History: Amos Logan Fletcher was born to Julianna and Mitchell Fletcher of Spinner's End. His parents were both magical, but their family had pure blood without the wealth of other such families. Mitchell was a security guard in the Ministry, and Julianna was a secretary in a minor department. They were decent people, and content to live in their life of labor for little reward.

Their son was of a different mettle. Born without their ignorance and instead with a cutting intelligence, he was from a young age dissatisfied with the lot of his parents. He knew that he deserved better than what they were able to give him. He was kept in the house through his childhood, without access to the information he craved. Those years embittered him against his parents, whom he considered to be mindless automatons, too stupid to better their own lives or his.

He discovered happiness when he was finally sent to school. He was sorted into Slytherin House, but made few friends because of inferiority (to them, he was materially unequal; to him, intellectually). It was of little consequence to him; he threw himself completely into his studies. He frightened other students with his fervor and received high marks for his solitary existence. He quickly advanced beyond his classes and spent his free time reading increasingly complicated texts and practicing difficult magic.

After graduation Logan was offered a position in the Department of Mysteries on an unknown recommendation. He was extremely enthusiastic about it, feeling that it was his chance to finally be among people on his level. He excelled almost inhumanly, and he reveled in the feeling of importance the position gave him. He was trusted to know things that others weren't allowed to know, and it was only right. After several years there, he became caught in a limbo of which he was unaware, as his superiors debated whether or not to promote him to an Unspeakable. One side claimed his aptitude for it was unmatched by any past or current Unspeakables; the other, that his aptitude was the very reason it was dangerous to give him the position. In the end, however, the former won out, and Logan became an Unspeakable.

The position was perfect for him. It allowed him to test the bounds of magic unrestricted by even the other branches of government. He kept a flat outside the Ministry, but spent the majority of his time in his office, only occasionally stepping out for books, instruments, and rarely, food. He also makes routine trips to Azkaban, utilizing private rooms there for several hours at a time. When asked about it, he merely said once “It'd be easier if dementors were still there.” No one bothered to ask what he meant.

The Fourth Unforgivable
In the course of his research, he met Artemis Sinistra, the beautiful co-owner of Sinistra's Secondhand Shop. This meeting proved to be a turning point for Logan; she affected him in an altogether unexpected way, and it proved to be disasterous for his work on Edward Garrow's fourth unforgivable curse. He began to abhor the project and found small ways to sabatoge it.

In the end, however, it wasn't enough. When Garrow's madness led him to murder young Judy Baines, Logan realized the immense danger of his position. He determined to go to the Minister with all his records, including incriminating letters from Garrow, and confess everything. The very night he intended to do this, however, a group of vigilantes--including Artemis and her brother--invaded the Department of Mysteries. To make matters worse, Garrow showed up and used the curse on one of them. At a loss for what to do, Logan fell to his knees and was arrested shortly thereafter.

He was only in prison for a day or two; he couldn't be sure of the exact time, but he knew it was short. He was dragged out of his cell to the trial of Ivy Ballantine, which had strangely enough turned into the trial of Edward Garrow. He presented his damning evidence against the politician and was released in exchange for that testimony. He was fired from Level Nine, but that was of little consequence; he'd intended to quit anyway.

In the weeks since then Logan has spent much of his time in his flat, leaving only for groceries and the like. He has yet to come up with a solution to the many problems presented by the end of his dealings with Garrow--what would he do for a job, for example. Or, more importantly...would he ever get another chance with Artemis?
Personality:
  • Intelligent
  • Ambitious
  • Unmerciful
  • Reserved
  • Unfeeling
  • Confident
Logan never accepted what love his parents had time to offer him, and he has similarly kept all other attempts at closeness at bay. He has no desire to “bond” with anyone unless they could be of use to him. He developed a “puppeteer” complex through his school years that has persisted in his adult life. He regards himself as a higher being than the rest of the population, and thusly feels justified in manipulating them and using them to gain his own ends. He likewise feels little remorse for this behavior, since his ability to take what he needs gives him the right to it...and of course, he is generally oblivious to the fact that he's manipulating someone at all. All he does is recognize the levers he needs to pull to get what he wants and, well, pulls them.

His intellect is appalling, and in some cases frightening. He seems at times to be able to read minds (though Legilmency is something he has not been able to master) and makes educated guesses to rival Holmsian conclusions. This pseudo-omnipotence gives him unblushing confidence in his total accuracy. If he were ever wrong, he would deny it to his grave; being wrong would make him just as worthless as the rest of humanity, which is the most abominable fate imaginable for him. His superiority complex has given him the habit of talking to himself, quietly; for intelligence is furthered by conversation with equal or greater intellects, and he has yet to find one even equal to his.

The inferiority of the people around him is a great source of frustration to him; that, coupled with the trial-and-error nature of his occupation, has helped him develop a vicious temper that is rather like a volcano. It boils beneath his skin (the frequent snaps at people who dare speak to him doing little to relieve the pressure) until it becomes too much, and explodes in a rage that once unleashed is difficult to stop.

Since the catastrophe that was the Fourth Unforgivable, Logan's outlook on life has changed. When he met Artemis Sinistra, she showed him that there was more to life than science, charts, numbers and the like. He began to consider moral right and wrong instead of scientific right and wrong. It was unsettling to him. Knowledge was everything, after all, and now he was learning that there were aspects of life for which there were no definite answers. Friendship, fun, love--these things he had avoided for the very reason that there were no boundaries, no controls, no sense to any of them. He didn't know how to go about normal living, but he felt it was worth the uncertainty to see her smile at him.

The Logan Fletcher of today is more nervous and hesitant than he was before. He never bothered with niceties before, but is now almost excessively polite...when he rememebers. He tries to do good things but is unsure of what people consider good and bad. When he runs errands, he usually takes several hours, since he slows down (and sometimes sits) and observes the exhanges of the "normal" people around him. He is a fish out of water trying to grow legs.
