Title: Season 4 wishlist
Description: what do we want to see happen?
V - April 12, 2007 01:03 AM (GMT)
Okay guys, I know most of you who originally joined together to create this "online Cally fan following". Those of us who make in the day were watching "33" or then "Bastille Day" and just went "my God, what a good guest character, I hope they use her more".....and then dear God they did! She just kept getting more to do in season 1, and then Season 2.0 was the rollercoaster ride of the Kobol arc, culminating in "Resistance" (probably the best Cally episode. EVER.) in which she shot Boomer. And then Pegasus, which was also great.
Season 3 had a lot of ups and downs for the entire cast; New Caprica was good, but I really hope the whole show really pulls itself back together in Season 4.
The point is, that Cally wasn't in Season 3 enough. On New Caprica, she was FANTASTIC. "Precipice" was standout. But then she was either not on, or didn't get something significant to do, and then "A Day in the Life" and "Dirty Hands" kind of fell flat or made her look annoying.
So much of my "Season THREE wishlist" for Cally went unanswered.
And I mean lets step back for a minute: Who is "Cally Henderson"? Why do we like her so much?
Well, season 3 lost this a bit, but she's the fun secondary character who didn't really want to be in the military she was just ROTCing when the Cylon attack broke out.
On the whole, I want 2 things to happen for the "Show as a whole" before the series ends (in Season FIVE)
1- Bring back the witty dialogue. Because the scripts were rushed, because of time constraints and because re-writes were made at the last minute because of the abandoning of the Sagittaron Storyarc, a lot of the subtle texture of the show was lots of just random witicisms. This hurts secondary characters like Helo, Tyrol, and Cally who live on stuff like this.
A thing RDM brings up alot is "well, we tried having a "funny" episode and we got "Tight Me Up, Tigh Me Down"--->No, I don't want to make a whole "comedy episode", I want them to just insert more snappy dialogue and witticism. Season 3 wasn't really....quotable at all. It was just the characters moping around in a half-wrecked ship feeling despondant.....this can be done for say, all of Season 3.0, but not Season 3.5 as well.
2-Give the secondary cast members backstories and flesh them out as characters. No don't waste a whole episode on it, but just have like 5 minutes where Cottle tells some annecdotes about who he is and what his life was like, or Cally do the same. I mean, we still don't really know alot about Helo; he's been characterized about how he ACTS but not where he comes from.
Anyway, that's it: budget the time better because when random witty lines end up in deleted scenes from going overtime....the show loses a lot. On top of this, actaully round out the secondary cast members.
Okay, so Cally specifically:Things I've actually wanted for a long time since before season 3, since Season 2.0 actually (they didn't really use Cally in Season 2.5):
We wanted Cally to get together with Chief Tyrol, and we got it. The stuff they had when married on New Caprica was good, but again, the episodes just focusing on their married life seem to have been rushed through development.
So, who *is* Cally? Cally's husband is a Final Five Cylon and her child is a Cylon/Human hybrid (or rather, a Final Five/Human hybrid, whatever that means)
Cally spent a year (well 8 months) living as a civilian, and then lived under the Cylon occupation.
Cally is a deckhand on the ship, one of the lowest ranking crewmen; she's defined as "Tyrol's helper"
New info from season 3: she comes from one of the poorer Colonies (stated in "Dirty Hands") which is implied in that she joined the Fleet to pay for dental school.
**She was about to go back to civilian life on the Twelve Colonies because her time of service had JUST given out and when Galactica was decomissioned she was going to be honorably discharged.
So things I'd really like to see are:
- Give Cally physically more screentime. Even if the writers develop some wacky idea for where she goes as a character, even if they make her a VILLAIN (so long as they do not kill her off) develop a "Plan" for Cally. ***Just as the writers said at the end of Season 2 "wow, we didn't give Tigh enough to do, we should think of something BIG for him to do next season"....they need to plan SOMETHING for Cally next year. This year in season 3 she just fell by the wayside. I mean I want something Quotable that I can make fanart based on :)
