Title: 24hr Spriting Marathon
Description: No bull, spriting for a whole day!
Renegade - January 21, 2009 08:07 AM (GMT)
>>EDIT<<Made support banner clickable. Directs clicker to this postHey, it's Renegade.
I'm still a newb to this place, and most people don't know me. IMO, I'm quite good for a spriter that's only been spriting for a month or two. I figured that if I want my work to be taken more seriously, and to get known over FES, I hav to do something notifiable. Something different or origial. Something that makes people say "Hey, there's that kid that did XXXXX" or "I know him! He's great!".
I was thinking of ways to do so, and came up with this: I am going on a 24hr spriting marathon.
That's right. I will take a sleep throughout the day, and wake up at 12:00 on January the 23rd to start spriting. I will continue through the day and finish at 12:00 the next morning, with wrists aching.
I will videotape my whole day - but cut it down to a few minutes, to give proof that I did sprite my little hands off.
This is no game. I will see this through to the end. However, my parents might not like the idea, so I might need to scrap this.
I usually wake up in the morning with millions of ideas, and sprite them all by 2:00 PM. My sprites mightn't be so original or good, but they're sprites nonetheless.
My parents, if they allow me to follow through with this, will support me along with my sister and cousin (the 7yr old that's been requesting all the sprites). Other than that, I'll need some more supporters. If you want to support me, place this banner in your signature.

I will be posting my works in a separate thread, and posting the video in the same thread - if the mods/admins allow me to. I will post said material a few days after. I might need to take a long nap afterwards!
So, I hope I see it through, and support 'Renegade's 24HR Spriting Marathon!'

Erm, perhaps this belongs in General Spriting?
...that's quite an endeavor. I'd get bored, to tell the truth, and I like to sprite for hours at a time, generally. Don't do anything stupid. >> I'd hate to have someone ruin their eyes just because they wanted attention from people.
Our spriting gallery activity is generally kind of low, and it can't really be helped considering the current overall lack in activity on the site. Please just bear it for awhile. It isn't that we don't acknowledge you; it's just that we're all not here at the same time. A lot of people here don't sprite or haven't sprited in a long while, so you can't expect everyone to suddenly pop up and congratulate or critique you.
By all means, you're free to do whatever you wish with spriting, but I think it's a tad foolish to stay up a whole day just to sprite things. Take it slow. It's a recreational deal and shouldn't be rushed. I'd rather see nice sprites borne of careful work and gradual fixes than a bunch of sprites pumped out in a rush. Quality over quantity. It doesn't make you any better of a spriter or a person to rush things and never go back to fix them.

Sounds dangerous. But I think you can pull it off. ;D
Jeigan - January 21, 2009 07:53 PM (GMT)
uh, good luck.
I just hope you don't get sick of spriting afterwards

Don't like, refuse to take breaks or anything. Your eyes and body will get tired from sitting in the same position for such a long time, so respond to what your body is telling you. My personal suggestion: Work on different things. Don't work on the same sprite for a long time, especially if its giving you a hard time, because then you'll get tired/frustrated over it. When you get stuck on a sprite, move to another, then come back to it.
Meh, I think it'd be really fun, but don't overwork yourself just because you want to stay up for 24 full hours. Take breaks, eat & whatever. But have fun doing it.
Try half-bodies, mapping, full-customing etc, and not just splicing/recoloring. Work on your shading skills, or other things you'd like to improve like your personal mug, jk. Make mugs of characters related to each other, like parents/siblings etc. That's probably my favorite thing to sprite, because I can try and make them look like that character, but obviously different. That's about all the ideas I've got. XD

Well, thanks for the support!
@Yoshi, I'm not gonna just sit in my bed all day. After a while, I'll grab some snacks and return to my computer (Don't forget meals!). I have a laptop, so I can move around the house. I'll have to rest, of course
I'm gonna try some new stuff. I've tried full-customing at sprites, but failed. I'm going to look up some tutorials. I've been making an FE hack, so mapping's been added to my agenda. Again, I'm not that good at it IMO, so I'll need some tutorials.
@Jeigan, Ever since I started spriting, I've been doing it most everyday (not all day). I once made a 2-hour attempt at a half-body and it came out good - after much trial-and-error. But it got lost in the midsts of my hard drive. D: I don't think I'll get tired.
@Merc, Well, If you look at this topic, you will see that I've stayed up for 24hrs before. I watched movies, ate cereal (too lazy to get anything else) and played FE7 on my GBA all night. I'll also go to sleep at about 7:00 ans set my alarm. A good amount of sleep mixed with balanced sessions will result in w1n.
Thank you for putting the banner in your siggeh! Can you put the image code in there too so people can copy it directly from your sig.
@AK, Well, sorry about posting this in the wrong board. I really can't tell the difference between General Discussion and General Spriting.
I know FES isn't high in activity. It's not that people aren't replying to my gallery, either. Most people just know me as "That new kid", as far as I'm concerned.

