Title: Big Decision

Jeff - February 13, 2009 04:02 PM (GMT)
Hi, sorry haven't posted message here for long time.
That's because I haven't SLR body anymore.

Actually I not satisfied with my old EOS 450D and already sold it.
This is the perfect time to buy a new body and decide in which line I will live with.

Need help, which one do you recommend for me :
Canon EOS 50D vs Nikon D90 vs Sony Alpha A700 ?

Isaac - February 13, 2009 06:41 PM (GMT)
Nikon D3. :P

But seriously, I think the A700 would be a better choice as compared to D90. I'm not too sure about the Canon EOS 50D though.. :)

I figure that since the D90 has a movie mode incorporated into it, it probably had to sacrifice some of its other more SLR-inclined functions to make room for that new feature.

Honestly, I think the D90 is more of an entry to intermediate level camera as compared to the A700 which is probably around the intermediate to advanced level.

Cheers,
Isaac

Jeff - February 14, 2009 12:09 AM (GMT)
A bit lonely spending weekend without SLR

Nikon D3 is out of budget maa.
So you said that you will prefer A700 rather than D90, what a surprised hearing that from D80 user ;)

Movie mode maybe useful, if you go for traveling, I think.

I still need information about picture quality comparison among them, in strong daylight and at night.

what the reason for the switch?
the colour?the detail?or the handling?

Jeff - February 14, 2009 04:24 PM (GMT)
Haha many reasons why I want to switch system :
- view finder is to small (penta mirror), can't see edge of the border clearly
- body is too light, so body grip is not good enough
- exposure metering is not good, easily over exposure (must use exposure -1 until -1/3 in daylight)
- engine is too noisy for continuous shooting (comparing with 50D)
- auto focus is unpredictable, one point focus is much safer
- auto white balance is not good, especially in incandescent lights (light bulbs)
- pessimistic about Canon performance, new product is not good as competitor

1. Canon 50D is too noise
Sony A700 and Nikon D90 is better

2. Canon 5D Mark II has black sport issue
Sony A900 and Nikon D700 is better

I think this is the gloomy area of Canon and the glory area of Sony & Nikon !!

So it's normal that I sold my old 450D right ;)

Jupiter - February 15, 2009 03:42 AM (GMT)
Happy shopping...

Hmmm, i do have a friend who owned different brand of cameras for various reason cited as abv.....if yr fund allow and u also a 'camera playboy'
it actually quite fun owning different cameras.

:D

kthgcg - February 15, 2009 03:45 PM (GMT)
Among the three, i would choose A700 first, D90 second and 50D third :)

Jeff - February 15, 2009 04:05 PM (GMT)
I want to achieve my own satisfaction. I realize every time you change system, you should sell all previous lenses and flash.
So this should be the last one, never try to change again in the future. Satisfaction cost so expensive laar...

If I changed system, I would use it for entire life. <WoW>

Actually, I have compared the lenses price among Canon, Nikon, Sony.
Average price of Canon lenses are a bit cheaper comparing with Nikkor & Sony lenses. Is it true ?

A700 mainly for Carl Zeiss lens, camera has built-in image stabilizer. (like that is killer already)
D90 for good price, good kit lens and good ergonomics.
50D i don't like the button layout, expensive, noisy at high ISO

As for whether canon lens are cheaper, i never compare them against each other :) (but heard that nikon is increasing price)

For your info, Canon is afraid they will lose the market to their competitor, so they cut down the price of EOS 40D body. It's cheaper than Nikon D90 and Sony A700, and still come with 1 year Canon Sg warranty !!

The problem is EOS 40D was released in August 2007 (2 Years Ago !!). The successor, EOS 50D is not good, like what you said : button layout is not good, expensive, and noisy at high ISO

It's a surprised because previously Canon was King of noise control

So I am still considering whether buy EOS 40D (old technology) or change to other system  :(

kthgcg - February 19, 2009 04:31 PM (GMT)
Hey the EOS 40D sounds like a good deal, personally my views on digital system is i use and stay with what i can live with. I upgrade if a very good deal comes along, or the system i am using is unable to fulfill my next task.

So in this case between 40D and 50D, i will choose 40D.

The money i save from getting a newer body, i can use on lens (lens are more critical to achieving my task) :) (also why i choose A700 with Carl Zeiss lens as my first choice)

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM - $1850 After GST
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM - $1350 include GST
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - $950 In-GST

Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED - $2250
Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED DX - $2100
Nikkor AF-S 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED DX - $1500

Can your help me to find out Sony price of above lenses for comparison ? Thanks a lot !

