Somehow - St Louis - mp3
loripjb - September 20, 2007 11:46 AM (GMT)
This is a wonderful idea!!
Thanks to whoever thought it up :hearts (Evancol and Gypsee)
"Somehow" is one of my favorite songs. The lyrics are amazing and haunting at the same time.
My favorite of these three I would have to say is St. Louis...I'm not sure why, but it stands out to me!!

This song just rips me....the lyrics and melody are haunting. I am not quite sure what it is aboutt his song that gets to me so much...the sadness reflected in it, the soulful melody, Tay's voice....I just know I love it!
I have not ever seen this performed, so I don't have a favorite real venue. I am hoping one day to hear this live.
sendmetay - September 20, 2007 01:30 PM (GMT)
Help...I cannot view the videos....all I see is a little red x in the upper left hand corner..... :computer
Gypsee - September 20, 2007 01:34 PM (GMT)
Sendmetay, what browser are you using?
sendmetay - September 20, 2007 01:36 PM (GMT)
Internet Explorer...I usually do not have problems...
sendmetay - September 20, 2007 01:48 PM (GMT)
Gypsee....they are working now.....something about Windows media playing asking to run Active X control...when I clicked on it, my computer shut down and rebooted and now I am fine.... ...thanks, Gypsee...

Dream of Jeannie - September 20, 2007 02:16 PM (GMT)
I'm having the same problem. I clicked on active X and I'm still here. I'll reboot and see if that helps. I'm also using Explorer.
Gypsee - September 20, 2007 02:37 PM (GMT)
IE should work with this, as well as FireFox. It is usually something in your media player. Sometimes I have to reinstall the entire player...GRRR!
Dream of Jeannie - September 20, 2007 03:04 PM (GMT)
Thanks, Gypsee, I'll work on it later. Gotta run some errands but I'll try reinstalling my media player.
Have a wonderful day!
grandma carol - September 20, 2007 03:25 PM (GMT)
Fantastic!!!! He can REALLY get into this song, one of my very favorites! Thanx for sharing :cheer :guitar
Gypsee - September 20, 2007 03:28 PM (GMT)
Which of the three venue performances does everyone prefer and why? :)
grandma carol - September 20, 2007 03:51 PM (GMT)
Dang, now I am forced to go watch them again to form an opinion!!!! :Yay!
Dream of Jeannie - September 20, 2007 04:11 PM (GMT)
Gah!! Don't make me pick just one! I like the joking with the audience in the Norfolk performance, and I like the tempo of the Charleston performance, but I also like the St. Louis one because it's closer to the original.
Did that make any sense?
grandma carol - September 20, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
I enjoyed, really enjoyed all 3 but I have to say St. Louis was more to the original recording which I play over and over, surprised I haven't worn out my CD. I like the joking with the audience in Charleston , heck all 3 are great. I can't just pick one.
carmay7 - September 20, 2007 07:24 PM (GMT)
Definitely St. Louis. Vocals were great. :thud

Oh Gypsee....I sure like this "homework".
Thanks Evencol for your media help.
"Somehow" is for sure one of my favorites.
I agree that "haunting" is a word that relates to this song.
Now as to which vid version is my favorite.....I guess St. Louis. Because it is the version that I see my sweetheart and me slow dancing to.
Cause if we were on American Bandstand back when I was a teen and we were rating this song...how easy it is to dance would be one of the things we would need to score. *smile*
But anytime and anyway that sweet boy sings this song is 'alright with me'. Even if he was 35 when he wrote it.