- Give Cally more backstory; not a whole episode, just have her mention what her past is and how this informs her character in the present. **Giving her a "fun backstory" just for a laugh is meaningless; give her a backstory that will round out how the character acts in the present.
- I think the writers are already planning something for Cally revolving around the fact that Tyrol is a Cylon; the man who has pretty much DEFINED her character up to this point: she's "Tyrol's helper"; she even shot Boomer because she was angry about her hurting him. So I think they'll already have something in play here.
- Cally is now the mother of a Cylon-human hybrid: HOORAY this elevates her to the same level as Caprica-Sharon/Athena in importance within the mythology. I'd like to see how this plays out, but again, I think they "have a plan".
- Perhaps most importantly, Cally needs to be defined beyond her relationship with Galen Tyrol This has been Cally's defining aspect since the Miniseries. It used to be "Tyrol and the Deck Gang" but then the rest of the deck crew, the "lower decks", got killed off and it became just "Tyrol and Cally". Drama is about character interaction, and Cally barely interacted with anyone besides Galen Tyrol in season 3. She needs to be more than just his accessory. Give her a relationship with Seelix or something because they're Best Friends Forever. I mean I don't even know what I want some of the pilot-characters to do in Season 4; Cally meanwhile is stuck on the flight deck most of the time. But give her a quirky hobby that no-one else has. ****Reveal that she had a traumatic and abusive childhood, and worries about how she will raise Nicholas, this mirroring how the Cylons consider themselves the "abused children" of humanity who don't know their place in the world (parent-child relationships always make great drama)....or do we want Cally to have had a happy childhood? Is Cally secretly really "girly" or is she a tomboy?
- Maybe if Tyrol is removed from command of the flight deck (for whatever reason; because maybe by episode 7 or so he stops being leader on the flight deck, is but in prison, whatever) I want to see Cally actually step up to his position. Now logically, there are probably people that might outrank Cally; but then again, she has been seen to be Tyrol's chief "Helper" throughout the series, and the rank structure had kind of broken down and been shifted since season 3 and One Year Later; maybe just because she's worked with Tyrol so extensively she could be next-in-line if something happens to Tyrol.
- Give Cally a relationship with someone else; logically one of the pilots (I mean as friends, saving their life or something; most likely Seelix) because it would be illogical for her to suddenly start a relationship with say Roslin or something.
- Random idea: have the Tyrol/Cally relationship tragically fall apart, making Cally a single mom. Have her "move in" with her good friend Seelix; showing how they can be strong independent women; heck, they can even have someone make a bad-taste comment about them being lesbians (i.e. the YeeHaw boys say this) after which someone else (like Racetrack or Gaeta or something) nobley puts these guys in their place (the whole a woman can be a strong independent single mother and/or crashing at a friends' house without men and not be "gay" or something)...even though they're actually not lesbians or anything, and in the process Gaeta reveals that he himself is gay or something. I dunno. A variation of that might be nice. Then all three characters are good friends who stick up for each other.
- One of the big points the show made at its outset was to have strong female characters, and on top of this, strong secondary characters. It has reached the point where, without our realizing it, Cally has become purely defined by Chief Tyrol. Her relationship with a man defines her. And yes, he is her husband that she loves. And yes, Motherhood is a GOOD thing to be defined by, but she needs to have FRIENDSHIPS with other characters, otherwise she'll just be window dressing for Tyrol
So what are YOUR wishlists for things Cally should do?
courtney - April 14, 2007 06:20 PM (GMT)
About Chief , I dont think he is a cylon. Im hoping he is one of the priests. I do agree, and think for season 4 we should find out the characters background. Like where they came from sagiatrion etc. i don't think they have really told us that about Chief, Cally , Helo etc.
I kindof wish they would have done an episode where it showed Cally and Chief getting married/ or a an ep where he realized he wanted to be with here/ start a life for her. As long as Chief does not turn out to be a clyon and he and cally stay together I'll be happy :)

