Title: Photography Classes

pawpet - March 24, 2009 03:30 PM (GMT)
I know most "sony" classes are held @ sony digital workshop but unfortunately the timing is not suitable for me.

I just bgt my Sony A300 and want to take really good pics and also preparing for my holiday in the States in June. Are there any classes elsewhere that uses Sony Camera. I see alot of classes held by others but they may not be using the Sony Camera.

Can please advise.

Honestly, you don't need professionals to teach your how to maximize the potential of your camera..

In fact, everything you need to know is already on the internet or in the library!

The fundamentals are all the same no matter what camera you use - Sony, Nikon, Canon, Pentax, etc.

I'm sure if you ask nicely, the shifus on this forum will gladly meet up with you and teach you the fundamentals for free instead of having to pay a hefty price for a sit-in lesson! :D

Hi pawpet, my name is Keith, nice to meet you :)

If you really can't book a suitable time slot at sdw, maybe i can help you. I am familiar with the Sony A300 and I have free time next week to go through A300 fundamentals with you. :)

Thanks a zillion. Am also going for the sunday 6-9pm class. I wanted so much to attend the night photography but unfortunately it is full. Am going to the states in June and therefore want to arm myself with as much skills as possible so that my photos will turn out great.

Was using a panasonic previously and i notice in the sony, gridlines are not displayed. Histogram are also not displayed until you review the pics taken.

In the OVF view, the ISO is not displayed right?

In the OVF, ISO is displayed on your screen together with other settings. If that is what you're asking ...

Good to hear that you manage to find time to attend the class.

In Liveview mode, pressing the disp button will give you a live histogram.

Prepare well the other details especially lodgings and places of interest to have a great holiday :)

Hi all,

Here is my 2 cents worth on attending formal photography classes.

Since buying my A350 with SAL18250mm lens last July, I have decided NOT to attend formal classes. With due respects to Julian and others who are shifus, I have not attended any SDW or other DSLR formal training. Together with the camera's manual, I have downloaded some 4GB of training articles on almost every aspect from the net which I am going thru to self teach myself. My PC skills are also self-taught. And like PC skills, if you lay off for a while, you will get rusty. Hence to self learn results in more steadfast memory.

Isaac is right to say the fundamentals are the same whichever brand you use.

I find it very satisfying to attend the school of hard knocks and thru practice & practice & practice. I am especially encouraged by a recent ST article which reported a senior citizen aged 65 who is self-taught winning a great international wild life photography prize. One the other hand, I have a friend who has been active professionally for 40 years, that is, he earn some money thru using his skills, who has yet to reach such an amazing achievement.

This does not suggest one cannot learn from others. THE JWP Forum is one of several avenues (others being Flickr & a few others) for me to learn from others here as well as partake in its activities

Of course I do not aspire to win anything. But would be gratified knowing I am continuously improving & improving & enjoying my photography & the company I run into. :P

Learning is a never ending journey!

bearbear90 - March 31, 2009 03:58 AM (GMT)
yupz.. truly agree with Evonne~*

thanks for sharing Robert.. I believe we will learn in this road of painting with lights... :)

Isaac - April 1, 2009 04:23 PM (GMT)
Indeed, the road of self-instruction is long and tiresome sometimes, but is often rewarding!

And yes, the JWP Forum is a perfect avenue for improving one's photography skills and I can vouch for it happily because I have learned almost everything I possibly can from the shifus and shimus on this forum. :)

ChaoxAngel - April 8, 2009 02:35 PM (GMT)
Well, I have two cameras...

a100
a700

And both - if there are complimentary training sessions... I didn't attend it...

I now wonder if those training sessions' got an expiry date.

Well, no matter how adept somebody's at... I still feel like joining - maybe out of curiousity, but perhaps, even after shooting for a while, there might be stuff that I've missed.

^_^

soulexpress - April 8, 2009 03:37 PM (GMT)
Yes Angel,

There is an expiry to the training sessions.
