Title: Reggie Bush
luniz - April 28, 2006 12:19 PM (GMT)
How come people say Bush is the best RB since Barry Sanders, or the next Gale Sayers. When it sounds like his game is much more comparable to Marshall Faulk. Is the next Marshall Faulk not good enough for people? Isn't Faulk gonna be a hall of famer, didn't he change the position? Wouldn't teams be crazy to pass up on the next Faulk?

I think you have a very valid point, his game is much more like Faulk as far as catching the ball. The main difference is Bush has break away speed and Faulk didn't.

I dont know which Faulk you where watching Cornbread but when he was in his prime he had break away speed, just not recently as his skills have declined and he has lost a few steps.
The reason why people dont associate Bush with Faulk more is his body type. Bush is taller and leaner while Faulk is more of a squat running back if that makes sense. Bush has more the build of a WR than a HB, while Faulk looks like a HB.

I guess you're right about the body types, but then again Barry Sanders was squat and thick too. And you're 100% right about Faulk having breakaway speed, my god at SDSU he put up so many long TD runs it was incredible. When he came to St. Louis everybody knew he had the speed to get outside but I think his power is what surprised people.
Now if Bush can have Marshall Faulk type power in the NFL...then damn right he should be a #1 pick. I'm not convinced of it though.

Faulk was fast in his prime but not in the same league as Reggie Bush. Bush has an extra gear that we haven't seen in the NFL since probably Tony Dorsett.
sithoverlord - April 29, 2006 05:36 AM (GMT)
I do agree Bush is faster than Faulk but I think it a bit unfair to say Faulk didnt have breakaway speed. Faulk is the most impressive scat back to ever play in the NFL in my book. Faulk was after all a top 5 pick once too, 4th overall.
I think Bush is going to be a Packer, Javon Walker and the 5th for the 2nd looks like the ticket right now.

The reason people compare Bush to Sayers is they have the same body type. Bush 6-1 201lbs Sayers 6ft 200lbs. They both are great return men. And both have that extra gear only great ones do. Faulk in his prime was fast, but not extraordinary fast. Bush and Sayers bring a speed to the game that's kinda like catching lightening in a bottle.

People can say what they want about Bush. I personally even hate USC. However, the positives cannot be denied. I keep reading about how he may be a bust. He has amazing vision, unparalleled athleticism, and I was very impressed with his workout and work ethic to prepare him for his pro day. I as a Saints fan, hope we take him and keep him, but I have a sneaking suspicion that cheap boy Benson will trade him away. It is our lot in life as Saints fans. Bush will be a winner wherever he lands.

When Bush realizes he cant bounce everything outside he will be limited. His vison in open field is great ,but if he cant get too open field what then..He lacks vision to run between the tackles and to be a productive everydown back you need to pound the rock up the gut at least 15-20 times a game. I seem to recall when USC needed that 3-5 yards of hard up the gut running they brought in L. White. People seem to get caught up in Bush's speed and open field running. The NFL is faster and LB's and Saftey's can close on the corners something Bush hasent seen yet...I hope he does well but Houston was smart taking Williams over him...

He certainly won't be able to pull away from people in the NFL like he did in college, but he won't suffer the slippage so many apparently blind naysayers predict. He has great speed in all directions, terrific vision and runs with purpose.

That is a pretty decent lineup. Bush can be used in so many ways. His presence will open up the running game for Deuce. As a 3rd down back his natural ability will be rivaled by few. I know, he hasn't played in a single NFL game, but he is for real. I haven't been this excited since LSU won the National title in 2003. ^_^

why can't he bounce everything outside? barry sanders made an entire career out of that. he also lost more yards than anyone in NFL history as well.

the reason why barry sanders did that is because the o-line is so bad that he already had at least 1 defender in the backfield when he get the handoff. basically, he had to make it all on his own with his unqiue running style.

don't give me the so bad offensive line routine. walter payton played behind some pretty bad offensive lines for a good part of his career, and he still got it done. barry always looked to bounce it outside and use his speed.

Here's the thing to worry about though, Bush is already gimpy at the Saints mini-camp. MRI was clean, but he's hurting. You have to wonder how he stands up to the pounding at the NFL level.
orez28 - May 19, 2006 08:05 PM (GMT)
anyone can say that, pulling a hamstring has nothing to do with contact at the nfl level, anyone can pull a hamstring, this shouldnt make you question anything about the change from college to the pros