I'm sorry Courney but the writers have made it really clear "we aren't fooling around, this isn't a trick, they are really the Final Five Cylons"....of course, that means something *fundamentally different* from regular Cylons....my guess is that what with the Cycle of Time, humans/Cylons/humans/Cylons, the "Final Five" are actually the CYlons from the last "cycle" and have been around for thousands of years. That said, they obviously didn't think of this when the series began and have admitted this. We shall see.
At any rate,

At any rate, YEAH, I am really annoyed that pretty much all of Chief/Cally happened OFF SCREEN; we've got ONE scene in Lay Down Your Burdens II which was cut for time with her trying to drink while her jaw is wired shut and they have their first kiss; have you seen that?
Even so, we missed out on their wedding and all sorts of stuff.
They've established some backstory for Chief but with the new Final Five Cylon revelation, we don't know how much is true.
I honestly know nothing about Helo, other than that he went to the academy with Starbuck.
Cally, we know next to nothing. If they really care about the secondary characters they should flesh them out and give them backstory.
Meanwhile....I think I've touched on an issue here: should Cally be separated from Tyrol?
I mean even if she still loves him; it might not be her decision.
I mean just in terms of giving the character something to do, it would be a boost.
Knaves - April 15, 2007 05:06 AM (GMT)
Now for my little bit, I want to see Cally rocking out on stage as Nicki does in the Laws Have Changed video (yea I know it sounds stupid).
I also agree with V, Cally should be Chief of the Deck as she essentially was in the last episode if only temporarily. I also like seeing her on 'away teams' but the marraige and child might limit that.
The fleet has to be breaking apart by now, I mean the actual ships themselves. You can only keep ships functioning on their own for so long, so perhaps possibly an episode of trying to get a broken ship running again before the baddies blow them to kingdom come. Kinda in the same theme as 33, a simple but effective plot.
So does the last episode make Bob Dylan the cylon god and Jimmy Hendrix his prophet? (I do love that song though)
V - April 15, 2007 08:56 AM (GMT)
Re; the song: Bob Dylan wrote "All Along the Watchtower" first, Jimi Hendrix just did the most famous rendition of it. According to Bear McCreary, the idea is not that it's a song FROM Earth (they made it a point that they could have used the Dylan version, but DIDN"T, and instead recorded their own for the show) they're just both stemming from the same cosmic theme; along the lines of "how can they be speaking English and wearing contemporary western clothing?" (the mystery of how their culture is so parallel to our own) So I don't really see how Hendrix fits into that; well Ron explains this on the podcasts pretty well.

Broken ship running might be good.....but what I'd like is....say.....they realize that a ship cannot be fixed and they send mechanic teams over to basically scrap it for all usable parts that they can remove and use to fix other ships.
I mean, Cally admittedly doesn't go on "away teams" much, but you will recall the Bastill Day DVD commentary: they basically said that the format of the show is that they almost never find an inhabitable planet; this is a rare, rare thing: Kobol was habitable because it was the mother-planet. New Caprica was barely habitable and treated as a rare occurrance.
The "Planet of the Week" format has been done to death. So they said they'd have a "ship of the week" format instead; each week going out to ships in the civilian fleet. The living embodiment of this is "Bastille Day" and the prison ship riot. This is what a "normal day" in the Fleet is basically like; this is the type of thing happening "off screen" most days; the idea is, however, that they blew ALL of the money they set aside for new sets on the prison ship set, so they said they wouldn't even try to do "ship of the week" episodes in the future (yeah, I know, Black Market, Dirty Hands, etc....still, they do it VERY rarely)
************At any rate, in the one "ship of the week" episode they did, they had Cally randomly picked to go on an "away team" mission because she knew what type of mechanical stuff they'd be doing.
Well....I would imagine that the show is starting to get a bit "tight" now; even if there is a 5th Season, I don't know how many more "Standalone" episodes they can have.
Still, the writers are smart, and when they actually have the time to sit down and think about it, they do go "wow, we underused that character, we should work them in later"....the thing I keep pointing back to is that they realized Tigh was underused in season 2.5 so they made it a point to give him more to do later. Given how much RDM likes Cally, I seriously hope they fix her up in season 4; by which I mean, simply PLAN OUT something for her character to *do*.
I mean in the grand scheme of things....did it really MATTER that Cally got decompression sicknes from being blasted out an airlock? She was walking with a cane by next episode but it didn't affect the plot, and she was fine by the next.

