I am not so familiar with the Tokina brand.
If want 3rd party lens, why not Sigma ? ;)
Isaac - March 24, 2009 04:48 AM (GMT)
From what I've read from DPreview and Kenrockwell.com and some other sites, the Tokina seems to be the best substitute for Nikon's 12-24mm F4 in the wideangle category for APS-C format cameras.
The Sigma and Tamron - from what I've read - seem to be the most expensive, most poorly built and slowest lenses as compared to the Nikon and Tokina brands! There was even this one lens the Tokina 11-18mm F2.8 which is even BETTER than the Nikon! (At a much heftier price of course).. :)

For other people who read this message, please read as Tokina 12-24mm F4 for NIKON mount !
This is not for Sony Alpha mount
So will this be your first new lens in 2009 ? ;)
Isaac - March 24, 2009 04:01 PM (GMT)
Yes!
I must have a super wideangle for 2009! It's simply a to-die-for lens for a landscape photographer. :D
Apparently, I found that super wideangles are great for portraiture as well as it emphasizes the subject if you place it in the right position!
And yes SELLERS PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE LENS HAS TO BE FOR NIKON MOUNT!

Have you already found it ? ;)
How much is your budget for the lens ?
If there is No more warranty still OK for you ?
Isaac - March 26, 2009 06:52 PM (GMT)
I have found a seller who will reserve it for me on Clubsnap.com!
My budget is >$650 without warranty and lens must be in good condition with no scratches. Preferably with original 77mm filter and both front and rear caps. :)
Jeff - March 27, 2009 05:20 AM (GMT)
That's great for you !
Because I have browsed at Clubsnap also and could't find someone who want to sell Tokina 12-24 F4 (Nikon mount) recently !
Shoud be an old ads ?
One question ?
Why do you choose Tokina 12-24 F/4 over Tokina 11-16 F/2.8 ?
The weight reason ? Or something else ?
Isaac - March 27, 2009 07:01 AM (GMT)
Because I cannot find it. :P
Jeff - March 27, 2009 03:37 PM (GMT)
So how's the deal ?
How much do you pay ? Is there any scratch or mark ?
What accessories do you get ?
Hope seeing you post the pic of the new lens !
Of course posting at the proper place ;)

This links might be useful for you :
http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=494382Tokina 12-24 f/4 - $600 - Warranty until Oct 2009
Hope this link can help you a bit
Isaac - March 27, 2009 09:02 PM (GMT)
I haven't bought the lens yet.. Will only get it somewhere in early April!
Lens is $600 with front and rear caps with original Tokina 77mm filter with no scratches or dents on the lens at all!
Will definitely be posting pics of the lens once I get it.. :D
Thanks Jeff, the link was of great help!
I'll contact the seller and see where it goes. I don't like the fact that there's no filter though.
Jeff - March 28, 2009 04:52 AM (GMT)
Well you can buy lens and filter separately ...
You can buy a new branded (hoya/tokina) 77mm filter around $50, I think ?
Or a new unbranded filter for around $35 ?
or the 2nd hand filter ;)
There is someone selling wide angle lens from Tamron
Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Dill - $700 - warranty until December 2009
http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=494506Next time you can search in the web by yourself, I just try to help you by posting some ads
Isaac - March 28, 2009 05:03 AM (GMT)
I'm not very interested in the Tamron because of its build, focusing speed and zoom range.. The only wideangles I'm looking at are the Tokina and Nikkor lenses but thanks for the link anyway. :D
As for the filter I'm quite lazy to go out to a shop and actually purchase one myself so I figure I might as well just get it together with the lens since most people sell their lenses with filters already attached. :)
Jeff - March 28, 2009 05:09 AM (GMT)
Well, I think 10 - 24 mm become a trend for Ultra Wide Angle lens
After Tamron released SP AF 10-24mm F3.5-4.5, Nikon will follow them
See this link about the new Nikkor lens ! Nikkor AF-S 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5G ED DX !
http://nikonrumors.com/So better you consider the 2.4x zoom lens ! ;)
Isaac - March 28, 2009 05:13 AM (GMT)
But even if they came out with this new lens it will still be very expensive to buy 1st hand!
And it will be a while before anyone starts selling theirs as 2nd hands.. sooo.. have to see first I guess  So so hard to choose lenses!
Jeff - March 28, 2009 05:17 AM (GMT)
Yeah yeaah you are right.
It might be more expensive comparing with Nikkor 12-24mm f/4
A new product is always expensive
So just grab the Tokina 12-24 f/4 laar, and consider to upgrade later ;)
Jeff - April 6, 2009 10:24 PM (GMT)
So how is your new ultra wide angle lens ? ;)
Isaac - April 9, 2009 10:05 PM (GMT)
Unfortuntely.. I think that I might not be able to get this lens at this time. Might have to wait a few months more :(
Jeff - April 12, 2009 04:35 AM (GMT)
Aah sorry to hear that, what happened ?
Financial difficulty ?
Just sell the one that you rarely used to add the budget for this lens :)
Isaac - April 12, 2009 01:08 PM (GMT)
Yup.. have been having a huge hole in my wallet recently unfortunately..
I have actually thought about parting with my 80-200mm but I don't really think it's the best thing to do because I would like the lens on hand whenever I need it. E.g. events and so on..
Jeff - April 12, 2009 03:47 PM (GMT)
I did similar things.
Previously tried to keep my 50mm f/1.4 lens for several months in my dry cabinet, before finally sold it to refund for other lens
