Knaves - September 28, 2006 05:09 PM (GMT)
So, being once again down some terrible illness, I have plenty of time on my hands and so I went ahead and typed up the interview. Here it is without the scans for anyone to do whatever.

Galactica star Nicki Clyne talks to Starburst about her character's developement in the show's thrid season.
Interview by Steven Eramo

There's one thing that Nicki Clyne, aka Crewman Specialist Cally, on Battlestar Galactica wants to make perfectly clear at the start of the interview. "Anything Aaron Douglas might have said about me [in his interview] is absolutely false. The two of us are usually partners in crime, especially on set, but whenever Aaron is out of earshot he totally turns on me." jokes the actress.

Clyne and Douglas, who plays Chief Tyrol, are among those Galactica actors who, along with the show's crew, have been working the past three days at the Richmond Sand Dunes in British Columbia dilming scenes for the third season episode Unfinished Business. With their characters' friendship having blossomed into a romance, Cally and Tyrol were married at the end of the show's second season and are now expecting their first child. Their finally coming together was, oddly enough, the result of a very unsetteling event where Tyrol accidentally assaulted Cally during a violent stupor in the Year Two finale Lay Down Your Burdens.

"That was very controversial and I knew that some viewers would be shocked by that scene and, obviously, the scenes that followed," explains Clyne. "It was difficult and really quite heart-wrenching to go through something like that because Aaron and I share a close relationship off set. We're good friends and we care about one another, so those scenes were tough to do, probably much more so for Aaron as he emotionally had to get to a place of pure rage in order to 'beat' me. Conversely, I had to lie there and take it while being careful not to injure myself. At one point, both Aaron and I misjudged things and I ended up actually getting hit in the face. Being a true professional, though, I managed to carry on," she laughs.

"If you watched the episode, you might remember that Tyrol came to see Cally afterwards in sickbay to apologise for what he did to her, and with that act of repentance, their relationship was redeemed. I think between the writing and what Aaron and I were able to pull off in the scene, we established where our two characters were at and that allowed things between them to progress.

"We couldn't have just gone from Tyrol beating Cally to them getting married. Obviously, there was more to it, and we were able to show that with the scene in sickbay. I was very pleased with how everything played out, and it made it more interesting, too. I'd always known that Cally was in love with the chief and wondered how long that would remain a secret. Either she would have to profess her love for him, or something awkward needed to happen between them to bring the two together. As we saw, it was the latter, and the outcome was better than Cally could have expected."

At the end of Galactica's second season, a year had passed between our heroes discovering a habitable planet and many of them colonizing it and starting to build the city of New Caprica. Sadly, the Human race's archenemy, the Cylons, arrive at the very last minute to ruin things for all of them. What are Clyne's thoughts on the advancement of the show's timeline? "I have to admit that sometimes when I get a script, I'll flip through it and just look for my character's lines," says the actress. "So just imagine I'm reading [Lay Down Your Burdens]and I see that my character almost dies after being pummelled by the chief, and then I flip forward to the final few pages and Cally is pregnant. I think, 'What's happening?'

"In fact, I didn't take the time to properly read the remainder of the script. Instead, I called Aaron and left him a message asking, 'What are they doing with Tyrol and Cally? I don't understand.' After I hung up, I actually continued reading the script and then it made much more sense," she chuckles. "So the passage of a year was definitely a bit of a shock at first, but it wound up being really exciting for me to play something else outside of Cally's normal work environment. You got to see her as a Human being and hacing a life beyond fixing Vipers, which includes her husband Tyrol and being pregnant. As an actor it's pretty neat to play such dynamic roles and ones that dealt with so many different issues."

In the Season Two Galactica episode Resistance, Cally shoots and kills on the Humanoid Cylon versions of Lt Sharon 'Boomer' Valerii (Grace Park) after the lieutenant's earlier attempt to assassinate Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos). The Galactica Boomer's consciousness is subsequently downloaded into a new Cylon body in a later story, and at the start of Year Three she and Cally have a somewhat heated reunion.

"The very first piece of footage we shot when we came back to work this season was an intense confrontational scene between Cally and Boomer," recalls Clyne. "It was very dramatic and as such a bit daunting. It takes a little time to warm back up to your character after being away from it for a while, so I was worried that I wouldn't be able to jump back into Cally shoes, figuratively speaking , of course, as quickly as I needed to. However, I felt so good about the material, and Gace is just an amazing actress to work with.

"Basically, Cally falls into Cylon hands and Boomer comes to visit her. She's the last person in the universe that my character wants to see because the two of them share quite a history together. On top of that Cally is now with Tyrol, who is the Galactica Boomer's former lover, and my character is concerned, and understandably so, that the chief may still have feelings for Boomer. It's an amazing scene, and something that Grace and I found interesting is that while we were shooting it, we both had these vivid recollections of our characters being on board Galactica and working side-by-side. That's something we'd never talked about before and I just thought it was fascinating that organically we were able to do to such places [acting-wise] without even realizing it. So it was a fantastic war for me to kick off this season."

During the recent Galactica hiatus, Clynehad the chance to meet some of her fans when the actress attended her first Sci-Fi convention in Germany. "It was a small convention, which surprised me that they would arrange to fly us so far to meet with a few hundred fans, but it was an incredible experience." she says. "We were all staying at the same hotel in this little town in Germany and it was really cool to meet people who watch the show and answer questions about anything that they were wondering about."

Clyne's admirers can look forward to seeing her character more often during Galactica's third season. "I've been signed for even more episodes than last year, which I'm thrilled about," says the actress. "When I first auditioned for Galactica i wasn't that familiar with it, and I certainly didn't have any idea what my character would evolve into, so I feel very lucky to be part of such a series."

Final Cut

When Galactica wrapped production of its second season last December, Nicki Clyne had the opportunity to go behind the scenes in a way that was brand new to her, courtesy of the show's longtime director Michael Rymer. "I had never visited Universal Studios where they do all the post-production work for the series," says the actress. "So I went down to Los Angeles and got to meet all the editors and saw them working on the final two episodes of Year Two.

"I actually sat with Michael Rymer and watched him edit several scenes, whcih fascinated me. I mean, what we do as actors is only one piece of the creative process. The addition of the visual effects and editing the whole thing together is a huge part of what makes Galactica what it is. So it was amazing to see how everything works, and Michael was extremely helpful, as well as patient, insofar as explaining the specifics of what he was doing.

"I have to say, too, that Michael is one of my favourite directors. He's very cinematic and is focused on telling the story. Michael always achieves the desired results and makes sure everyone is happy artistically. I'm looking forward to working with him again and seeing what he has in store for our characters."