I'm telling you: best possible situation *I* can think of (which probably isn't the best overall) is: Something "happens" to Tyrol (Cylons grab him or something) and he isn't around and cannot be with Cally or serve on the flight deck.
To avoid having Cally seem bitchy or like a backstabber, she obviously has conflicting emotions about Chief as a Cylon, but she doesn't firmly take a "I hate this" stance; she will be like Helo was in Res Ship I, remember that? Realizing she "Cannot stop loving him" but "this is weird and I don't know what to think"
Anyway, have her like move in with Seelix or something (I think Seelix is her friend after she saved her life) in order to help raise Nicky: this gives her another character to interact with.
Again, because Chief Tyrol isn't around, make Cally the Deck Chief. Of course, maybe Laird should pop up or something....but he's a civilian masquerading as a Deck Chief while Cally has actually been in the military for a while. Maybe he could be HER new "helper". Dunno. Maybe not.
Anyway, this solves the problems of: 1-In season 3 Cally was too dependent on Chief and not a separate character (she has always been "his helper" but she barely TALKED to other people) 2-DO NOT make Cally categorically hate Chief and Nicky due to the fact that she REALLY hates Cylons 3-give Cally more to do and increase her in rank
Alright, to be honest....would making Cally the deck chief make SENSE? I like to think it would....but there are so many other deck crew....then again there is the whole "well, I've been doing it for like 4 years now and I was Chief's right hand"
If Kat can become Galactica top gun over Starbuck, Cally can get somewhere:
****I do have "did Cally officially get promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class?" on my "list of questions for the writers" on my encyclopedia but it may be weeks before I get answers (sigh)--->(Cally is wearing Petty Officer, 2nd Class rank insignia in Unfinished Business flashbacks but I do not know if it was official or if it was a mistake)

I would like to see more of Cally away from the flightline and work. We have seen the Adamas in casual conversations in their quarters and dialogs in the gym and stuff. We also see Tyrol conversing at the bar. Something along the lines of Dee and Billy's scene when they were in the observation deck would be nice. I would also like to see more of Cally's background, and maybe blend it in with Colonial culture.

Yeah when you think about it, she's really never done much of anything off of the hangardeck5, and when she does, it is GREAT:
Litmus she was in the tribunal thing
Kobol arc she was fighting and stuff
Resistance also great
Arguably she was "not just on the hangar deck" in Dirty Hands and Day In The Life, but it was nothing that couldn't have been just a conversation on the flight deck.
Again, she needs more stuff with relationships with other people and less being defined as "a mechanic"
ENS Whitaker - April 28, 2007 04:26 AM (GMT)
When I 1st watch Cally she reminded me of my girlfriend who went off to the army. That was then now she become a woman, a wife, a mom and its changed her.
When she and Tyrol almost died when they were trapped in the cargo bay and she tells Adama to make sure her child gets a good place to live. that kind of scenes and episodes I would like to see Nicki do more often.

