Title: Portfolio Help

Ragnarok - July 13, 2008 06:42 AM (GMT)
I need to put together a portfolio of at least 10 media related works for a coarse I want to take (it's a computer graphics/animation coarse), I just don't know what to put in it. I plan to put in a few drawings, some computer graphics, some of my animations, some school video work (if I can get ahold of it)... and there's where I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Well, it looks like you pretty much have all the bases covered, I think. Just specifying exactly what should be the concern now.

Are you counting sprites as animations?

I guess the concern is I don't know exactly what the coarse is looking for in the portflio, and I want to put stuff in that will stand out.

As for sprite animations... I'll probably add one or two of them regardless if I can get ahold of any of my video work (I've done filming, film editting, and animated intros, but there are pretty slim chances of getting ahold of them right now).

If it's for a school course, I'd suggest talking to previous students of the course, your adviser, and even the teacher/professor for ideas and tips. General portfolios are a bit more freeform, but in this case there might be specific things that are preferred.

From a general perspective, be as broad as possible, showcasing as many different types of work and styles/themes as you can.

That's as good advice as you'll get on this subject! Though, isn't there some sort of guideline given for this? If not, as said earlier, make your portfolio so that it displays all of your talents and skills.

Well I got my requirements the other day. I have to:

1. Make a Resume
Pretty standard I guess, I won't need help on this.

2. Statement of Purpose
Why I want to go into the coarse.

3. Self Portrait
Can anyone clear this up for me?
"Create a full figured self portrait drawing, in an environment indicative of some aspect of your character, lifestyle or interests (hobbies such as sports, music, reading, etc). Pay attention to using the entire frame of reference and visually balancing your portrait with other elements. Your drawing must be done from direct observation, without using photographs as reference."

4. Tourism Poster
I have to make a torism poster for my city. Doesn't seem that complicated.

5. Comic Strip
Well this shouldn't be that hard. They want me to make a 3-4 paneled one like from a newspaper.

6. Still Life
By the sound of it, they want me to sketch a variety of fruits and veggies with as much detail as possible. I was pretty good at this in school, so it shouldn't be that hard.

7. Photgraphic Essay
Seven photos that must relate to either architecture, technology, transportation, or people. Then I have to explain how my photos relates to my topic without explaining each photo. I think I go with people and just get my friends together.

8. 3D Model
Yah... not my strong point. They want me to either design or build a 3D chair that will fit in a 6 inch cube. Then I have to take 3 photos showing three representative, different views. They want to see my ability to think, work in 3D, and represent spaatial relationships, and the model must show my craftsmanship and creativity (so I'll probably make it a recliner). I've already decided that I'll make one in real life from old computer parts.

and personal work.
They'd like my to select 4-5 things. They 're looking for detail, elements of good composition, and "only the best." I'm considering my tiger face, a school video I did, my stop motion cartoon, and some animation. Feel free to suggest stuff.

And that's that. I have until April to get this done.

3) I think they mean to draw yourself somewhere doing something you'd do on a daily basis. You're apparently not allowed to use photo references, so I think something easy like setting up a mirror in your room and drawing yourself drawing (yourself) would work.

Gather around children and lend me your ears... if you have to listen to one of my rants this year, make it this one...

Here's a recap on the past few months regarding my portfolio and other college related stuff.

Ok, well after much hardship and luck most foul, I was indeed able to get my portfolio in on time... the last day in fact (more on that later). The main reason this became challenging was because all the spriting, animation, and all the other crap I've made over the past year or two was UNUSABLE! I misread part of my requirement paper and they wanted ALL non digital work, strange for a college coarse that has DIGITAL right in the name. So I had to make all new personal work... damn. Here's two examples plus the Still Life I submitted as seen in my gallery:

Other than that, members of my family had some medical complications so I didn't have time nor did I feel like working on the full scale requirements. It was a rough few months, but everyone is fine. :)

By then, with only my Comic Strip and some personal work done, I only had about a month to finish the rest of the portfolio. I swear to you now, I don't know how to explain it, but SOMETHING didn't want me to make the deadline... or at least it wanted to make me work for it. Power outages, downed phone lines, job, chores, computer crashes and errors, and some stuff I'm not getting into happened day, after day, after day. For example, had to completely redo my tourism poster on the computer TWICE... only to find out that the program I was using (Corel) was bugged and wouldn't allow me to save, print, cut, copy, or paste anything. So after finishing it AGAIN, I did what I had too... I screen captured that giant thing piece by piece and put it back together in Paint.

From there everything got somewhat easier, it helped that I requested less hours at my job to work on it more. The 3D model took about about a week to finish since my first model broke apart and my glue gun honestly exploded... I can't explain it any better. I couldn't make a recliner like I had hoped, but you make due with what you got. I worked on the self portrait all day and it turned out horrible, barely looked like me at all XD ... but I only had a few days to send it in so redoing it wasn't going to happen.

At this point it felt like a Disney movie, last day to hand it in, nothing but bad luck since, etc.

I got to my college and was waiting outside the room to hand it in with all the other people handing it in on the last day. We were wishing each other good luck and talking about the coarse and such. I got a little worried when I was hearing that some of the people were trying to get in for a second or third time, and remembering what I heard at the open house; About 200 people apply. About 100 get the portfolio in, and only 50 get in.

From there I just had to go home and wait for my interview. Some letters arrived saying I should know some things such as what I'd like to get out of the coarse and that I should be ready to defend my work, etc. I got as much information as I could and then my day came around. I went back to my college and waited for the interview to begin.

It went absolutely no way I would of thought it would have. I think when I showed my teachers the contents of my portfolio, it was the first they'd ever seen it. They asked maybe 5 questions and they weren't even the ones I was ready for, they were pretty basic. I thought I messed up; I ranted a bit and got off topic once or twice, but in the end I thought I left a good impression. I'd find out if I made it in 2-3 weeks.

Funny story, after my interview I went back to waiting room and wished one final good luck to the rest of the applicants there... Only to be followed to the elevator's. One of the applicant's thought I was a teacher :P

A week later, my parents wake me up and give me a large envelope. 3 things came to mind:

1. That the first thing they've been quick about.

2. That's the biggest rejection letter I've ever seen :P

3. What time is it?

So yah, I made it! <:) I start end of August. Thanks to everyone who gave their advice, support, possibly blood, and time to read this... :rose:
