Patrick Neil Everard
History:
ChildhoodPatrick was born to Neil and Ceelin Everard in December of 1997. The Everards were an Irish pureblood family well known for a rather nefarious family business: blackmarketeering. Of Neil's generation of Everards, he was the one who took up his father Finian's mantle in the search for valuable “merchandise.” His older brother, Vincent, was poised for a more political career after marrying Fiona MacFealltoir and taking her on a ten-year trip around the world. His older sister Myrna married into the respectable and conservative Bradigan family and withdrew from her brothers. Neil, the youngest of them, sought to expand the family fortune by searching high and low for magical artifacts, occasionally running into Vince in remote countries.
Eventually, however, Neil was called to return to Ireland by the death of his mother, Eileen, in 1995. Finian was in his fifties, too old to jaunt around the globe and lonely with his two oldest children moved out of the family estate with families of their own—Myrna with her husband Owen, and Vince with Fiona and his beautiful daughter, Caroline. At twenty-six, Neil agreed to move back into the Everard mansion for good. Later that year, he met and married Ceelin Sheridan, a pretty girl he'd graduated from Dissendium Academy with in 1986. Patrick, their first son, was born two years later.
Like all Everard children, Patrick showed intelligence from an early age. He soon learned valuable skills like manual lock-picking, and at the age of six was even able to tell the difference between a genuine artifact and a transfigured bit of rubbish. He was a mischievous child, but a happy and well-liked one. Even his pranks were regarded with laughter and appreciation—he was a “true Everard.”
Times of Change (11-12)Patrick began school at Dissendium Academy in the fall of 2009, thanks to not turning eleven until the winter of 2008. Because of that, he was older by almost a full year than most of his year mates, but he was never bothered by it. In fact, he reveled in being more “grown-up” than them, and quickly became a leader in Misneach (Gryffindor) House. He was perfectly ready to be a rabble-rouser like his father and Uncle Vince had been, especially since the school had taken Uncle Vince from him the year before.
His cousin Caroline was a seventh year in the same House, which Patrick was excited for, since he loved Caroline—but she distanced herself from him without telling him why. At first, he'd thought it was because of Uncle Vince, but some things told him that wasn't the only reason: the way she talked to people, who she talked to. After a few weeks of barely speaking, he cornered her and forced her to explain herself.
“I'm only telling you because I know you're smart enough to understand, and I don't like it one bit,” she'd said with a sigh, glaring at him. “Changes are coming, Patrick. Nothing will stay the same. The value of life is going down.” She'd put both small hands on his shoulders, squeezing tightly and staring at him with an intensity only Caroline could muster. “By Maeve, Patrick, stay out of it if you can. But if you can't...listen, Patrick. Listen to everything. Watch everything. Remember everything.
Eolas foirmeacha cumhacht.”
Knowledge is power. It was the Everard family motto.
Patrick listened. He watched. He remembered. And he began to see what Caroline meant by the value of life going down. He had always been taught to be proud of his family name, and he was; but he had never been taught to be proud based only on his blood. No one he'd ever spoken to had had that mindset. And yet, he watched it slowly begin to creep into the minds of even his most tolerant pureblooded friends. They began to make comments about “dirty blood” and the mixed Misneach House began to split. Some of Patrick's close friends became very outspoken activists for the rights of Muggle-borns; many of them got into frequent fights and were shunned by much of the school.
For his part, Patrick did his best to keep his head down for Caroline's sake. He just listened, and watched, and remembered. He kept tabs on who was serious and who was just blathering. His summers were spent listening to Neil and Ceelin argue about the same issues as his Dissendium peers. Ceelin's family, the Sheridans, were supporters of the pureblood immersion, while Neil refused to have anything to do with whatever Cormac MacFealltoir believed—he blamed the “bleedin' war monger” for the death of his brother. In the summer of 2010, Ceelin and Neil were divorced and she returned to her family's estate. She tried to take twelve-year-old Patrick with her, but he refused to go and stayed with Neil instead.
