional someday, and found that he enjoyed theory, if not practice. In his last year at Glenalmond, he came across an unusual paper on magical theory that Rebecca sent home from Salem. Theory seemed like his gateway into the magical world, and he desperately wanted to meet the researcher behind the work. However, some snooping led him to little more than a Cambridge contact and a name: Ferox. After Rebecca filled him in on some American gossip (that Ferox himself wasn't too good at magic, rarely showed up at academic events, the like), Peter decided he had to meet the someone who could be his mentor and maybe, finally, teach him how to use magic usefully. His parents were, of course, thrilled when he was accepted to Cambridge.

Personality: Although he could have sulked in his room for most of his childhood, given the magical slighting that genetics doled out, Peter was a happy child who grew into a happy young man. Unconditional parental affection tends to do that. Although he has a positive outlook on life, he's fairly shy. Years of covering up his magical tendencies in Muggle schools and friendships have made him more reserved, plus he's naturally uncomfortable in crowds. That said, he was never a loner, and always managed to make a few friends who thought he was slightly batty, but funny and good at maths. He's dreadfully awkward around girls, even though he'd quite like to date one. It confuses him completely that some girls find his awkwardness charming. He goes on dates very occasionally, but has never had a serious girlfriend. He gets significantly less dates in Cambridge because A: There are more than four boys in the town and B: No one can understand his accent.

Peter has an unfortunate tendency to start talking and not know when to stop. His mind associates one thing with the next, and suddenly you've heard all about the time he was eight and went to Fort William with his Nan to buy red and white trainers. Some find it endearing, others want to rip their ears off. "Others" largely include those who aren't Scots, since his accent is fairly unintelligible to the uninitiated. He is almost compulsively helpful, and often fidgety. In his free time he enjoys long walks around the loch (seriously, he likes being outdoors), and cross stitching. Yes. His nan taught him. Shut up.

Appearance: Peter is only 18, and he looks his age, as though he is still growing into himself. His hair is generally a little longer than it should be, a leftover quirk from the time he and some friends at Glenalmond decided they would be loads cooler if they started a band. (That failed when they realized they couldn't even play Smoke on the Water, but the hair lingers.) He has large eyes and a general lack of fashion sense that results in a virtual uniform of worn in jeans and much-washed polo shirt (a reminder of his prep school days). He moves energetically, which is easily mistaken for clumsiness when a quick movement knocks something over.
