Title: Thyss Ascendency
Description: New Species

Vasto Duval - January 28, 2008 04:14 AM (GMT)
Just before I get into any details here on this organization, this is actually a new race I'm introducing that originates from the Terminus System. The Thyss Ascendency is the government of the Thyss species, so... in order to join them you'd have to be one of them in the first place. On another note, if you want to have input on fleshing out the Thyss a little more, I would more than welcome the opinions of others.

Common Appearance:
The Thyss' are known to be a smaller species, yet very fast and agile despite their deceptively heavy weight. Their skin is made up of a thick hide that covers their large bones and vital organs. It is important to note that all Thyss also have five finger and toes, much like the human race, but also includes claws on each finger and toe.
Clothing
Unlike most civilizations of the galaxy, the Thyss heavily regard clothing as stature and rank within the Thyss Ascendancy’s society. The more a Thyss wears and the more elaborate it is in design, the higher their rank and stature is. Naturally, they would need to earn these positions beforehand as Warlords would wear heavy battle armor and Overseers (see government for more information) would acquire exquisite robes.

Culture:
Because the Thyss are divided into hundreds of distinct Clans, it is known that the Thyss differ in regards to culture, though there are a few traditions that all Clans share in common.

The Thyss have always had a reputation of being one of the most vile and vicious species in the Terminus System. Being that the species is carnivorous, instead of burying their dead, they devour them. Because of their cannibalistic nature, many Thyss have been known to eat their enemies alive, whether they be Thyss or of another species.

As the Thyss females lay eggs, they will often have many children. While many Thyss prefer to only have one child, over a time of many years they will choose the strongest or the most capable of the children then slaughter the rest. This way, the Thyss are left with only the best of offspring to carry out the family or Clan name.

The majority Thyss are prone to have hunting and deathmatches as mainstream forms of entertainment. Hunting will often involve larger animals or creatures, frequently being predators themselves. Unlike other species that enjoy the sport of hunting, the Thyss will use their brute strength along with their claws and horns to kill their prey, instead of mechanical weapons. As a form of entertainment, Clans will set up vast arenas with several hidden cameras throughout the environment which is often jungles, forests, or swamps. Hunters may hunt alone or in groups against several predators. Spectators usually prefer watching an individual hunt as the individual will often not come out alive.

Very much like the sport of hunting, deathmatches are instead against other Thyss or large groups of slaves from other species. Also unlike hunting, competitors are allowed to wield weapons. The deathmatches are set in outdoor arenas, usually the ones used for hunts, others are small and indoor and are for one vs. one matches where the participants will rip each other apart. The indoor matches are much like human boxing or wrestling, except for the difference that only one will walk out of the arena alive.

The Thyss have several other blood sports that differ in various way, but typically hunting and deathmatches are the more mainstream for the Thyss Ascendency.

Religion:
In practice, the Thyss may not seem all that religious as they do not worship their ‘God’. However, their beliefs do revolve around that of those who created the Mass Relays and the ‘holy element’, also known as Element Zero to other civilizations. Their God was also responsible for the creation of the Universe, but the Mass Relays along with the holy element were left behind as gifts to the creatures of the galaxy. Unlike most civilizations, they don’t believe the Protheans had anything to do with the Mass Relays.

It was when the Thyss Ascendency was first venturing out into space that they had discovered the remains of a Prothean mine on the planet, Scatha. In this mine, they had come into contact with Element Zero, or the ‘holy element’, as it was later called. After decades of studying the substance and the research left behind by the Protheans, they found its uses a biotic power and as material capable of powering ship engines to go faster than light speed. They believed the holy element was left behind for them to discover and allow them travel the vastness of space and unleash the divine power of the God.

The Clan that had discovered the holy element, now known as they Prophets, still remains at this mining facility as they believe they were given the right to choose whomever they wished to be allowed to enter. It is traditional that The Divine One be allowed this power upon gaining the position. In the case of when The Divine One is granted to be exposed to the holy element and becomes impaired in any way, they are then killed by the Prophets who claim The Divine One an abomination of their species and unworthy of the Divine powers. Being that the Thyss Ascendency is left without a leader, an election is held one again for a new Divine One.

