History: Eltanin was born to Ascella and Dabih Wemyss in a small community on the Isle of Skye. The birth was a difficult one, and when the midwife finally held up the wriggling baby, Ascella was exhausted. Dabih was disgusted; even at that small age, the child's misshapen foot was evident. The child was to have been Dabih Junior, but Dabih swiftly decided on Eltanin instead, sticking his own name as his son's in-between name.

As Eltanin grew, he often wondered why his cousin's parents acted so different from his own, on the rare occasions that his aunt and uncle came to visit. Ascella had almost no maternal instincts--Eltanin was told several times growing up that he had been "a mistake" and his leg was "a punishment" for having been born unwanted. It was usually Dabih, who showed open disdain for his gimpy son, who said these things, although when sufficiently pushed Ascella said them too. As a result, Eltanin began to think all parents were like this, at least when other parents weren't around, and subsequently had great difficulty talking to them.

Eltanin once told his cousin Kuma that while his parents were emotionally abusive, they had never been physically abusive. Strictly speaking, that was untrue; Ascella tended to slap him when he asked her for something, such as a meal or a kiss or a bedtime story, whereas Dabih rarely came into the house without aiming a backhand or kick at his son, who would limp off in a hurry. Eltanin, however, felt that he deserved these things and remained silent.

Despite their actions, Eltanin loved his parents, so their deaths came as a crushing blow to him. His father had decided to take his family to visit a friend, who lived some ways away on the other side of a hill. Knowing four-year-old Eltanin's limp made it difficult for him to get around, Dabih deliberately decided that they would walk. Eltanin hurried to keep up with his parents' pace, but going up the hill was just too hard for the child; he had to stop and take several rests. As he reached the top of the hill, a car sped past him and careened down the other side, out of control. Ascella and Dabih reached the bottom of the hill at the same time as the Muggle driver did, but they were going much more slowly and didn't get out of the car's careening path in time. Dabih was killed instantly; Ascella died on the way to the hospital.

Eltanin's aunt and uncle got him from the police station and took him home with them. His cousin, who was exactly his age, kept asking him if he was okay, and if he had been hurt by the car. Eltanin's face, at the time, was a mask of anger, and he had told his cousin that the Muggles had killed his parents on purpose; he hated them for years afterwards. But later that night, when his cousin heard him crying, Kuma Wemyss climbed down from the top bunk, sat next to him on the bottom bunk, and cried with him.

Eltanin and Kuma were rarely apart after that. The two grew up together; Kuma nicknamed him Nin, then the Wizard of Oz, while Eltanin calls his cousin either Ku or the Wicked Witch of the West. When they turned eleven, Eltanin was invited to Hogwarts, while Kuma was sent to a school of magic in America that her mother had graduated from. Determined not to let the distance stop them, they bought each other owls to send letters to one another. Eltanin sent his cousin a number of homesick letters, telling her that he found his housemates and classmates difficult to get along with and that he spent most of his time curled up in corners reading books or writing.

His third year, however, all that changed. Following a Quidditch match--which Eltanin never attended--the house staff threw a party, for despite the team's loss they had played well. Eltanin was curled up in a corner reading, or trying to, and did not get out of the way before the party started, so he was forced to stay where he was--because of his misshapen leg, he was shy about walking in front of his housemates and often stayed where he was rather than show it to them. Eltanin found himself laughing at the antics of a group dancing near his chair, distracted from his book; one girl detached from the group and asked him why he wasn't dancing. He summoned his courage and showed her his leg. She told him it didn't matter and dragged him into the group. They ended up slow dancing when one of the girl's friends changed the music.

That was how Eltanin met Kiley Blair. The two dated for nearly a year, and it was Kiley who introduced him to his fellow housemates and got him out of his shell. He watched her in the remaining Quidditch matches of the year and developed a liking for the sport. By the end of the year, however, they had begun to drift apart, and they broke off the relationship amicably. Shortly afterwards, Kiley chose to leave Hogwarts.

The change in Eltanin had been wrought, however, and he began taking a more active interest in the house. He started helping new students coming into the house, and around Christmas of his fourth year, when interest in the Slytherin Quidditch team suddenly and dramatically dropped, he volunteered to help out and wound up playing Chaser for the remaining two matches of the year. He also joined the newly-formed Broomstick Racing team as a medic; through that he made a couple friends in two of the other houses. The summer before his fifth year, he was awarded the Prefect position for Slytherin House.

His leg had been bothering him for quite some time, and his friends and family finally convinced him that he needed to spend time in St. Mungo's. The misshapen leg was amputated, and he was given a magically-developed prosthetic that looked and functioned exactly like a real leg. He spent much of the summer recouperating, then returned to Hogwarts. At first he only wore the prosthetic on special occasions, using crutches to get around the rest of the time, but gradually as he became more used to the prosthetic leg, he started wearing it more often. To this day, he only uses the crutches once in a while, preferring the prosthetic.

