The sword doesn't necessarily go below the ground. It could just be a matter of the angle he is holding it at.
In this picture(excuse the horrible cosplay) his(her?) sword should be going below the ground if we were to look at it your way.

Well I just copy-paste this stance from Eliwoods spritesheet animation, and added armor and the Sword of Seals. So I haven't thought about it.

it doesn't really look like it's below the ground more like he's walking and the sword is in front of him