Neil, Patrick and Caroline (who had come to live with them after Vince's death) wanted to avoid getting caught up in the political upheaval, but when Caroline was forced by the Council into an engagement with Cornelius Borrail, the family decided that it had had enough. Neil and Caroline became heavily involved in the underground Revolutionary group with the likes of the Ballantine/Graham family (including Harry Ballantine, the man Caroline
really wanted to marry) and Lucy Simington, a friend of Caroline's from school. Patrick, meanwhile, began his second year at Dissendium in a state of distraction. He wanted to be a part of the Revolution, but both Neil and Caroline told him he was too young and he'd do better to focus on his studies.
Patrick, however, found that there was plenty for him to do for the Revolutionaries from his place at the school. The curriculum was being carefully monitored by the Council by that time, excluding all mention of the Muggle world and focusing on the deeds of pureblood witches and wizards. Muggle Studies as a course was discontinued. Student discrimination was high. Patrick developed a code with Caroline and kept up a correspondence in this code to let her know where things stood at Dissendium Academy. He also struck up an underground black market of Muggle objects to combat the focus on magical things and magical things only, selling and giving out things like Muggle books, still Muggle photographs, and electronic devices (which he versed himself in so as to explain how it worked to his peers).
Patrick didn't finish his second year of school, because in the spring of 2011 the Revolutionaries were discovered by the Council and forced to go into hiding to avoid interrogation and torture. Lucy Simington took care of making sure he knew everything he would have needed to pass his P.E.S.T. exams, since she wouldn't hear of him or any of the other children in hiding missing out on their educations. Patrick had chuckled to himself whenever she started ranting about it.
Eolas foirmeacha cumhacht!
That summer, he and Caroline taught all the Revolutionaries their code and it became the “official” code of the Revolution. They constantly made variations to it to throw off Fearghus code-breakers, and Patrick was happy for something to occupy his time with, especially since it helped the Revolution.
On August 30th 2011, Neil was arrested by the Council while he was looking for supporters in Dublin. Unwilling to be taken alive, he dueled the Fearghus until he was finally killed by Owen Bradigan, his own brother-in-law. Patrick became the responsibility of twenty-year-old Caroline, as part of his father's will. He received from Neil a Foe-Glass, a Hand of Glory and a Time-Turner, all three of which young Patrick was keen to use avenging his father's death. Caroline, however, would hear none of it and set about looking for a solution for their situation.
It wasn't until after the raid on the Ballantine home that Caroline determined that she needed to send Patrick out of Ireland. On the same night, Ceelin and Cornelius showed up to claim both of the cousins on the grounds of marriage and parenthood. With Harry's help, Caroline fought them off and sent Patrick to live with the branches of the Graham family still in Scotland, since they had been shown that the innocence of youth meant little to the Fearghus.
Helpless (13-17) Patrick started at Hogwarts in November of 2011, almost halfway through his third year. He had a hard time catching up, which was mostly due to the fact that he was angry at being sent away from his country, his family, his friends, and what he considered to be his duty. If his father had thought the Revolution was worth dying for, Patrick thought so too, and he wanted to go back and do his part. He said so in every letter he wrote to Caroline, but she never allowed him to return to Ireland. Patrick kept up a subscription to
The Scully, even though it told him nothing but the same old propaganda. He relied wholly on Caroline's letters, though he began to resent them in some ways. They became less and less frequent as time wore on, and he was especially hurt to learn that she had married Harry but not let him come home for the wedding, however small a ceremony it had been.
Meanwhile in Scotland, Patrick settled in with the Grahams as well as he could. His connections to their Irish cousins helped ease the transition, but he was a much quieter, moodier boy than he had been when he was younger. The Revolution was all he could think about. In school, he spoke to very few people in his House (Gryffindor). Normally, he probably would have been just fine and at least put on a good show for everyone (the Everards were all about good shows) if it hadn't been for one person: Teddy Lupin. An orphan of England's Second War, which Patrick only knew a little about, the trickster in Teddy reminded Patrick too much of himself. He resented Teddy for taking the only identity Patrick could have mantled comfortably at Hogwarts; news of outright fighting in Ireland and the death of Cursin' Kenny did nothing for Patrick's mood.