You see the HUGE different price tag between Canon and Nikkor. Why do Nikon put a very high price for their lens ? This is Madness ! :(

I think I will buy Nikon body but with cheapo lens (Sigma or Tamron lens). Can't afford Nikkor lens. Is it wise ?

kthgcg - February 21, 2009 05:34 PM (GMT)
Carl Zeiss 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM - $2599 (suggested retail price) (include GST)
Carl Zeiss 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM - $2799 (suggested retail price) (include GST)
DT 11-18mm F4.5-5.6 - $960 (suggested retail price) (include GST)

In your comparison of the canon and nikon lens, the technology explains the difference in price.
The 3 nikon lens you listed are F2.8 ED glass, furthermore the nikkor 24-70mm F2.8 is using the latest nano crystal coating. Nikon's ultra wide 12-24mm is a constant aperture lens compared to canon's variable aperture.
Among the 3 canon lens, only the 24-70mm F2.8L is a L lens. Should use L lens (using Ultra-low Dispersion UD glass) to compare against ED glass.
EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II - (MS) $2086

To buy a nikon body and not use nikkor lens, you are missing out the sweetest part :)

Jeff - February 21, 2009 07:27 PM (GMT)
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM - $1850
Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED - $2250
Carl Zeiss 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM - $2599

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II - $2100
Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED DX - $2100
Carl Zeiss ???

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM - $2,500
Nikkor AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED - $2500
Carl Zeiss ???

All price are after GST.

Well, those are the only comparable thing (same with Ultra Low Dispersion glass), I think.
This is same with if you had plan to buy a car, you would also think how much petrol needed. And looks like Canon is the cheapest one for original lens but I want to change :(

Btw, this Saturday I went to Best exhibition, and saw Sony A700.
That's cool cam ! I like the design !

kthgcg - February 22, 2009 05:03 PM (GMT)
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II - $2100
Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED DX - $2100
Carl Zeiss 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM - $2799 (suggested retail price) (include GST)

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM - $2,500
Nikkor AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED - $2500
70-200mm F2.8G SSM - $2999 (suggested retail price) (include GST)

Sony's G lens are also professional series lens, comparable to canon's L lens. Where the Carl Zeiss lens excel in sharpness, Sony's G lens excel in contrast.

Just as you compared to buying a car vs petrol consumption, buying a camera is more than just the camera alone, its the entire system :)

Jeff you have the data on each system now, you have also consulted other's view. You are ready to make the decision. Whether the decision is good or bad, the efforts put in after the decision makes the real difference :) No matter which system you decide on, don't look back anymore, go forward and give it your best :)

Hi Bros,

I have juz made some amendment to the postings :P (juz got back to S'pore late last nit lah)

Please DO NOT quote the shop names as the price given to you may be a SPECIAL to you and not for the rest...

It is an VERY sensitive issue, hope you understand ya! :D

Yes Boss Jup !

That's why I do not write full name of the shop, just nick name.
Oh you already deleted the shop name completely ;)

You are right, don't look at back.

Why March exhibition feels so long? Every weekend without photo taking is very painful and hurtful for me :(
I have thought to buy before the exhibition.
Who need the lousy freebies such as tiny bag and weak tripod right ?

Sony's lense is more ex one rite??

Jeff - February 24, 2009 03:38 PM (GMT)
I am not sure about Sony or Carl Zeiss Lens price.

But if u ask me then I can send u private msg to show that most of Canon lens is cheaper then Nikkor lens.

More expensive lens (between different system) doesn't guarantee better quality laar ;)

Yes Jupiter, we understand. If we need to quote the price, will quote fixed prices by major distributors :)

Jeff - March 1, 2009 03:59 AM (GMT)
Actually that's the price from major distributor. So the price shouldn't be so different from nowdays market (in range of +- $50)

From the previous post, we already know which one is best for value right ? Especially if you want to buy more lenses with extra low dispersion glass in the future.
Value will be the key thing when you want to break your bank account, unless you are a pro one !

I hope I am not wrong

kthgcg - March 1, 2009 05:34 PM (GMT)
Major distributors - the camera maker's Singapore branch(Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony et cetera). Large chain outlets(Best Denki, Courts, Harvey Norman et cetera). They generally have fixed pricing made known to the general public through advertisements and their offers hold true for a period of time.

Monetary terms can be a sensitive issue to people around us, it is good if we try not to go into monetary terms :)

Jeff regarding your question, let me share a quote with you. This quote is part of me. No money in this world can buy these words yet it is free :)
"Successful people make their decisions quickly and change their minds slowly. Failures make their decisions slowly and change their minds quickly. My decisions come quickly"
