History:
Childhood
Samuel was born on January 4th, 1984, to Trenton and Savannah Quincy. As their first son, and indeed the first child in the next generation of a wealthy, well-respected pureblood family, Sam received all the usual spoiling and favors. He grew up under the wing of his father. Trenton lived his life in the style of Victorian gentlemen: he had no profession, only great amounts of leisure time and a massive fortune. He devoted much of his time to Sam’s education. This education was also very Victorian. Young Samuel learned the intricacies of politics and economics, and studied theoretical military strategy. He learned to speak French at a young age and studied basic Latin. He was also a very well-read child on a literary front, reading Shakespeare, Milton, Wilde, and Austen, as well as French authors like Flaubert, Balzac, and Zola. He read Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, Tolkien, Shelley and Yeats—everyone worthwhile (though no Americans, of course).

His mother was a classic trophy wife, the very picture of gentle, submissive womanhood, and Sam treated her as such. He looked to her for his material comforts, but for everything else in his life, Trenton was his beacon, his master. He and his father were inseparable, and everyone in their acquaintance knew that Sam was falling perfectly into the respectable mold that Trenton had made for him.

School
Sam was sorted into Slytherin upon his arrival to Hogwarts. It wasn’t a surprise, exactly. Everyone knew Sam to be very clever; it was just that Trenton had been in Ravenclaw, which was altogether a more respectable House for a family with a spotless record like the Quincys. Sam assured his family that they had no cause to fear any negative influences that the Slytherin students might have on him. He even went so far as to imply that Slytherin was a better House than Ravenclaw for a young man such as himself, who meant to apply his vast knowledge and cleverness to the changing of the world. Trenton, perceiving that his son had more ambition than he had, accepted this.

While in school, Sam perfected an art which he’d already been working on for many years: manipulation. Being from a wealthy, respected family gained Sam many immediate friends. His good looks attracted many more, and those with reservations were quickly won over by his charm and gentility. People all through the school considered him an intelligent, sensible, and altogether pleasing person. Sam became well acquainted with all of them, gaining knowledge, biding his time, and practicing the careful art of suggestion.

He became a prefect his fifth year, and after that he focused on cultivating relationships with the Hogwarts staff. It wasn’t difficult to get them to treat him as an adult, thanks to his refined manners and articulate speech. He could often be found discussing serious matters with the professors, things that under normal circumstances wouldn’t have been shared with a student. It was no surprise then that he was Head Boy his seventh year.

After Graduation
When Samuel graduated, he purchased a large house in Kent and then spent many years traveling around the world, buying up artwork and other artifacts to furnish it with. When he was twenty-two, he returned and held a large reunion party for the Hogwarts class of 2002 to introduce the house, which he named Trenton Hall, after his father.

He was offered several Ministry positions, but declined all of them and appeared to settle into the gentleman’s life that his father had adopted. But rather than serve his own amusement with his fortune and free time, Samuel became a philanthropist and patron to many of his peers, writing letters to important persons on their behalf and loaning them money to get things started. He was especially generous to his fellow Slytherins, making frequent trips to the school and paying close attention to the students who went through that House. He never interacted with them personally, nor would he allow himself to be introduced, but he would sit at the Head Table with the Head of House and speak with her about the students. Most notably (for good and bad reasons), it was Samuel who recommended Logan Fletcher for the Department of Mysteries. Samuel’s only regret in that instance (and it is personal, since no one but the Unspeakables know of Samuel’s involvement in Logan’s appointment) is that he didn’t become directly involved with Logan and Garrow’s dealings to monitor them both.

Samuel is currently biding his time, watching the world change. Unlike most criminal masterminds—unlike Edward Garrow—Samuel doesn’t want ultimate power. He doesn’t care what direction the world goes in, as long as he can maintain his existence and his influence. He considers himself a provider, and favors all ambition.

Personality: Samuel gives every appearance of gentleness. His voice is soft and low, very pleasing to listen to. It’s very calming, and people often remark on Samuel’s ability to soothe angry quarrelers. He’s usually called on by his friends and acquaintances to serve as a mediator for disagreements, and Samuel couldn’t be more pleased with this arrangement. Because of it, he knows all about the tensions in many circles, and his reputation gets a boost as word of his practical solutions gets around. He is a very practical man, and always seeks the simplest way to accomplish anything. Despite this, he also has a love for beautiful, aesthetically pleasing things; in accordance with this, his house is elegantly furnished and decorated, and his wardrobe is impeccable.

Samuel appears to have every reason to be proud. His intellect and knowledge are very great, he’s very attractive, and he’s generally well-liked. Despite all this, he maintains a genteel humility in his air, and this is part of what makes his countenance so pleasing. His soft voice is so gentle that even when he’s rebuking an idea or reproving a wrongdoing, the listener is never offended or uncomfortable.

Unless, of course, he means to make them uncomfortable.

In the same way that he is completely welcoming, Samuel can also be completely terrifying. The emergence of this side of him is extremely rare. Usually, it manifests only in a slight change of his voice: it remains as soft and low as ever, but it loses its warmth and becomes icy, sending chills down the spine of the listener. The next step is his eyes: usually clear, when he is very angry they become even more piercing, and he fixes them on the offender unblinkingly. If one is so unfortunate as to meet him in a true rage, he will appear to them as much larger than he actually is.

Luckily, Samuel does not get angry very often. He sees little point in being angry, instead choosing to react to disappointments by beginning to alter ruined plans or amend offenses done. If he does show anger, it is brief and the purpose is to impress upon the offender just how serious he considers their actions and to indicate that he is not likely to forget them soon.