My wish would be for that spin off EJO talked about. "Cally and the Commander!" :P
I honestly dont see them "fixing" Cally in the fourth season. Well I honestly didnt think she was "broke". I just would have prefered more screen time.
I can honestly say I wish her a new TV series too.
V - May 1, 2007 04:23 PM (GMT)
When did he mention "Cally and the Commander"?
Okay I don't want to use the past tense "Cally WAS a dream of making a minor character bigger" she IS, but....
....well they're not going to "Fix" her in season 4.
She's good to begin with though.
I just want her to get ACTUAL SCREENTIME.
It's just that season 3 was supposed to be the "meat grinder" killing off a lot of characters, instead only 3 died, and the result was that the surviving 2 dozen characters could not fit onto the screen at the same time.
She's talented, she's young, and she has BSG on her resume; this website might be a little dry for a few months until BSG season 4, but Nicki is looking out for her career and I seriously think she'll get parts on something else.
I mean I've rewatched her old Dark Angel stuff and things, she'll be alright.
Solium - May 1, 2007 11:21 PM (GMT)
Geez, I wish I remember when I heard EJO say he liked the idea of a spin off called, Cally and the Commander. But he did. It might have been a printed interview or on one of those Sci Fi Low Down Specials they used to produce...
V - May 2, 2007 06:40 AM (GMT)
Okay, like I was saying in the other thread: instead of gaining in popularity, BSG Season 3 lost a lot of viewers and on top of this the quality dropped a bit, though I think they can fix it.
I mean the "glory days" of Season 2.0 are gone, where it actually MEANT something to obsessively know who all of the minor guest characters were with encyclopedic detail! :)
Because minor characters like Cally, Racetrack, or Seelix had the potential to and often did turn into recurring characters.
I think we're really past the point where we can go "wow, I like that minor guest character!" and then they do something.
***Well, it is better to mentally prepare ourselves for the end of BSG now instead of later. Though I DO hope we get an announcement of a 5th season before summer ends (they'll know when they're writing it)
Anyway, what will become of the "Nicki Clyne fansite"? I mean how long will ANY fansite keep going?
I'm feeling wacky because I'm graduating college, but I mean what will happen to GalacticaStation or HangarDeck5 in 7 years? I don't think they'll be around that long.
I mean the LONGEST running Trek boards I go to started in like 1999.
***sigh*** I think the problem is just that I'll miss everyone online. In all past fandoms I've been in....they were just random screenames. I didn't really "know" people like we have on BSG here.
Well, I'll chat more about this later, but to make a long story short, you ARE busy now Solium but you're going to keep our little corner of the internet going through season 4?
*laughing* in hindsight, in all seriousness there didn't NEED to be a Cally fansite, it started out as just a fun joke thing to do because we really liked her and it would more properly be a subforum on a larger site.
****The thing is.....well, with "Lord of the RIngs" for example, there is one big fansite everyone goes to; Theonering.net That's THE biggest forums.
But BSG has no one central fan forum. We all kind of drifted as a result, once Scifi.com ran into problems.
*********The 3rd Annual Golden Toster Fan Awards are starting up soon. I hope that we can use this to contact every fansite IN EXISTENCE and thus get an accurate "census" of "who's left"
And it will be really sad when the series ends: I think that even if I get back onto Scifi.com I will abandon it when the series ends (they're an abusive channel and an abusive site and aren't rally "hip" "edgy" or "with it" by any measure).....and.....I don't really know......Solium, what are the "major fan messageboards" nowadays?
Everything seemed to be going so well, SO WELL during the 2nd Golden Toaster Awards. That was just a happy time. I think we can all when we're annoyed at current cruddy TV shows close our eyes and think back to the fun we had setting those up. I hope the 3rd GTA's will be just as good, but to be honest we physically have less people doing it this year. Dunno.
***Well anyway, the hope is that Nicki will get another, and bigger, role on something else once BSG ends.
And I ask myself, will I be coming HERE in 10 years? I don't think so; it's nice but I don't want to be DEFINED by it. Back in season 2 it seemed like BSG (and the Cally goodness therein) would never end.
And I'm not saying it's being forced to end: RDM said that they wanted to end it with at most 5 seasons. This is how long TV shows live.
I think the problem was that I moved to a college that had NO social scene whatsoever, and I formed "online friendships" over BSG instead (seriously, if everyone was physically in the same place I'd be doing the same stuff as now, just in the real world)
I mean just, haha, did knowing who the minor guest characters were in a random BSG episode give my life meaning? Was I studying for "the test" on all of this or something? :rofl2:
No.
Well, I hope they DO announce a 5th season. But we dunno. I'll enjoy it nonetheless. I think I just need to find a better real-life scifi club :)
Solium - May 3, 2007 11:03 AM (GMT)
V, where will we be in 10 years? I don't know. BSG can possibly live on with spin-offs, and feature films. I do not know if BSG has the marketing power and fan support of Star Trek or Star Wars. Yes, first thing we have to remember is that BSG is a science fiction television series no matter how hard it tries not to be one. It will live or die based on niche fan support. Universal will not dump the property if they can continue to make money from it.
So its possible Cally will live on..... along with the rest of the cast and characters. So, this board along with other BSG boards may remain in existence as long as the property exists in some format.
This board was created for the following reasons:
(1) I wanted a fun, supportive place for Nicki Clyne fans to chat, where trolls and Nicki/Cally bashers are not allowed. (Thats what Sci Fi board is for I guess)
(2) I believed building a fan board for Nicki would give her and others a place to honestly gauge her popularity and fan support.
(3) I believed building this board would build fan support for Nicki and for Cally.
(4) I believed, "if you build it, they will come". We have A LOT of members for a small board about a minor character on a cable television series.
(5) I believe a lot of Nicki/Cally fans don't read the Sci Fi boards, but would find this board from Googling if I built it.
What will Nicki be doing in a couple of years? Will she be able to create an iconic character so loved ( and hated) as Cally a second time around? Will she be acting in the future. I don't know.
But in case her career takes off, (regardless of the character or roll) we are prepared, and have I believe the most official unofficial fan board for Nicki Clyne fans!
Watch and see this board take off if Nicki's career takes off. And that was the purpose of this board. Provide a friendly positive environment for Nicki Clyne fans.

