Mount Kerinci is an active volcano 3805m high located in Indonesia. Me and my trekking teammates climbed Kerinci in Feb 2008. To me Kerinci is a sacred mountain and i like to thank Kerinci for allowing us to safely climb to its summit.
This Tiger statue found in the village at the foot of Kerinci indicates the mountain is home to Sumatran tigers(beautiful animals). Kerinci lies directly behind this statue, hidden in the thick fog.

In the morning, farmers with their bulls and carts goes to the foot of the mountain. Past eruptions from the volcano gives the surrounding land fertility and farmers plant crops close to the volcano for the soil's rich fertility.

This place is called Mount Tujuh. It is a crater lake formed out of a dead volcano. Tujuh means 7, it is called mount Tujuh because it is surrounded by 7 mountains. It is about 2700m in height and a warm-up for us before we start the Kerinci climb.

This is a same view of Mount Tujuh but in the early morning. The night was cold about 10 degrees, we slept in tents. After spending 1 night at the top, we climb down to the village.

See the large body of water? Thats Mount Tujuh in the distance. We have climbed a day and spent a night on Kerinci. On Kerinci, night time is a killer, the temperature drops to 0 degrees and the winds are very strong(at least on Tujuh there are 7 mountains blocking the winds). After dinner, everyone hide into the tent and sleep. We woke up at 4am in the morning to carry on the climb. This view is in the morning at around 3200meters.

The view of Sumatra! From here, we can see the sea 60km away at the end of the horizon. The orange guys are my teammates!

These crevices in the ground are very important! There are no more trees at this height so the winds are very strong. Exposure to the wind is very painful, it saps our stamina and any exposed area of skin becomes very painful. I had no gloves and had to keep moving my fingers so i won't lose them to frostbite. Every 10 minutes of climbing in the open, we jump into one of these holes to hide from the wind and warm ourselves for 5 minutes. The last 400m was climbed in this manner and took us 2 long hours.

This drainage is a lava drainage, lava flowed through here when Kerinci erupted. At this height, no trees, no animals. Only rocks, shrubs, houseflys and us!

This is very near the summit, The white smoke is not cloud nor mist, they are sulfuric fumes coming out from the volcano. The fumes are poisonous so we have to wear mask. We also can't touch our face with our hands or we can get poisoned.

In the end we made it to the summit! This isn't the summit but the view is almost similar. At the summit we took groups photos and stay around for 10 minutes only because it is too cold and the air is poisonous. The wind at the summit is so strong that we can't stand up at all unless we hug each and stand. I tried looking down the crater but just see a lot of white smoke. We were very happy to have made it! After this is a nice dinner back in the village and sight-seeing :)
