History: Gabe was born to Joceline Maugan when she was just sixteen years old. The child was conceived while she was on winter holiday in England after a…rowdy night with some male strippers at her cousin’s bachelorette party. Joceline was able to finish her sixth year at Beauxbatons but her pregnancy prevented her from returning for her final year. Gabriel Adolphe Maugan was born on September 8th, 2001.

Joceline’s family, traditional and pureblood, ostracized her for keeping the baby. She moved in with a similarly exiled Squib aunt in Paris and got a job as a waitress in a little café nearby. The aunt died two years later and left Joceline everything in her will. The estate was not a wealthy one, and Joceline couldn’t afford it on her waitress’s income. Being an extremely attractive young woman with a good figure, she became a stripper. The glamour of the lifestyle was what had first attracted her to Gabe’s father, who seemed to embody it, and above all else it paid very well, especially as Joceline began to get a reputation.

The only problem was that there was no one to babysit Gabe while she was working. She couldn’t put him to bed and leave him on his own. The child slept very little and seemed further to adjust his sleeping schedule to his mother’s, napping more during the day and staying awake through the night. Finally, having no other options, Joceline took him to the club with her, where he was watched in shifts by the girls backstage. This arrangement continued until Gabe was eight years old and able to stay home alone.

Gabe displayed maturity early on; he was rarely fussy and seemed to understand that he and Joceline were always on the brink of poverty. He began helping out wherever he could around the house or the club as soon as he was old enough, doing small chores and such. When he started school he did well with the academic material. Dealing with his classmates, however, was another matter. He wasn’t used to sharing, and he didn’t like talking to the other children. He was picked on for being quiet, and when taunted to the breaking point of his restraint he often insulted his peers, saying that he didn’t want to talk to them because they were so stupid and self-centered. In his older years, he was teased because his mother was a stripper and he got into several physical fights defending Joceline’s reputation; he was always very protective of his mother.

Though Joceline was hopeful, Gabe never displayed any real magical talent. His heritage showed itself in small ways—he could pick locks with exceptional ease and seemed impervious to stains—but he received no letter from Beauxbatons inviting him to study magic. By that time, it was too late to hide magic from her son, since she’d readily used it around the house for eleven years. Gabe didn’t display any outward disappointment, and the discontent he kept inside soon disappeared. His interest in the magical world had always been slight, since his mother had severed almost all of her connection with it and it was rarely spoken of.

When he was fifteen he got a job as a janitor at the club where Joceline worked. His mother was then thirty-one and not getting the tips she once did. But Gabe had another motivation for getting a job: he needed money for a pet project that he’d taken on. One night he’d been sitting backstage with the girls at the club and one of them, a new girl come in from England, told him that he looked exactly like a male stripper she’d worked with in Britain. She even had a picture of her and said stripper, whose first name was Ross.

Armed with the picture and the first name, Gabe secretly hired a private investigator to find the man. It took two years because the infamous Ross seemed to have no roots, no set location, no nothing—but he was eventually tracked and discovered to be living in London. With that established, Gabe showed his mother the picture. After several moments of shocked silence, Joceline confirmed that the man in the photo was Gabe’s father.

Gabe left that night for London.

Personality: Gabe’s defining characteristic is probably his stubbornness. Once he sets a goal or objective for himself, he will doggedly pursue it against all obstacles and generally ignoring the consequences of his perseverance, good or bad. He’s also incredibly independent, and his mulish attitude lends itself to perpetuating his autonomy. He refuses to accept help from anyone unless it’s absolutely unavoidable, and in such a situation he will voice his displeasure excessively.

He’s very outspoken with his opinions, which are usually not favorable. He points out the mistakes and flaws of others without much hesitation, which he learned to do when being teased as a child. His mother told him more than once that they should be forgiving and not sink to the level of their aggressors, but Gabe doesn’t see it that way. Rather than sinking to their level, he says he is demonstrating their own foolishness to them and teaching them the impact of their behavior.

His intelligence takes its form in ingenuity and resourcefulness. He can usually see how to turn almost any situation to his material advantage. He’s very handy with tools and that sort of thing and can build and make repairs easily. He’s extremely thrifty, almost to the point of being miserly; he doesn’t buy gifts and won’t accept them.

However abrasive or stingy he might seem, comfort is one of Gabe’s chief concerns, both his own and the comfort of the people he cares about. Currently, only Joceline is in the category of “people Gabe cares about,” but should someone new work their way into Gabe’s young heart they would discover that he is extremely dedicated, loyal, and constantly striving to ensure their happiness.