Yeah I do feel better like, rewatching Kobol Arc episodes and going, "Wow, summer 2005 was really a fun time when episodes like this were coming out", and YES, Nicki is an actress and will be in something else (hopefully, genre but there are many genre shows in Vancouver)
***I have, of course, added links surreptitiously to Nicki Clyne fansite wherever possible (Galacitca.tv, Scifipedia, etc. etc.) :naughty:
You know the writers are good guys, I just hope they really have a plan for everything. ***THen again, the best episodes are always those at the beginning of each season, when they get to focus hiatus time on stuff.
Cally needs to: 1-get a smidgen of backstory so she has actual depth 2-get the fun one-liner moments again and 3-do something....unexpected. Remember when unexpected moments were the norm in seasons 1 and 2?

That would be a show worth watching!

Grace Park has complained about that too: as soon as the character became a mother, they stopped giving Athena "sexy" scene to do once she was married.

I wonder if Nicki wants "sexier" material?

Give Cally command of the Galactica! lol.

or at least full command of the deck during a battle.

For that to happen she would have to be the only one on the ship or the ONLY CDF crewman left! :friends:
Not thats its impossible, they been alot of Trek epsiodes where the Doctor was left by themselves on board the ships and she could have a dream where she alone?
I Think the one episode comes to mind is TNG one where the female doc was the only one on board and everyone else was disappearing. :dancingbunny:

That would be a interesting episode, maybe Tyrol calls in sick (bear with me here) or injured in some event and she is given command until he can return. Place her through a couple of toaster attacks to put her to the test. That would be a great episode to watch. Good idea Knaves!

Okay, so Cally specifically:
Things I've actually wanted for a long time since before season 3, since Season 2.0 actually (they didn't really use Cally in Season 2.5):
So things I'd really like to see are: - Give Cally physically more screentime.
My 1 and only:
- Cally to Not die and make it to the end
That'd be fine with me, I've heard rumors going around that shes gonna buy the farm this time. But, they said that in Season 2...
ENS Whitaker - January 3, 2008 02:56 AM (GMT)
My wish for the new season is that Cally will have alot to do.
I do hope that she NOT going to die before the end of the series. That could happen :( Who knows what the POWERS THAT BE have in store for the cast!
More on her past. That would be interesting.
CptKayleeAdama - February 7, 2008 05:53 AM (GMT)
The rumors about her dying are still going strong :(
My only S4 Wish:
She survives till the end.
M-E - February 7, 2008 07:23 AM (GMT)
I hope Cally is one of the survivors at the end of the season because I like the character very much... :)
But I also hope to learn more about the Cylons, why they exactly attacked again the humans, who's the last of the 12 'human models' and so on...
Solium - February 10, 2008 11:56 PM (GMT)
I was talking about this with Lex. I was trying to gather evidence and construct clues regarding the fate of Cally.
We do know Nicki lives in New York City now. Thats far from Vancouver! (and they have the whole second half of the final season to film.)
Nicki's hair style has changed a bit, but not so much she can't be spruced up with those famous Cally bangs.
On the other hand, if you listen to her interview from Australia she said one never knows if there might be a movie or new telefilm after the series ends its run. (in regards of seeing more Cally) That would suggest she doesn't die. On the other hand, if she did die they could always do a new story in between season one and four like they did with Razor.
ENS Whitaker - February 11, 2008 12:11 AM (GMT)
I guessing with her move to the states she looking for work here.
I too would like to see a movie after the series ends. Whatever Happens I do hope Cally survives

I have some very, very scary/bad+ anything you can think of, News.
This could be "spoilers" so don't read if you're one of those:
"According to Michael Taylor, in this episode "we say goodbye to another longtime character, though who that is and the manner of his or her departure should come as a surprise."[1]
Spoiler follows, highlight to read: According to an unconfirmed source at the Patriot Resource - as well as an interview Aaron Douglas gave at Dragoncon (where he repeatedly proclaimed the words "Dead Cally, Dead Cally, Dead Cally") - Cally commits suicide in this episode. It is unknown if the Chief's true (Cylon) identity is the reason for her decision to take her life."
