Cal Ferox
Cal is the resident barmy and brilliant Squib, and works in a clandestine laboratory at Cambridge University brewing potions and studying theoretical transfiguration. He's beyond eccentric and well into creepy (not to mention unwashed); if you catch him on a good day, he'll only bend your ear about Schrödinger's Equation or speak in enigmatic philosophical fragments. On a bad day, he can be downright cruel {
Skeleton at the Feast}, particularly if he feels jealous or threatened; he's also addicted to various drugs (doxy powder, cocaine, alcohol). Bizarrely, though he's usually a recluse, he'll occasionally venture out to places like gay Muggle strip clubs {
Sinning is no Sinecure}. At other times he's all business, and will go to great lengths (even resorting to charm and baths!) to obtain potions ingredients {
Silver and Gold}. Why? Well, he's associated with Edward Garrow {
Irresistible Force, Meet Immovable Object} et al., in a research capacity, though he has his own ambitions. He's been working on the Fourth Unforgivable, and may know more than he's letting on about the so-called 'apparition bug.' He's recently found another associate to add to his growing list of connections, for which he has various nefarious plans; but Jasper Christie has also become something of an object of... interest to him, once he got over wanting to smash his face in {
Our Hours}. Things really heat up at Jasper's birthday party, when he (most surprisingly, cleans himself up and dresses nicely), then arrives at the party, corners the guest of honor, and goes off on a long, drunken, slightly lovesick and very
strange rant {
Happy Birthday, Mr. Christie}. Shortly thereafter, he's interrupted in his home lab and upbraided, luckily for only a minor technical transgression, by Ivy Ballantine {
Loyal to No One}. He's invited to yet
another ridiculous Pureblood party by his detested cousin, and goes for the free drinks--to find the host, Amadeus Faulkner, has done the same {
Sorry Soirée}. Then he heads off to see Jasper again and make amends for his 'appalling' behavior {
Smoke and Mirrors}. Over the next few weeks, despite a rocky start, they become good friends, and Cal even lets him buy him fashionable clothing {
Building an Important Friendship}. He runs into--is that a
werewolf?--at Cambridge University {
Epiphany}.
Then his lab explodes, and Anne Davies, another Ministry Witch, uses it as a pretext to ask him for a potion {
Mixing Business with Pleasure}. While he's miserably cleaning up his flat and attempting damage control, Jasper comes to pay him a surprise visit... which ends in a carpet ride and a kiss {
Ashes to Ashes}. The relationship (what relationship?) makes its way further into... PG-13... territory when Jasper invites a terrified Cal to dinner three days later (highlight: "I don't usually offer my guests a cold shower before dinner, but in this scenario..." ) {
A Little Sincerity is a Dangerous Thing}. After a frustrating end to their dinner date, Cal finally returns, with a gift and an offer... {
Anything But Temptation}. Patrick Everard stops by to let Jasper know someone from the Russian mob wants him dead, and Cal decides he wants
Everard dead (not really) {
Liar's Paradox}. They kidnap a werewolf {
Project Dorian}. Then Jasper gets Cal to take him car-shopping at Dursley's Dealership (yeah, you read that right) {
Shaken, Not Stirred}. He meets the mysterious Shallah Kosa, who hires him to work on a complex potion {
Selfish Man}. He visits Atlas again, in high spirits, but finds the other man deeply shaken... {
A Different Person Every Day}.
Upcoming: Cal attempts to take over the world! Furtive snogging in alleyways! Blackmail! The depths of despair and then out of them again! And his thirtieth birthday. December 13, if you wanted to know.
