The United Republics of the Kali (UR)




Common Appearance:

Kali have an interesting physical appearance and anatomy. Their jaw is quadruple-hinged, with an upper jaw and four Mandible-like lips, which are lined with sharp teeth. The Kali are omnivorous, mostly dining on meat from animals in their controlled worlds. Their hands only have four fingers; two middle fingers and two opposing thumbs on the outside for grasping. Their legs are digitigrade, allowing them to run very quickly and jump large distances, at least when compared to ordinary humans and other species. They do however find it difficult to climb. Their hooves and leg structure give them excellent balance. Kali also have massive muscles; nearly double that of a human.

Kali have two hearts andhave purple blood due to Cobalt based hemoglobin rather than the Iron based protein of humans. They can breathe in a variety of atmospheres, from Carbon Dioxide to Oxygen. They also have a double set of pectoral muscles, which allows their incredible strength. They usually have grayish-brown skin but it can range from plain Grey to a dark blue., and the majority of Kali lighter eyes, although there are a few exceptions. Kali have snake-like eyes, with horizontal split eyelids and placement on the sides of the head

Kali have highly advanced minds, allowing them to use telepathic powers, a substitute to their lack of biotics due to never seeing Prothean technology. They can use their minds for Telekinesis, Telepathy, and in some of the older Kali, Pyrokinesis.

Clothing

Clothing is practically non-existent in Kali Society. Only the 'exiles' wear clothes due to being stripped of their Armor. Kali Armor varies in color and design to denote military service, rank, family, and even wealth. Armor is usually given to Kali at the Adolescent stage, and the wearer will keep the same armor till death in most cases.

0% : Crime is considered treason, and looked down upon. Anyone that commits a crime higher than theft is put to death, making the civilization very safe. Only very few actual criminals exist in Kali society.

The Kali live and act much like humans. Culture tends to vary world to world, but incorporates similar motifs in each. Music is a large part of their culture, several forms exist. However music similar to Classical Music in Human Society is the most popular among the species. Advanced Schools are similar to our colleges; About 65 percent of the Kali population has graduated from AS. Military plays a big role in the culture, males are conscripted at the age of 150 to serve in the Kali Military for a minimum of 35 years.

Religion:

The Kali believe in the Preceptor, an ancient force behind the workings of the universe. It would be similar to most Human Religions God, as it is speculated by them that the Preceptor could take material form. Almost 99% of the population believes in this particular 'God', while 1% are similar to Atheists in Human Society.

Government:

The Kali live under the United Republics, an organization that was formed approximately 70000 years ago after a violent series of wars known as the Disputes. The government is a Communistic Democracy, and all Kali are considered equal and work only for the betterment of the species. Citizens are those who have served in the military, or work in the Governments. Kali unable to serve are not looked down upon, but do not enjoy voting privileges that Citizens have; Other than that non-citizens enjoy life in the UR as much as the rest of the poplulation.

The UR is made up of hundreds of planets populated by the Kali. Government ranges from Dictatorships to Direct Democracies. However, all decisions made by these governments come under the authority of the UR. These planets have enjoyed peace for almost 35000 years, the last battle occurred when the planet of Xethos uncovered an ancient space station built by the Kali almost 95000 years beforehand.

The main branch of the UR is the Authoritative Branch. It is similar to the US congress and consists of 685 members, one from each planet of the Kali. They make laws, regulate the military, and enforce those laws.

Military:

The military of the Kali is huge, well equipped, and very orderly. Due to conscription, the army maintains about 8 billion active military members across its territories. They have a vast interstellar fleet with FTL capabilities. The military is seen to some as a waste of resources, saying that the species had been living in peace since the formation of the UR.

The main type of weaponry used by the Kali are plasma based weapons, and can be recharged with either solar energy, heat, or recharge from a ships on board weapon chargers. The guns batteries last very long if used properly, In a fire fight the guns tend to wear out faster, but can still dish out about an hour of continuous fire. At normal use, about a few rounds a minute, it can last for days. They use a prototype recharge mechanism on board that allows it to convert heat to energy, but only at about a 5% recuperation.