Government:
The Thyss Ascendency is made up of hundreds of clans that stretch throughout the vastness of space from the Terminus and beyond. However, only a few dozen clans make up the majority of the people and it is these clans who usually are the ones vying for power in the Ascendency. At the head of each clan is the Overseer, who is commonly known as the Clan Master by other species. While the Overseer is in charge of all economic, religious, and all other affairs relating to the well beings of the Clan’s people, the Warlord deals with military issues, which is more than often ensuring the protection and defense of the people.

From the beginning of Thyss recorded history, there has always been one Clan that ruled all other Clan’s with absolute rule. Traditionally, the Overseers of every Clan would gather once every century on Falshire, their home world, and it was here that a tournament would be organized. In this tournament, the Overseers were pitted against each in brutal one vs. one unarmed matches where only one would come out alive. The result was a strong leader of the Thyss Ascendency, but it also left every other clan without leaders which often was the reason for many of the Thyss Civil Wars. This leader was also known as The Divine One.

Almost 1000 years ago was the last time this type of election was used. The reason why was because it was during the Third Thyss-Batarian War where the Batarian nearly wiped out their entire race due to a chaotic society after the Clan Tournament. Few Clans were left able to withhold themselves, while others were in ruins as there was only a few thousand of the Thyss left. Over time the Thyss rebuilt themselves and debated over a new system for gaining a leader of the Thyss Ascendency. This system still had all the Overseers of every Clan gather every 100 years but it would be for debates and campaigning until, ultimately, one was chosen to lead their people with a 95% confidence vote.

The new system was democratic in nature, but once the Overseer of their ‘Master’ Clan was chosen, they had rule over absolutely anything as nobody could oppose their rule. Unlike the Overseers of each individual Clan, The Divine One also had the responsibilities of a Warlord, but for the military of the Thyss Ascendency as a whole.

The Thyss have always strongly believed in the good nature of their species to be able so solve disputes without laws or that of a justice system. This is generally looked down upon by other species considering the several Civil Wars that have occurred because of this belief. However, despite there being no laws or justice system, the Thyss follow their religious beliefs, which effectively state that The Divine One is a God and his/her Clan is absolute. And recently, after the new system of Government was established, no Civil War has occurred in the Thyss Ascendency.

Military:
Based on the military doctrine of the Thyss Ascendency, they just might possibly be the least organized military power among all civilizations, yet they can be surprisingly efficient.

Ranking in the Thyss Ascendency is virtually non-existent. The Divine One controls all military activity as his/her orders rein supreme over all. Individual fleets and armies are controlled by the Clan Warlords. Those people under the command of these Warlords have no rank and as far as small units go, the leaders of these units elect themselves to carry out the orders of the Warlord.

Because each Clan has their own army and individual ship or fleet, there really is no focal point where the Military is strongest with the exception of Falshire, their homeworld and Scatha, the location of their holy element. This leaves their army stretched out and for the most part, defenseless. To counter this ‘weakness’ of theirs, the Thyss can easily gather fleets from local planets or systems by command of The Divine One.

Planetary defense, presently, is an important issue for the Thyss Ascendency considering the small fleets that defend each colony. Over the last century the Thyss have been setting up large orbital platforms around key planets, mostly in their home system, while those Clans with enough money set their own up to defend their colonies and planets. The Orbital Defense Platform’s (ODP) are capable of tearing through the armor of a cruiser with their twelve semi-automatic turrets. These turrets are equipped with large 12 ton missiles that cause a large explosion on impact. The drawback of the size and weight of these missiles is that they’re slow and are usually only good at medium distance while a ship can still shoot the missiles down or dodge them if they can’t disarm the multiple missiles.

Aside from the ODP’s, the Thyss have installed have several SAM sites across several planets across Thyss Ascendency space. Although they may be well defended against aerial attacks, this leaves them open to groundside attacks as soldiers will be scattered across the planet in various places, defending their Clans.

Nice. You could probably just strike out the History section, as you've covered their history fairly well in the government sections. So long as Rasen approves, you're good to go.