Your reputation isn't going to bounce from newcomer to veteran in a day. It's your choice, and I certainly can't stop someone on the other side of the world from doing what they want. However, the essential point is that everyone starts off as a newbie at some point.
That probably isn't how everyone else sees it, but I would much prefer to get to know someone anonymous and watch their progress rather than have them continually pump out sprites and try to gain attention. I'm not terribly concerned about status and reputation as long as it isn't bad. Being 'the new guy' isn't a bad reputation; it's wholly neutral and allows for surprises as they settle in.
In all honesty, I would have to say I think of you less as the 'new guy' and more of the 'new guy who really wants attention and doesn't want to update his sprites'. I don't dislike you, but I think you're trying a tad too hard and moving a little too quickly. Spriting isn't something to rush unless you have a deadline. Considering that you're probably only doing this for recreational purposes, I don't see why you have to press yourself so much. It's all good and well that you want to improve, but you aren't going to improve if you don't slow down and really take all the critique we've given you into more consideration. You keep saying you'll fix this or change that when you have time, but all I ever see are new sprites. You apparently have plenty of time, and I feel like I'm giving critique to a wall.
Renegade - January 22, 2009 03:53 AM (GMT)
AK, you will be happy to know I've closed my sprite gallery down for a while to re-shade all of my sprites. I will re-open it tomorrow if I get the shading done today.
It's not that I want my rep to be skyrocketing overnight. I just want... Well... hmm... I'm outta words. Let's just agree to disagree. You're not particularly fond of my idea, but I think it's good. Bottom line.
aznswordmaster1 - January 22, 2009 07:08 AM (GMT)
Well I'm surprised that your parents gave the ok for it, my parents would think I'm crazy if I where to do something like that. But yeah I know how you feel about the lack activity and the lack of people posting saying stuff about your work, I think that it goes like this, person A logs on, sees that Person B has something new in his/her gallery, looks at it for a bit, says something to him or her self, that tends to be how it goes for me cause I really don't have anything to say to a person's sprite a good portion of the time, I try to say something but then again I don't want to post empty words to a person.
But yeah good luck this this man, that takes a lot of guts to be able to do something like that. ;)

Kind of a lame idea if you ask me :\
Don't make art for attention, do it for satisfaction
Renegade - January 24, 2009 12:13 AM (GMT)
Bad news: My parents couldn't find a carer for the day, so I had to go to work with my mum. The marathon will be postponed 'til a later date. :(

I kind of agree with this, I guess some people, me included, forget that it should be done for fun, just keep that in mind if you still want to do this.

Well, school starts in two days, so this will have to be postponed until the weekends or - if worse comes to worst, the term 1 holidays. 0_o
Zanryu - January 25, 2009 02:23 AM (GMT)
You've inspired me to do the same next weekend. =O Only problem is I have a hard time waking up at a certain time. I also don't have any good recording software...
I'll give it a shot, however. Dunno how I'll do, I'm usually really tired due to my lack of sleep the past couple years, but I can probably manage it. If you've got the balls to try, so do I. Best of luck.
Lubu - January 25, 2009 04:49 PM (GMT)
you have my support Renegade, just remember to try to have some fun with it while your at it
Renegade - January 27, 2009 12:53 AM (GMT)
Well, school's tomorrow. My parents said I couldn't do it then. Guess I'll have to wait... :(
Renegade - April 5, 2009 03:42 AM (GMT)
Alright! I've returned to the forums!
Now, holidays start soon in Australia, so I should be able to get this done. Holidays go for about two/three weeks, so I should have long enought to prepare.
And whta did my parents just tell me? We're going camping at the holida's start. >.< Only for two days, though. It looks like Lubu is the only one supporting me fully!
Thaks for the encouragement, and support like hell!