Technology:

They are highly advanced as a species, having technology ranging from FTL, extended life spans, plasma weaponry, and have even recently created basic perpetual energy systems. They have not however discovered the Mass Relays or Prothean technology.

Infrastructure:

The infrastructure of the Kali can be found on every planet they inhabit. It is maintained by the UR and consists of transportation networks, hospitals, communications, etc. The URs Archos System, a network that consists of FTL communications and allows for near instantaneous data transmission and receiving, handles the Kalis communications and computer systems. Transportation is usually done by smaller ships and ferries. However, city transportation systems are made up of MAGLEV subway systems. The system allows for travel of about Mach 3 around cities allowing Kali to get to where they are going quickly.

Economy:

The economy of the Kali is extremely strong, comparable to that of even the Asaris. Trade between planets forms one of the basic foundations of the economy. Technology, Exploration, and Science make up a major part of the industry, with huge companies backing technology firms. The main unit of currency is the Valuke (VAL-lou-k), equivalent to about 20 credits.

Shipbuilding is a smaller, but vital part of the economy, but only accounts for 8% of total business.

History:

The Species is about 210,000 years old, making it the oldest form of sentient life in the galaxy.

The Kali initially developed from simple silicon based life, after carbon was introduced by a meteor impact on the planet Argath, the species started to evolve rapidly. The life forms would eventually accept carbon into their structure, allowing for double and triple bonding vital to complex life. Over the course of about 290 thousand years the earliest forms of the Kali were evolved enough to start simple civilizations. Their primary energy source was that of other species, plants and other organisms. Vocal chords started to develop to allow for basic communication. At this point their anatomy was comparable to early Homo Sapiens, although they stood much shorter and had a bluish skin tone.

After about 60000 years the Kali managed to build a civilization with capabilities of that close to that of ours at the time of the late 1900s. The Allied States of Argath, a direct democracy based on their beliefs in rights for all Kali, governed the species. The civilization started to develop basic space travel, and its first space exploration resulted in probes sent to other planets.

After the Zeneth Company created NSLT, or near speed of light travel, which allowed for travel 53% the speed of light. The Allied States turned their intentions outward, colonizing several planets around Argath and swallowing up resources in the mad dash for space. Luckily, the cluster was not near any Mass Relays, allowing it to survive Reaper destruction.
At about the 150000-year mark in the civilization, the Kali took on their modern appearance, and have changed very little since that point. Also at this point the Kali reached a life span of 500 years. The species quickly reached its maximum area of colonization as defined by the Allied States; A maximum area in which supply routes, communications, and migration are to lengthy and therefore inefficient.

About 40000 years later the Kali perfected FTL, allowing for colonization far further than any previous boundaries faced by their kind. Unknown to the Kali, several Mass Relays lay only a light year or two away from then, but had been passed over and never found. Due to them not opening the Relays, they were able to remain safe from Reaper destruction.

Only once had a reaper entered their system, passing over as it found no evidence of intergalactic travel and dismissed the civilization as underdeveloped. It was at the last return, the cycle of genocide that ended the Protheans civilization. This was achieved as most of the colonies around that area were just at the fringes, and were several hundred thousands miles from the nearest colonies in the same state. Trips at this distance were rare, and only occurred about ever 500 years as the military sent out ships to make sure the Colonies were still 'healthy'.

The next 20000 years of the civilization were rather calm; the planets had the occasional conflict, usually only about whom got what colonies and worlds. This would change however as the Allied States fell apart, unable to maintain dominance over the vast number of individual governments. The Disputes began as the territory of the Kali was taken over by the individual governments, forming about 200 countries that encompassed anywhere from 20 to 1 planet each.

As the wars raged, the planets started to break apart, forming a government on almost every individual planet. This was how the 685 planets came to be. However, each planet carried with it numerous colonies, those of which were used from resources to military bases. Almost 20 new planet governments were formed every 100 years.

The UR was formed, bringing an end to the almost 5000 years of conflicts and battles across the system. This was the start of the Age of Advancement, leading to the wondrous technologies the Kali enjoy today.
