The Systems Alliance Military is made up of three branches:
Alliance Navy
The Alliance Navy is the oldest and largest branch of the Human Systems Alliance. It conducts naval operations. The Navy operates the deep-space vessels, such as frigates, cruisers, and dreadnaughts. This is the equivalent of the blue-water navies of Earth, namely the most powerful navy on Earth: the United States Navy. The US, being the sole super-power of the world, had the most influence, and so the Alliance military generally adopts its traditons from the US. The Navy and Marine Corps use a modified version of US Navy ranks.

Alliance Marine Corps
The Alliance Marine Corps was the second service created after the Navy when the need for armies arrived during the First Contact War. Because any army would need to be deployed from starships anyway, it was decided the new service should be called the Marine Corps, as marines, not soldiers, conducted "amphibious" assault landings. The Marine Corps utilizes tanks and armored personnel carriers like armies did back on Earth. The only naval personnel that frequently sees ground combat is the Orbital Deployment, Reconnaissance, Infiltration, and Assault Force-S Division, which is the 23rd century equivalent of the Navy SEALs of Earth. The Navy and Marine Corps use a modified version of US Navy ranks.
Alliance Space Command
The smallest branch of the Alliance Military, the Space Command is the equivalent of air forces back on Earth. Instead of mobile command centers, the ASC (pronounced "ay-ess-see" or "ask") utlizes space stations (however, the one at Arcturus is a naval space station, like a naval port on Earth). The ASC also makes use of long range, Mass Relay and FTL-capable starfighters, unlike the Navy, which only has short range FTL fighters. They also have shuttles, used for short-range transportation (like helicopters; the Navy and Marine Corps also use shuttles) and cargo freighters about the size of merchant ships. The majority of ASC personnel stay on planet-side command posts or space stations. It was established in 2167. The ASC uses a modified version of US Army/Air Force ranks, as a sense of pride and tradition.