:) Thanks so much for these videos, evancol and Gypsee!! Enjoyed them all ... but, if I had to choose one, I would select St. Louis. As others have already said, it is closer to the original (which I love!); and I was moved by Taylor's passion and flawless vocals in this performance. :lilheart
Gypsee - September 21, 2007 01:05 AM (GMT)
It seems like St Louis wins hands down...that's my choice too. Definitely close to what I heard on In Your Time.
mouser - September 21, 2007 06:15 PM (GMT)
Charleston Vid:
Faster paced, more updated rhythm with some different inflections and phrasing.
Norfolk Vid :
More clipped, punctuated performance
St. Louis Vid :
Almost speaks the song with real weariness in his voice.
I think it depends on the listeners mood as to which one has the best appeal.
If your a romantic and a mellow fellow than St. Louis is your favorite; if you are in a good mood and have an optimistic outlook on everything than Norfolk might be your favorite; if you are in that in between stage when listening to this song, neither morose or ebullient than perhaps, Charleston is your "cup of tea".
I like all three but probably prefer Norfolk today , who knows about tomorrow. That is one of the joys of listening to Taylor perform: the variations . LOVE THEM.
I like this song better than I did originally, but unlike most people , it is not my favorite of Taylor's original works.
laurensilk - September 21, 2007 06:33 PM (GMT)
You want us to PICK ONE????? My achin' head! "Somehow" is my favorite of everything he has done. I guess I'd have to go with the Charleston version because it's the closest to the original and the sax just rips at your soul. The ending has that deep, poingnant aching quality to it.
janibeth - September 21, 2007 06:49 PM (GMT)
Ok...watched all 3 and I'm thinking I'll go with St Louis. It just seems to be a more "soulful" performance.
One comment I'd like to make about all 3 performances. Just after the saxaphone solo, Taylor usually throws in a little speeded up section of the song. Usually I find no fault with his performances, but that speeded up part seems a little jarring to me. It's such a beautiful song and I prefer the whole thing to be slow. Anyone else agree with that?
spanishfan - September 21, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
Try as I might, I just cannot get to hear them. Only a bit of St Louis and then it is so shaky. I also am on internet and usually have no problem.
Gypsee - September 21, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
Jani, I am with you. I am so always swept away by the raw emotion in this song and its lyrics and melody, that I prefer the melancholy slow beauty of it all the way thru.
cydter - September 21, 2007 07:30 PM (GMT)
I have to go with St.Louis.
This is one of my favorite
Taylor originals.
Now can we all say
"Release New Version"!!!
Samz - September 21, 2007 09:26 PM (GMT)
The first time I ever heard this song, I was driving around in my car, running errands and listening to Taylor's CD. When this song came on, I was just pulling up beside my son's grave, to put out fresh flowers. I just sat in my car and wept, listening to this song over and over. It was as if Taylor was singing the pain in my heart. Since then, it has always been special to me. I have never had the pleasure of hearing him sing this live. I hope one day to hear him perform this song, and "Limin'", another favorite.
I won't even try to chose a favorite venue from the videos above, because I wasn't there to experience the magic, firsthand. I love them all, and I love Taylor's ability to change up his song (or any song) and make it sound completely different. That man is truly amazing!
Great idea for a thread, Gypsee and Evancol. Looking forward to seeing some video, I may have missed. Thanks!
lah - September 21, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
This is still my all-time favorite Taylor song and the one I'm still hoping to experience live. I wasn't fortunate enough to hear it at any of the shows I attended this spring or summer. Of these three I also like the St. Louis version the best, as it's closest to the original. I still haven't decided how I feel about the jazzed up section towards the end. I think it takes away from some of the emotion and powerful impact of the song; so while I like the Norfolk version too, it's a little too "jazzy". The Charleston one was hard for me to listen to because there was so much crowd chatter; and since I want so badly to hear this song live and have never gotten the opportunity, it made me feel like the audience just didn't appreciate what he was singing. An acoustic tour version of this song, back to sounding more like the original, would be the ultimate.
mouser - September 21, 2007 11:23 PM (GMT)
Everyone who has responded to "Somehow" seems to love it and love the message as well as the way the messanger tells his story. I , too , like this song, (see my initial review above ) but I just am not one to wallow in melancoly ..... when "Somehow" is done with a little bit of jazzy upbeat or change of rhythm, I am more inclined to like it ............the same tone, same vocal range and same sense of dispair regardless of how heartfelt , is not my favorite . There are acoustic, slow, gut wretching songs that he sings that really grab me, but "Somehow" is not one of them. And for the record, I have seen it live twice.
Like it very, very much....... but again, it is not a favorite of mine. I think I am the only Soul Patroller that feels this way.......??? But then , for the record, I am one of the 3 living people who liked "Possibilities" and the Ford Commerical !!! So perhaps, I have no credibility !!!!!
Gypsee - September 21, 2007 11:50 PM (GMT)
LOL mouser! You have as much credibility as any other fan...that's why we have this thread :)

All the video's are running at the same time, and I can't shut them off to look at them one at a time....
any hint of what I can do? This is really weird they play a little bit and then stop and then play a bit and all of them running at the same time.....HELP!
For some reason Mac just doesn't work Gypsee on your site... I have been here since Sept of o6 with only 5 post. Just read along most of the time, but would like to join in on this topic. Anyone there with a mac?
anchovy - September 22, 2007 01:18 AM (GMT)
I've loved this song since I 1st heard it months ago. The more sorrowful he sings it the better I like it.
chewsday - September 22, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
samz: Some things just happen and some things happen for a reason. I think the latter is true of your Somehow experience.
When I first really listened to the song, I found myself crying at the heartache in Taylor's voice. I hadn't cried over a song in a long time - and it felt good to be drawn into the emotion of it.
My vote goes to the St. Louis version. It seems closest to the original which, in my opinion, is about as good as it gets.
Cenerue - September 22, 2007 01:39 AM (GMT)
I'm finding it very hard to pick just one but I sure enjoyed all 3 videos- thanks!

MNSue - September 22, 2007 03:39 AM (GMT)
Put me down for the St. Louis version, as well. The words and melody of "Somehow" beg to be caressed. It deserves to be sung thoughtfully. I feel the jazzy, chewy treatment is a reflection on Taylor being in a different place professionally than when it was first recorded. Less of a need to yearn for audience respect. Give it to us any way you want, Taylor. We can take it.
jcinshanssoul - September 22, 2007 03:48 AM (GMT)
Evancol...if I could get some help too, that would be awesome!! They all pop up in Quicktime and start playing at once. I can stop em but I just don't know which video is which... ;)
marciab - September 22, 2007 04:16 AM (GMT)
I love Taylor's soulful voice in the St. Louis video. Like everyone said, it's closer to the original.
However, The Norfolk version was fascinating. Loved the interaction with the crowd. This performance also reminded me of Elvis. His mannerisms and interactions with the band reminded me of when I saw Elvis (3 times) in concert. Taylor is definitely original; however I do see alot of other great artists in some of his songs and performances.

OK....hopefully something here will help someone.
