Title: Experimental Teleportation
Description: Simply an idea
The Unknown - April 14, 2008 09:24 PM (GMT)
So the idea is this: My character Thomas Warren in a stuggle to gain fame and fortune partnered up with a scientist who was able to figure out how to make teleportation possible. After months of working together in secret, the prototype is completed, but in order to do so, laws were broken, and the scientist was killed in a C-Sec raid and the prototype would have been destroyed. Thomas would then be the only person left with the information to build these quantum teleportation devices capable of simultaneously transporting inanimate objects across the universe.
So why is this important? Well, whoever is able to fully implement the concepts of this new technology would essentially make it unnecessary to transport goods via ships to other destinations, making it even faster than mass relays and FTL travel. Making transporting goods extremely cheap and fast.
Now how can you be involved? Think about it. By having this technology, there is a LOT of money to be made, anyone with this information is essentially in a position to control the economy.
Could this be a bit too powerful? Not really since the teleportation only truly works for inanimate objects. If a living being tries to use the teleportation on themself, their original body would be essentially vaporized and copied elsewhere, creating many unforeseeable problems. As such persons would still have to travel by ship.
Like I said though, this is just an idea. I already have most of the initial parts figured out, so if the idea is liked, I can start it nearly immediately. Let me know what you think, or ask questions if you have any.

Couple of ideas:
-Big power consumption
-Teleportation process takes a while for dematerialzing and rematerializing, like a few minutes per item.
-Must have 1 unit per location in order to teleport (otherwise you just scatter the item's submolecular stuff everywhere)

This does sound interesting. As long as you can fully explain how the teleportation works then I am okay with it.
Each teleportation should take an insane amount of power.

I don't know rasen, if you use eezo to lighten the mass of the object, completely break it down to a molecular level and blast it across space... It would still take a huge amount of power.... never mind... Sign Artemis on as an assassin sent by a shipping company due to... protection of interests.

Okay, so after a little more research this is what I got for the actual method for teleportation.
1. The devices would greatly vary in size, but the larger they are, the more power would be needed. (To teleport an object roughly the size of a tank, a small nuclear reactor would be needed just for that one teleporter. For larger objects, an entire powerplant could be needed for sufficient power.)
2. The devices would not be very mobile as they got larger. (most would have to be assembled in one place and remain there.)
3. The devices would have to be paired, or as part of a network. (I'll explain this later with a diagram or something once I get one made.)
4. The devices CANNOT teleport living beings. (The sheer nature of quantum teleportation requires the original copy of the teleported object is destroyed. Then the copy is what is teleported and molecularly reassembeled. Teleporting a living thing could seriously mess things up as it is not at all known if the consciousness of the person would be transferred as well.)
5. The further the distance, the more time it takes to teleport. (While it is still much, MUCH faster than standard shipping, it would still take at least an hour to teleport a large object across the milky way.)
I hope that helps a little bit in the explanation. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Someone wanna kill off a character to test #4 : P

Okay, so here's my crude diagrams:

So as you can see, the black dots are the teleporters for this diagram.

Anyways, The way the teleporters work, you can start at any device, and can teleport to any other device in a point-to-point style. The teleporters are universal as well, so you can start at any teleporter and send the objects to any other teleporter.

However, you cannot teleport objects to any point in space, you have to send it to another teleporter to recieve it.
So I hope that helps clear it up even more.
...OH! and also, Enterprise brought up a good point earlier as well, one rule I forgot to mention is that it does take time to break apart objects particle by particle so:
6. Larger objects require more time to be broken apart and reassembled when teleporting.
So, now the technical explanations should be taken care of... :)

Let us hope that one of our alliance personel doesnt get into one with a fly... flashback "brundel fly" O.o

All right, so now that the technical details have been thoroughly explained ( :P ) I can go to the story itself. So overall, it will be mostly a freeflowing plot, nothing is set in stone really. Sometime tomorrow or Wednesday probably I'll get the story started. After that point, only the overall objectives are definite.
On one side is my character who simply wants to both survive, remain out of police custody, and sell the technology for a fortune. Another side would be anyone who would want to purchase the technology for any reason, or to assist in the further development in the technology. The third side would of course be the dissenters. They want the technology wiped from memory, either by destroying any relevant data, or by eliminating anyone involved with the technology.
Personally, I like the plots that don't follow much scripted structure, so anything is possible in this. If my character dies, he dies (although hopefully only as a last resort). If the technology becomes a success or fails, it simply happens. And also, any comments would still be appreciated. Thanks for listening to my rambling anyways. :)

I like it, and claim the third estate for my charrie :) This seems like a relatively major plot point though. If this works... Mass effect is changed forever...

Cant transport LIVING things huh... Geth arent living.
The Unknown - April 16, 2008 01:41 AM (GMT)
All right, so I'm going to start this in Chora's Den, so just wait for my post if you want to join in somehow.

The geths memory would probably be wiped out though due to the amount of EM fields and what not : P

heh, Imagine one big enough to teleport a reaper!
