Title: Obama's speech for schoolchildren
hpty603 - September 5, 2009 10:17 PM (GMT)
What do you guys (and Darkray) think it will be about? Do you think it's a good idea that he's making us (well, I'm not too sure how many of you are still in highschool) discuss his speech and what our values are, or whatever it is that he's making us write an essay on?
I just know that I'm either staying home or having my parents write me a note saying that I'm not to participate
darkray - September 5, 2009 10:58 PM (GMT)
I can tell you one thing...I AIN'T WATCHING IT yea well I was reading it in the paper,

| and it said Ohio students will not have to view the speech if the school decides not to, and if the school says yes students have the right to sit out. (which will be the majority of my class because theres like only five kids in my class who liked him.) |

my school being a class A school decided not to show it due to we go to school tuesday (first day) and we alllways have a lot of shit to take care of the first several weeks. So yeah have fun getting brainwashed.

I'll watch it. I'm wondering if his speeches can appeal to children.
Denning Rosewater - September 6, 2009 11:36 PM (GMT)
I'm no longer in grade school altogether, but honestly...this sounds like nothing compared to large-scale papers I've written in the past. The fact that it's even optional makes this nothing to worry about.
Right, and some of these statements made me laugh a small bit:

I guarantee that you'll have harder papers in high school to write that will be more challenging than this. Pussying out of it for no real reason is just silly, not to mention a little cowardly.

Why?

Right. Since you're in around the 5th-6th grade level based on the age you've given us, I doubt that whatever paper you'll be writing will even amount to much more than a few sentences or maybe two small paragraphs; which, at that level, teachers will call a few sentences at best.
Assuming that you're one of the more "educated" and "intelligent" of your peers, please tell me how it makes any sense to avoid writing a few sentences about something you sat and watched for an hour. It's comparable to...sitting on an internet forum and making posts like this, honestly. People do it all day, yet sitting and listening to a person on a television screen somehow becomes several times more harmful to the young child's mind.

Why would you make the assumption that this is a clensing of the mind when you haven't even seen/heard/read a single lick of the address yet? The entire school choosing not to watch it seems rather silly; what are you going to be doing the first several weeks? Finding classes? Getting lockers? Having your teachers literally pass out your books a few days later? That can be done in a matter of minutes, in all seriousness. Why your school can't fit in an hour or so long speech in such a small schedule is beyond me. Grade school has NOTHING but free time.
Really, if I were in first grade and had to write something like this, I probably wouldn't have cared then, either. This is no threat, and it doesn't even sound remotely dangerous or challenging. It's like taking a damned survey, really. Not necessary, but still, fairly easy.
carlantis25 - September 6, 2009 11:40 PM (GMT)
well all i know is that my school is'nt giving in to the speech and besides what you've already said we also do examinations and for the first week without scheduales. all is really unorganized so we arn't watching it
darkray - September 6, 2009 11:49 PM (GMT)
good point den, I guess it wouldn't hurt but speeches that I don't appeal to make me drosy and i'll feel sick, also it said in te paper we won't be writing an essay so yups B)

I'm not pussying out. It's not that it'll be hard, I just refuse to listen to Obama's whims because I still have freedom, a little bit at least. And I'm a senior in highschool so it's not like I haven't written papers taking AP English last year and Gifted English the previous two years
darkray - September 16, 2009 07:58 PM (GMT)
yea I watched it, it was fine actullay but wasn't great(of course)

Democrats...Don't make me puke my guts out. They are calling schools that didn't make the students watch it racist.

Modern Democrats make me miss Karl Marx. Well, pretty much everyone makes me miss Karl Marx. And Vladimir Lenin. I love those guys.

They call you racist for pretty much anything nowadays. Especially using a logical argument as to why you don't like Obama
And at least Marx and Lenin went full throttle communism so I at least respect them for that, not like socialism that just makes everybody equally poor

This thought bugs me.
You don't allow for the chance that you could be using faulty logic, that they don't see your logic, or that you're completely generalizing all democrats.
All of which would be your fault.

I was trying to point out that no matter what you say, they'll just call you a racist and you don't like him because he's (half) black
Cugar - September 17, 2009 02:43 AM (GMT)
As a big time liberal, it offends me that you generalize like that. I'm always the first one to make racist comments.
<_< >_>
Denning Rosewater - September 17, 2009 12:42 PM (GMT)
Personally, this is why I really don't get too deep into politics; it always turns into people whining and bullshitting over things that are completely senseless. On all sides.
As for the racist thing, if you're not really racist, I don't see why them even calling you/a group racist is even an issue worth mentioning. Whatever, though.

That's pretty racist. Doesn't belong in this topic.
