Title: Prime Lens Fanatic

runveryfast - May 19, 2009 12:56 PM (GMT)
Hi Guys,

I had been using the 50mm 1.4f prime lens for awhile and has enjoyed it so much that I'm sort of addicted to prime lens. Its fast and sharp, what more can you ask?

I'm just wondering if anyone has used the 20mm and 28mm so far? Why is everyone raving about the 50mm? I had read good reviews about the 28mm that it is just about as good as the 50mm, in fact it has a better usable focal length at 42mm (for APS-C). I often find myself backing to the wall with the 50mm (75mm for APS-C)

Any comments are welcome. :D

Well, the nature of my work doesn't allow me the luxury of being able to move much, so primes are out of the question for me, even though they are desirable.

Having quite a bit of usage experience with a lot of prime lenses:

35 1.4, 50 1.4, 50 1.7, 85 1.4 (both G and CZ), 135 2.8, 135 1.8 and 200 2.8.

what I hope that sony would come out with is a 24mm f1.4 lens. That on a full frame gives reasonable background separation at a wide angle. That's what I would want.

Depend what do you like to shoot.

If you like to shoot the half body shoot, use 50 mm f/1.4 prime.
If you like to shoot portrait with the background, use 20 or 28 mm prime.

Notes : that's for using the lens with APS-C and indoor shooting which only limited space is available to move ;)

ChaoxAngel & Jeff,

Thanks for the comments, will be definitely looking at purchasing a 28mm since the 20mm is so $$. :D

Well, if you have enough budget, just buy 17-55 f/2.8

For your info, I went to Bintan with JWP friends using that lens.

Of course the sharpness is not as good as prime lens, but zoom lens is more versatile ;)

Which branch of lens are you referring to? Couldn't find this spec for Sony lens.

Wow!

That's a whopping $3K!!! If I can afford that, the 20mm priime wouldn't be an issue to buy already. Thanks anyway. :D
