Tupelo Sendspace

Niagra Falls Sendspace

Orlando Sendspace

Gypsee - September 28, 2007 11:57 PM (GMT)
Woohoo..another fav! Thanks, Evancol! I think I have to go with Orlando this time. I like this song better without the full tour band and I like that Taylor seemed relaxed and having fun with this song there. I also think I am liking him better without the jacket in concert because it seems to free his movements a bit more. I do love all thre tho, because this song is so excellent, it's hard not to do it well.

PayTheDevil - September 29, 2007 08:10 AM (GMT)
Personally, I prefer the version from Asheville, NC.

It's just a matter of taste. Sound quality is the most important element to me.

"Soul Thing" - Asheville, NC

Gypsee - September 29, 2007 01:57 PM (GMT)
Thanks Pay :) We didn't offer that one, because I don't think I have that version on our server. To me, this is one of the best original songs Taylor has in any version. I think the further he gets into a tour, the more relaxed he comes across at the shows.

loripjb - September 29, 2007 03:33 PM (GMT)
This song was actually the first song I heard of his originals. Absolutely LOVED it!!!

Out of the three I would say Orlando is my favorite. He seemed to be having such a GREAT time during that show!!!

To hear him sing it live though is amazing. He sang it at a few of the shows I was at..and it really gets up and dancing!!

Unlike with "Somehow", I do not have a clear favorite. Having witnessed the Orlando performance first hand, I want to say that is my favorite because the overall quality of this show was so high, but I have to say that all three had something different to offer me.

In ORLANDO , he was playful, almost childish during many of the songs sung. His interplay with the band and with the technicians back stage ( if you notice he looks several times to his left and laughs, this is where two techs were sitting manning some equipment ) showed his enjoyment at being on stage. While this performance was high energy and fast paced, Taylor's body was slouched throughout the performance and he could not keep still. When actually watching this live, it was fabulous; when watching it in replay, I became a little bit dizzy watching him. His vocals were "right on "

NIAGRA FALLS was an instrumental delight. This was a bouncy rendition with both Soul Thing and Eastbound and Down done skillfully and jubilantly .

TUPELO for me was the best arrangement of Soul Thing . There was more of the original instrumentation ( but not as powerful as the touring band ) I loved the multiple tempo and style changes , the "sweet wine on the vine" and the ending was pure genius...... It was unfortunate that the video got bleeped and the flow of the song was interrupted. As much as I like LMBO, I am not sure; other than Brian Less, that they are as accomplished on their instruments as the touring band. I am certainly not a critic nor do I have a particularily decerning ear, so this comment is just my impression.

ASHVILLE was the most sophisticated one in my mind. Taylor's body language was balanced and his usual swagger was more suave. I can do without the multiple Ray Charles tilts ; however.

Gr8fulheart - September 29, 2007 09:44 PM (GMT)
Now to Try to remember everything!
One thing I've learned to expect from Taylor is; to 'expect the unexpected'! It seems like he & his band members are the only one's who know for sure what is going to happen! This is Good! ~ "The element of Surprise'!

I agree with 'ditching the jacket'. It frees Taylor up to move more freely & who doesn't want to see that! Even though he wore the jacket in Tupelo, he 'Worked It Out' & obviously had Fun!

My favorite is Orlando. The whole performance is top-notch! I Love the way he & Josh have 'conversations' with the mouth harp & guitar. I get awe struck watching them.

Niagra Falls: I Love the 'Bluezy Bops' & find myself wanting to do the same thing!

I know Ashville is not included, but that performance had the best acoustical tones. It was almost as if I was standing in the room. I could also do without so many of the Ray Charles tilts. Maybe Taylor believes the fans have become to 'expect' that from him? We know Taylor has the greatest admiration for Ray Charles, but we want Taylor to be Taylor.

BTW ~ After waiting for about (10) minutes, the Tupelo video began playing & played through just fine. Same thing with Orlando, however; when Niagra Falls began, there was hesitations all the way through.

I'm gonna slide back in here for a minute. After seeing Gypsee's post, I realize I forgot to say "Thank You" to Pay for bringing that performance to us! So ~ a BIG 'THANK YOU' to Pay! Goofed Again

Gypsee - September 29, 2007 10:01 PM (GMT)
I agree, Ashville has a terrific sound and thanks to Pay for bringing that one here as well.

tishlp - September 29, 2007 10:54 PM (GMT)
It's hard to choose, but I like Orlando the best. To me there is nothing better than hearing Taylor play his own original on the harp. And that duel with Josh always gets my vote.

Tupelo was a close second because he was having so much fun. I realize the bass was so loud because the person filming was in front of the speakers, and I certainly can't fault that, you don't usually get to choose where you stand, but I wonder how it would compare with out the loud bass. Plus, the guitarist wasn't Sam Gunderson, it was Wynn Christian, so they probably weren't playing as tightly as they do when Sam is there.

