History:

Joshua was born into a pure magical family. His father, Daniel Austen, was an Auror and his mother, Rebecca, was a homemaker. Born in the time after Voldemort’s demise, Joshua was raised with the fear of Voldemort, but also the hope of “The Boy That Lived”, even as his father fought Voldemort’s minions. Just before Joshua was to leave for Hogwarts, his mother left his father because she had become pregnant with another man’s child. Even though he has a half sister, he has never met her. Joshua had become so angry with his mother for leaving his father that he chose to never speak with her again.

Hogwarts, for Joshua, was a fun time. As a young man that enjoyed life more than school, he was friends with many. Even, surprisingly, members of Slytherin House. But they were merely people to Joshua, not members of separate Houses. Though he had a lot of friends, his schoolwork was always suffering, except in Transfiguration. Joshua didn’t know what it was about the subject that always fascinated him, but he tended to work much harder to understand and practice it. In fact, it was the only subject that he received an “E” in both his OWLs and NEWTs.

Joshua would have preferred to become an Auror like his father, but he knew that his grades were not strong enough to be considered. Instead, Joshua would have to find something else to do as a job. The problem was that he didn’t want to do anything. Joshua would have preferred to sit at home and do nothing, but his father would not allow it. Joshua’s father also knew that his son could not be an Auror, but felt that working at the Ministry would be a good thing for him.

Daniel Austen dragged his son to the Ministry and walked him around the various offices looking for employees. He did that because Daniel knew that his son would never do it on his own. Eventually, Daniel was able to get Joshua hired with the Magical Education Department. It was ironic, of course, since Joshua’s education was less than spectacular, but the Department was looking for someone to basically be a lackey.

Over the years, Joshua got better and better at his job and as various staff members retired, died or moved on in other capacities, Joshua slowly moved up to the post of Assistant Director of Magical Education. Despite his own educational blunders, Joshua has helped the Department rebuild the formation of standard magical education to a new tradition.

Personality:

Joshua is almost always in a good mood. Sometimes, it’s too good and people get annoyed with his cheery attitude. Joshua’s life, however, has had many ups and downs, but he chooses to focus on the good times and not so much the bad. Joshua, though playful and fun is serious when it comes to his work. While he is in the office, he will have fun, but not at the expense of getting work done. This is because he has had to work hard to prove to his father that he can be good at a job. Despite the years in his job and his status, he still feels the need to prove himself, not only to his father, but to himself as well.

Appearance:

Joshua has brown hair and brown eyes. He has a skinny frame, though he tends to eat quite a bit. Joshua dresses up quite a bit, with a minimum slacks and dress shirt and often wearing ties. He wears a long, brown jacket when out and about, though takes it off in the office. Joshua wears glasses when reading, or when he just wants to look smarter than he is.
