Title: Looking For
Description: Minolta 70-210mm F4 Lens [ Beercan ]
Isaac - June 6, 2008 12:20 PM (GMT)
I've did some research on the Net and it's said that the production of the Minolta 'Beercan' lens has ceased production in the late 1980's and the only way I can obtain one is through eBay or friends and family!
I'm wondering if anyone has this particular lens type to sell me?
I'm also not very sure about the whole compatibility of lenses with specific DSLR camera types.. Do certain lenses only work with certain cameras?
For example: Does the Minolta Beercan lens only work for a Sony camera? Or does it work for any camera model?
This should be what I'm looking for:

Some info to help a newbie out would be greatly appreciated! :)

Hi Issac,
Beercan is for Minolta/Sony's Alpha mounting, I am not sure if there is an adaptor of Nikon Mount to Alpha mount and if there is, I am also not sure if the AF will work on your D40x..
This is a very good piece of gem and it's been discontinued already so you can only find it in second hand market at the price from $320 to $380 depending on condition and whether it comes with a hood or not..
it's a very good lens, despite it's age, its still very very sharp that whenever I hold my copy of beercan, i always get cuts.. nah just joking =p hope i did clarify your doubt! :)

Oh!
So you mean there are adapters that will allow me to use lenses that were meant for other cameras?
Do you happen to know of any lenses that are a close match to the Minolta Beercan lens that are compatible with the Nikon system?

I've already tried asking Julian, but he takes forever to reply to his messages :P
Hopefully he'll be around more often so we can all share his knowledge~!

I've found a Nikkor 70~210mm 4.0 AF Lens for sale on eBay, I don't know the exact price I will be paying since its price is subject to change due to shipping and handling costs..
Let me know if you think this is worth the money!

This lens
http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-AF-70-210mm-f-4-...1QQcmdZViewItemis not the constant aperture of F4..
the other lens is the right one that has the same spec as the beercan.. 70-210mm F4, however I am not sure is it as good as the beercan or not.. :(

It looks fairly good and has pretty much the same specifications as the beercan lens.. I might consider getting it~
Hopefully it won't be lousy! :ph43r:

That would be the smarter thing to do I suppose :P
Think I'll go look around for the lens during the Pasar Malam first, since it's not too long more before it opens~
I doubt I'll be able to find it there, but I have my fingers crossed! :)

Hi Isaac,
You'd be pleasantly surprised with what you just might be able to find at the coming pasar malam ! Hope you'd be able to find what you are looking for. See you there.
Cheers,

Hi Issac..
Just got some updates on the lenses to be sold in the Flea Market.. some of the Nikon lenses are 50mm F1.4 available and also an 85 F1.4 and 100mm AF-S VR Macro.. i will not say they are gem but lenses like 50mm F1.4 and 85 F1.4 are big aperture lenses which will come in handy during low light situation and if you want to create nice background/foreground blur.. =)
Best Regards,
JL

Just to clarify: The (#)mm is the maximum zoom distance of a lens right?
Because I need a lens with a relatively long zoom and still be able to maintain an aperture setting of 4.0 or less for background blur ..

the beercan is at 3x zoom.. (210/70) at it stays at F4 through out.. below is my owe copy with customised hood! ;)

Unfortunately.. I can't use the beercan, right? :(
So I guess I'll have to settle for something less good, or something that's around the same, but more expensive! <_<

 [idea!!]
can go for Tamron 18-250.. it's a super popular travel lens!! it's sister lens Sony 18-250 is having global shortage due to it's range and sharpness..
at tele end, you can create the bokeh (background blur) when the distant btw you and the subject; the subject and the background are right.. :)
