WILLIAM CHANNING
Personality:
- Friendly
- Romantic
- Practical
- Confident
- Cheerful
- Unruffled
Will is a pretty smooth, mellow kind of guy. He takes things in stride, preferring to enjoy life as much as possible rather than sweating over small stuff. He is rarely flustered by anything—unless it's extremely drastic, of course, in which case he would set about finding practical ways to respond. An important part of Will's character is his down-to-earth quality. He is an extremely stable person, and very sure of himself. He's not arrogant; he just knows what his abilities are.
He's very friendly and has great conversation skills. He won't hesitate to strike up a dialogue with anyone, unless of course the situation is inappropriate. He's highly aware of propriety and does his best to make sure everyone feels comfortable at all times (unless Alain Walmsley is there; it's impossible to make that man comfortable). His superiors have always liked sending him into tense or emotional situations, because Will's warmth usually has a calming effect on those around him. He's easy to talk to and accessible, which is part of what makes him a great detective. He's also extremely loyal; once you gain his trust, you have it for life.
Being methodical doesn't take away from his personality, though. Will is extremely fun-loving and adores laughing and being clever. He likes to do spontaneous things every now and then, to “keep him young” and from becoming too set in his routines. Normally all he has to do for an adventure is owl Wendell, and that's part of why he loves the man so much—platonically, of course.
There is one realm in which Will tends to lose his head a bit: love. Will has the unfortunate combination of being a hopeless romantic and gay, which means he has to be careful lest he fall hopelessly in love with a straight man. He's the sort who'd make mix tapes and blurt out compliments like vomit. It's led to some heartache before, so Will tries to be wary. Normally, however, he fails. Luckily, almost all of his co-workers and friends are female: Wendell and Apollo Sinistra (who stubbornly claims to be straight) are some of his only male friends.
History:
FamilyFather: Jack, 59 [wizard]
Mother: Trisha, 57 [Muggle]
Siblings: Jenny, 34 [witch]; Michael, 31 [Muggle]; Liz, 27 [Muggle].
ChildhoodWill was born on a sunny May day in Kent to Jack and Trisha Channing. He was a happy child who needed little attention and rarely cried; a godsend to his poor mother, who had already spent almost ten years with Will's three obnoxious older siblings, Jenny, Michael and Liz. Jenny was selfish, Michael was trouble and Liz was spoiled, but Will—Will was perfect, and quickly became Trisha's favorite. His calm, easy-going manner, even as a child, helped to add a degree of stability to the household. In the event of a sibling disagreement, Will usually ended up deescalating the situation and solving the problem before the parents had time to get frustrated.
Will's sister Jenny turned out magical; since he was only two when she started at Hogwarts, and because Trisha was very open about the whole wizarding thing, he grew up with a happy mix of Muggle and magic. Neither Michael nor Liz had magic, which was a bit of a sore subject for about a year after each of their respective eleventh birthdays. By the time Will got his Hogwarts letter, thankfully, his siblings were teenagers and wholly invested in their social lives.
SchoolingWill was not sorted into his sister's old House (Gryffindor); he ended up in Hufflepuff, which Jenny thought was hilarious. Will loved his House, whatever she might have said. He made friends with everyone in his House the very first day, and it only took a week before the friendly boy knew several people in each of the other three Houses as well. He made enemies as well, as all first years do. Many of the Slytherins he cheerfully approached hated him from that very instant!
Will was hardly a brain in school, but being a practical boy he set aside time for studying and always got his work done. He achieved good grades through all his classes, and even helped his friends when he could.
It was in his second year that something very important happened in young Will's life: he discovered that he was, in fact, gay. How did he discover this? Why, he met Wendell Darrow. Hufflepuffs shared a Charms class with Slytherins, and Will was immediately attracted to that charming face. He set out to learn everything he could about the boy, which proved to be extremely easy—everyone seemed to know him. Turned out he wasn't the most honest of boys, but Will didn't particularly care. He was enterprising, and Will liked that. The Hufflepuff made it his express goal to become friends with Wendell and made a fool of himself flirting—he was twelve, after all, and not very good at flirting in the first place yet, much less with another boy! Luckily, Wendell took it in stride—he made it clear that he was very straight, but didn't push Will away. The two boys became very close friends; Will quickly got over his crush (he remained gay), though Wendell's romantic happiness always remained a source of interest for him; Will has since that year been Wendell's faithful wingman, going where no man has gone before in the realm of women for the sake of his friend.
In his fifth year Will became a prefect and he eventually graduated with respectable marks.
Growing UpThough Wendell offered, Will opted against going into “business” with his friend. Instead, he attended Auror training. Will had always had a mind for problem solving, and he felt that he could best put his skills to use helping people by going into law enforcement. He went through all the rigorous Auror training, but when he finally got to the department the Head wanted an assistant. He chose Will because he figured correctly that Will wouldn't mind dealing with all the people the Head didn't want to...the BHL, and the Daily Prophet. He's worked in the department for four years and couldn't be happier—he's in a perfect position, not only because he loves his job, but because he can also keep Wendell out of trouble. (Oh yes...and he can also try to get Wendell in with the BHL...which he would have been able to do by now if Wendell didn't keep talking to them himself.)
