Any thoughts on Inbreeding? It decreases heterozygosity and this thing known as inbreeding depression decreases fitness (one's ability to reproduce). We talked about it in Evolution class yesterday. The quote is from an English Teacher.
Well inbreeding increases the genotypic frequency of homozygotes, including deleterious recessive allele homozygotes. This causes a decrease in mean fitness, which is known as inbreeding depression. If this is coupled with drift's trend towards homozygosity, the inbreeding depression is heightened. Drift has particular strength in small populations, which is quite common since infinite populations only exist in theory. The only "cure" for inbreeding depression is migration, which tends to increase heterozygosity.
Incest is a best, put your sister to the test! <:)
J/K.
Incest just creeps me out. Practically all signs point to "it's a dumb idea, don't do it". There are a few hypothetical questions along those lines, but nothing terribly definate. Something along the lines of this:
John and Samantha are siblings. One night, while they're alone, they decide mutually to have sex. Samantha is already on birth control, and John uses a condom. They both have a good time, but keep this a secret, and never do it again. Samatha does not conceive due to their planning, and the two continue a normal life style.
No one knows, there's no child, and they both had a satisfying relationship and continue on with life without problem.
Personally, it's still creeps the shit out of me, but what is there to do, really?
