Constance Fallon
History:
Childhood
Constance was born in Scotland on a muggy summer’s night in 1994. Her parents were John and Sarah Fallon, both of them wizarding, though John himself was Muggle-born. The couple was young but very much in love, still under the delusion that their feelings for each other would help them survive anything. Well. Constance helped them learn their lesson. Sarah died giving birth to her.

John was devastated. He abandoned the life he and Sarah had begun planning and left the infant Constance with his mother while he “regained himself.” What he did for the first five years of Constance’s life remains a mystery to everyone but him…and the woman he brought back. When John returned for his daughter he had a new wife, an American woman named Jessie. The first thing Jessie said when introduced to Constance was this: “What kind of a name is Constance, anyway?”

The three settled into a relationship that was indifferent all around. John and Jessie were soon disinterested in each other, but saw no reason to get divorced. Constance at first had clung to John, happy to finally meet the man Grandma Fallon had talked to her incessantly about for years. John, however, had become used to independence, and had “realized” that Sarah had been the one who wanted a family, not him. There were some nights when he behaved like a father, though. He sometimes pulled Constance up onto his lap; he told her stories, and sung to her, and called her “his dear wee Connie.” But those nights, much as Constance cherished them, were few and far between. As she grew older, a trend took place: she would go to sleep loving her father on those nights and wake up despising him for teasing her with love that way.

Unsurprisingly, Constance received her Hogwarts letter the day of her eleventh birthday. An affirmative reply was sent back immediately by her father, which was perhaps the best thing he ever did for his daughter. He may not have been the most compassionate of men, but he seemed to perceive that this—Constance’s school career—was his last chance to do right by the girl. John sent young Constance off to Hogwarts with everything she needed, including two special gifts: an owl, which she named Dorney, and a bracelet that had belonged to her mother.

Schooling
Constance was sorted into Gryffindor House upon arrival to Hogwarts. Her first few weeks were slow and lonely. Having little reason to speak at home she had gotten used to being silent most of the time, something the other girls in her year didn’t seem to understand. Though their teasing was harmless, and Constance made no retaliation, she remembered every single remark. Because of her aloof silence, she gained a reputation for being proud.

Academically, Constance excelled. Her solitude made her studious. As far as natural magical talent went, she was average; however, she had a persevering spirit and sharp determination that allowed her to learn spells and technique quickly and thoroughly. She was a favorite of most teachers purely because she didn’t make a fuss and paid attention in class. Many of them expressed a wish that she would speak up more, but Constance accepted and ignored these comments with politeness. At this point in her life, she was content to be a spectator to all but her own affairs.

It was the summer after her fourth year that marked a turning point in Constance’s life. Something was different when she came home.

There was a baby in the house. A boy, named Kevin.

John had prepared a slew of excuses for not telling her and provisions so that she never had to deal with the baby boy, but it meant nothing to Constance. She loved her brother, and quickly became his primary caretaker for the summer. It was the first time she’d known unconditional love, and she needed Kevin as much as he needed her.

Her fifth year was far more pleasant than her previous years at Hogwarts had been; though she hated to leave Kevin behind for such a long time, the thought of her brother was enough to keep her cheerful. She finished out her schooling in relative happiness and popularity…though she thought it strange that there was no one from her family at her graduation ceremony.

Tragedy takes its toll.
Her family hadn’t made it to commencement because they were dead.

Constance arrived home to find an empty house up for sale. Confused and frightened, she went to her Grandma Fallon, who explained everything. It had happened in March, she said; the house had been broken into and all three of them—John, Jessie and Kevin—killed. The reported lack of injury told Constance that it had been done by wizards, but why was a question she had no answer for. As for why she hadn’t been told sooner…all Grandma Fallon had to say was that the owls had flown off and she didn’t know the address for Hogwarts.

Constance collected what was left of her things from the old woman and headed to London. Her father’s Gringotts vault had one hundred Galleons and a handful of Sickles and Knuts; she emptied it and secured herself an apartment in Rowling Terrace. Her next stop was the Ministry, more specifically the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. She was determined to become an Auror or hit witch and find whoever had murdered her family; she had to know why, at the very least. Her interviewer, however, recognized the change in Constance that no one else had been able to see. The cheerful, talented girl had been replaced by a young woman barely able to conceal her thirst for revenge against an evil that had taken away the only person who had really loved her…her brother, Kevin.

The Auror told her there weren’t any open spots in the academy and offered her a secretarial position. Constance was furious, sure the Auror was lying, and would have refused if she hadn’t caught herself in time. She accepted the position and used her access to all the records in the department to look for former offenders with a similar M.O. and kept watch for similar cases. This led to many a frustrating false tip, since there’s really only one good way to murder a person in the wizarding world, but Constance persisted.

For three years, Constance thrived in her environment. As time passed, she marshaled her desire for revenge and was able to put it in perspective. While finding her family’s killer was still her main priority, she knew that getting hot-headed every time something reminded her of it would ruin her focus and cause her to slip up in her search. This knowledge made her devote herself to extra thoroughness in her work and consequently her life; she began to think in big-picture terms and became quick to spot missing links.

She re-filed her application for the Auror position every year, waiting for a “spot” to open up. When she was twenty-one, she was finally accepted. She went into her training with great zeal, tempered by the focus she’d been cultivating for the past three years. She completed her three years at the academy with extremely high scores and has now been quickly added to the Auror roster, thanks to the events of the summer.
Personality:
  • Sarcastic
  • Social
  • Thorough
  • Self-conscious
  • Industrious
  • Observant

Public
The last six years of Constance’s life have given her a derisive world view. She now retains little of her former sense of humor; she’s extremely given to sarcastic and almost insubordinate remarks, which no longer result from jest and are instead born from “disillusionment” with reality. She has an extremely low tolerance for incompetence in herself and others, and has little respect for authority where it’s not deserved. She comes off as proud, rude and distant, seeming to have little empathy for those around her. The truth is that she has little practice at befriending someone who doesn’t already like her: essentially, she doesn’t know how to take the first friendly step. Despite this, Constance thrives on being around people.

Private
Constance rarely displays her true feelings, more given to hiding her emotion with dry humor and disagreeability. When she does show herself, it is less a display of feeling and more an explosion following a long period of simmering under the radar. She has a fear of being alone—not referring to the wish of a spouse or partner, but of being by herself for extended periods. This fear results from the discomfort of being left with her thoughts without distraction, because her thoughts tend to dwell on the loss of her brother—which in turn sends her into a funk that normally lasts at best a few hours and at worst, a few days.
