Hi all. im ruzaini currently 17 and probably the youngest. im a self-taught photographer =) anyway can anyone tell me how to take needle-like pictures with a person stationary and not blur?
Isaac - October 9, 2008 08:59 AM (GMT)
Wow, finally someone who's younger than me!
But anyway.. a warm welcome to our little kampong community, Ruzaini.
I'm quite curious as to how you found this forum if you were self-taught? :)
Just to clarify, what do you mean by "needle-like"? Do you mean sharp?
Jupiter - October 9, 2008 10:10 AM (GMT)
Halo Ruzaini,

Ruzaini,
Any example to show?
ruzaini32 - October 9, 2008 11:39 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the warm welcome.i'm from Singapore.haha. well, it's because i'm a Sony user and i went for JulianW course. Fundamental Course. But yeah. It wasn't enough though. However, i enjoyed the course. So this is the example of what i'm asking. Do tell me how i should make the person clear.
Isaac - October 9, 2008 12:11 PM (GMT)
Ruzaini, it's because you have locked your focus on the background(the passing cars).. In order to get everything in focus, I think you would need a tripod for it.
Simply use a very small aperture(a big F number such as F22 or F24) and lock your focus on the person. Aperture priority, as you should know from the fundamental course, is the main mode you should be using to shoot in almost any situation.. so use this to set your aperture and then fire away!
Just some FYI if you didn't already know all this..
Since you are going to use a very small aperture, your shutter speed will automatically be set to a very long time such as 3 seconds or more due to low lighting conditions, coupled with very little light entering the camera because of the aperture size. This would mean a tripod is definitely necessary in order to get a clear, sharp shot.
Also, it seems that you have cropped off your friend's(if that is actually your friend) feet, which is a big no-no! As Master Julian should have explained to you in the fundamental course, he would have said that you should never cut people at their joints! Such as ankles, elbows, shoulders, neck etc..
Oh, and your horizon seems to be slanted a little bit downward to the right.. always make sure your horizon is perfectly(or as close to perfect) straight! :)
And adding on with just some personal thoughts..
Maybe you might want to wait till the sky gets darker so you will have more focus on your night scene instead of the blue sky drawing the attention away from the main scene, which is your friend and the passing cars. ;)
Other than all that stuff I just mentioned, I think you made a pretty good effort with that!
Mind letting us know what model and lens you are currently using?
Hope this helped! ^_^
ruzaini32 - October 9, 2008 12:26 PM (GMT)
Isaac, well ya i did use the tripod so ya. That critique really helps. I just hope i'm able to improve on it. As for the slanted picture, i'm not sure on what's the problem to the head of the tripod (whatever it calls) because once i locked it, it will be slanted to the right or left. so i haven't troubleshoot it.
I'm using Sony A-350 and DT18-70mm lens =)
Thanks for the guide. =)

Are you in secondary or poly/jc now?
ruzaini32 - October 9, 2008 12:53 PM (GMT)

Hi Ruzaini,
You may like to post your photo under Photo Critique... ;)
jeffreysiow - October 15, 2008 08:22 AM (GMT)
Hi Ruzaini,
1st, a warm welcome to this community..
Quite a good try for that pix.... just take note of your composition as there's too much 'white' space on the left side. And as our sister Jupiter mentioned, you can post your pix in the Photo Critique for the 'Masters' :P to comment on your postings...
Cheers!
Jeffrey