His friend and fellow prefect, a girl named Beonca, convinced him to go out for Quidditch again, and he won the position of Keeper, a position he held for the remainder of his Hogwarts career. He grew very close to his housemates and Head of House, even helping to develop and maintain a "Slytherin Family Tree" where he and his housemates "adopted" others as children, siblings, or parents. From being an only child, he gained three "sisters"--Beonca, a girl called Riley, and a wheelchair-bound girl called Renny. His Head of House continually offered him positions of responsibility, recognizing in the young boy a spark, and eventually Eltanin was appointed Head Boy, which surprised him even more than his Prefect nomination; however, he determined to do the best job he could. His Headmaster and Head of House never regretted the trust they had placed in him.

After his graduation, Eltanin began looking for something to do. He considered teaching, Healing, even working for the Ministry...but all of these ideas he rejected. He tried a number of odd jobs over the next two years--working as a waiter, working in a shop, even helping one summer at Baxby Cottage--but none of them felt right. One evening three years after graduating, he and four of his cousins--Kuma, Jacqueline Wemyss, Jackie's brother Logan, and Francesca DiMaggio--got together for a cup of tea and a catch-up. Kuma had some song stuck in her head, so Eltanin pulled out his guitar and started playing and singing along with her, and the younger three joined in. When they reached the end of the song and started harmonizing another folk song, Kuma suddenly interrupted with a shout of, "That's it!"

They started off as the Quill Quintet, playing small gatherings in public parks on weekends (Logan and Fran were still in school) and singing folk songs. Eventually they were hired for the summer at a restaurant called Captain Morgana's. They changed their name to Rovers' Revenge, dressed in stereotypical pirate clothes, and played to the afternoon crowd. They were a hit. After Fran and Logan's graduation, Rovers' Revenge pooled their resources and recorded their first album, a mixture of folk songs, drinking songs, and pirate shanties. With Eltanin on the guitar/dulcimer and lead vocals, Kuma on the fiddle, and Fran on the accordion, the Rovers' Revenge began touring seriously. They play both Muggle and wizarding venues, and thus Eltanin tries to distance himself a fair bit from the internal struggles going on in the Wizarding World. Still, he worries constantly about his friends and checks up on them as often as he can.

One of those friends, Megan Mills, had, like Eltanin, been a long-term patient in St. Mungo's; she had suffered from a mysterious wizarding ailment called The Grey that was slowly killing her. The same summer the Rovers' Revenge started working at Captain Morgana's, Meggie wrote to Eltanin and told him that the Healers thought they had discovered a cure. Eltanin supported Meggie through the long, difficult summer, and when Logan and Fran returned to school, he went to St. Mungo's to stay with her. After the procedure was completed that Christmas, Meggie's colour returned, her health was restored, and for the first time since she was four years old, she was able to return home...the only trouble being that she didn't have a home, her parents having died the year she turned seventeen. Eltanin offered to let her stay with him. The two had always been close friends, but now they grew even closer. The month after Rovers' Revenge recorded their first album, Eltanin proposed; the two were married a year later. Meggie travels along with the band as manager and stagehand.

Personality: Getting involved at Hogwarts really brought Eltanin out of his shell. He learned to smile, to laugh, to enjoy life, and to make friends--he even learned to play Quidditch, and made a fairly decent Keeper. He's quite cunning, often coming up with unusual plans to get something done. His cousin jokes that in a previous life he was obviously Rube Goldberg, because he enjoys coming up with complicated contraptions for the most ordinary things. Loyal to those he truly cares about, Eltanin will defend his friends and family against anyone whom he perceives as attacking them. He is a talented writer, but his artwork is terrible. A fan of music, he plays the guitar, the hammered dulcimer, and the harp, although the latter is something he tries to keep fairly quiet. His voice is a warm, rich tenor. He reads at a speed of perhaps 200 words per minute with a high reading comprehension rate, and he tends to make the most of it. He is compassionate and good with children. However, he has a stubborn streak and sometimes, especially when he's tired, says the first thing that comes to his mind without considering what he's saying. Eltanin collects guitar picks.

Appearance: Eltanin stands six feet tall, broad-shouldered but slender. He has wavy brown hair, which he wears short and somewhat swept to one side. His eyes, once honey brown, have darkened to a serious chocolate. A square face and high forehead house an intellectual mind. In terms of dress when just knocking about, he tends towards jeans and sweatshirts, with a pair of hiking boots because they give his feet good support. At one time, he would have worn all black, but now he wears your basic stonewashed jeans and sweatshirts in a variety of colours, often with writing on the front of them. He has a hat he's rather fond of, a black Stetson his aunt brought for him as a present after a trip to Montana. His left leg is a prosthetic below the knee, a rather cunningly made wizarding contraption that looks like a real one, although it still clicks when he walks. His Rovers' Revenge costume consists of a hunter-green shirt with dropped shoulders and a double ruffle on the front and sleeves, a pair of black pants with elastic at the knees and ankles so that the fabric puffs in between, a pair of black fold-over boots with a low heel, a red sash, a black leather cavalier hat with a red plume, and a broad black belt with a pirate rapier hanging from it. His fingertips are calloused from playing guitar and dulcimer.