Just before Patrick's fifth year at Hogwarts started, the Council Blood Bath of 2013 rocked the Irish population. There were heavy casualties on both sides and as the death toll was counted, Patrick heard name after name, each one striking his heart. His apprehension built with every name, too, as Caroline's was missing from both lists. Finally, a week before school, he received a letter from her saying that she was safe in America with Harry. With that and the news that the Fearghus leaders were being removed, Patrick threw himself into his fifth year with gusto. Caroline still didn't want him back in Ireland, but she didn't have the ability to bring him to America; for the time being, Patrick was stuck in Scotland, and he was going to make the best of it.
He joined the Quidditch team as a Beater, and it was in Quidditch that he finally reconciled himself with Teddy Lupin. He and Teddy became good friends on and off their brooms; they were a prank-pulling duo to rival the Weasley twins and almost as good a Beater team. Always a sharp student, his O.W.L. scores were more than satisfactory for anyone's expectations. He would never forget the darkness of the Revolution, but he was still young, after all, and began to be more interested in his life at the present.
After GraduationPatrick considered going back to Ireland when his time at Hogwarts was finished, but ultimately decided against it. His father, grandfather and uncle were all dead; his mother and aunts Myrna and Fiona were estranged from him completely. The most he did was go back to the ruins of the Everard estate, which had been raided by the Fearghus in 2012. He was able to salvage a few more family
stolen treasure heirlooms, including but not limited to a full set of goblin armor, a set of Vanishing Cabinets, and an enchanted crossbow. He added these to his Gringotts vault upon his return to London.
He also thought about going to America to join Harry and Caroline, but decided against it; he felt that their family life, with two-year-old Vincent Ballantine, would not sit well with him. Instead, he followed the footsteps of both Neil and Uncle Vince: he traveled the world. He studied the
artifacts magical cultures of other countries and became especially well-versed in Egyptian and Greek
objects heritage.
Both Neil and Vince spent almost a decade in their travels, but Patrick has returned to England after a mere two years thanks to a letter from Teddy about Harry Potter's disappearance. Patrick knows the warning signs of revolution, and Potter going missing seems like an over-hasty jump into purification to him. He intends to make up for his lack of involvement in the Irish Blood Revolution with whatever happens in England...but in his eagerness to prove himself, will he be accused of war-mongering?
Personality: Naturally, Patrick is what his family liked to call a “true Everard.” He is clever in a practical sense, and is a good judge of the pros and cons of any situation. He knows when to go ahead and when to pull out, which is a distinct Everard trait and the reason so few of them have actually been prosecuted for their
crimes business ventures. He knows when the prize is worth the risk, and that doesn't apply just to acquiring magical artifacts. He uses that knowledge in his day to day life as well, and especially in relationships. For Patrick, though, that means that he is usually single, seeing better uses of his time than investing it in getting to know another person. He tends to stick with the friends he has; any new acquaintance is likely a business partner.
In some contradiction to this practicality, Patrick also has a wild and mischievous side which is again characteristic of his family. He can easily out-drink three Englishmen and still be able to stand without falling, and he has a love of pulling pranks on people who won't appreciate them. He's never had a problem with having more enemies than friends, because that way there are “fewer people to hurt him.” He's an independent person, a trait which is less the result of his family and more the result of losing so many of his close friends and family at the young age of thirteen. He got used to being on his own, and it's a condition he rarely thinks about as either good or bad.
Despite his past, Patrick is an optimistic young man who loves to experience the new, rather than dwell on things he can't change. The one distinctive mark that the Revolution left on him is his inability to cope with inaction. If he is faced with a situation that he can't do anything about, he becomes extremely frustrated and loses some of his situational awareness. As far as he's concerned, his father died the last time he couldn't do anything, and he refuses to let something like that happen again no matter how many times Caroline tells him that Neil chose to die when he did.