All in all it was a very pleasant to review all the versions, including the one from Asheville, thanks PTD. :)

SOUL THING

This is a more difficult choice. I believe I will have to come back later with my pick.

However, there are two things that were stunning to me after watching these.

One is the amazing mixing it up with every performance. We have always known that each show is different. Watching three or four renditions of the same song really makes this clear. There is NO similar performance by Taylor. There is NO falling into a rut and sounding like yesterday’s song--a different tag, interaction with the audience, playing with the band, change up rhythm,"famous" dance moves, or just a “let’s get on some serious music here” attitude! There can always be a surprise in the next note or move!

It is great justification for seeing 50 concerts…they will all be fresh and new!!

Second, the musical relationship he has created with the tour band is always front and center. Man, it works! The instrumental solos are always interesting and leave you wanting more. It makes you wonder about an instrumental concert!? It is hard to beat Taylor on harmonica with Josh on guitar or Loren on keys for musical fireworks. Taylor and his tour band look like one big party of guys having a whole lot of fun!! They SOUND like an exceptional group of musicians who are more than talented—they give it their all EVERY time they take the stage. Orlando gets a vote for that!

Now, that takes nothing away from LiMBO! Taylor’s long relationship with them comes out in a relaxed, fun performance. Jeff Lopez is always a star on the sax. Tupelo gets a vote for fun, fun!

Still can't decide!

LindaInIowa - September 30, 2007 01:27 PM (GMT)
Well, I would like to join in here but it just isn't working on my "puter.
I am using both Firefox and IE, clicking the vids does nothing!

I have most of these vids except the Orlando version of Soul Thing. Couldn't locate it here on TMO or at Youtube.

Will you be providing sendspace links?

Gypsee - September 30, 2007 02:04 PM (GMT)
Hi Linda....yes Evancol will put the sendspace links here, but all of these came from our server, and it may have been on one of the earlier or later pages. Let me see if I can locate it on the server for you to d/l, until we get the sendspace links

***ETA***

OK the Orlando clip can be found on Summer Tour Pg2, and it's the last selection in the Orlando list..."SoulThing"_byMissy1027. Hope that helps!

lah - September 30, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)
This one's a little harder for me because, I hesitate to say, although it's one of his originals and one of his favorites, I'm not a big fan of Soul Thing. However, that said, I really like the Tupelo version because I do like this song live when he adds in the tags, and I love the tags in Tupelo.

I also did enjoy the Orlando version because he seemed to be having a really good time on stage and appeared very relaxed. It was fun to watch. Of course the Tay/Josh part was fantastic.

Someone mentioned how different every performance is, and I agree, that's what makes his shows so great and every song, whether I like it or not, fun to watch, because you just don't know what you're going to get. When I went to see him at the Denver show, a friend at work had just gone to see Bob Seger. He told me if you go on line, you can get his set list (ha, little did he know) and know what is coming next. He said how he had done that for Seger and was telling everyone he was sitting around what would be the next song and when the break was and had the whole run-down of the concert right on, even what he'd say to the audience. I tried to explain to him that that wouldn't work for Taylor because every show and set list is different. I don't think he quite understood or believed me because I guess most artists put on the exact same show, right down to the banter, night after night. That's one of the things that makes Taylor so special and why I can completely enjoy a song I don't particulary even like and why so many can go to multiple shows and have a completely different concert experience each time.

juliegr - September 30, 2007 03:20 PM (GMT)
Thanks to Pay for bringing another choice to review -- however, I must give it more thought now before casting my vote!! hah

They are all high energy, passionate, "my story" type of videos.

Back with a final vote after thinking on it.

Thanks Gypsee and Evancol. Good work.

Thank you Gypsee!
I was looking in the Spring Tour section, not the summer, forgot that he appeared in Orlando twice this year.

Got it now!

san - October 1, 2007 01:43 AM (GMT)
This is still a tough choice…the four performances are really different.

Tupelo was still the most fun…you knew people were enjoying the Elvis Festival. I like Taylor in a jacket; however, I have to agree that losing it is probably good for summer concerts—I always feel bad that a nice jacket is getting SO messed up. If it had been possible to get a really good closeup video of this performance, I think the facial expressions would have been priceless! But then, they always are! The tags were fun too—I loved wine on the vine.

Niagara was my least favorite although I liked the original sound of this Soul Thing. The ending was a new twist.

Thanks PTD for the Ashville version. This was exceptional quality and a pleasure to watch. It seemed evident from his clothes that this was probably the opening song. I had the feeling that he just wasn’t quite “wound up” yet, for HIM. I think he comes on the stage wound up, but continues to intensify as a concert progresses, as he says, feeding on the energy from the audience. I loved the jacket and t-shirt!

I have to pick Orlando as my favorite, even though I missed the tags. It seemed that everyone was right on, working it all out together! Felix was back on drums. It is hard to top Taylor and Josh on dueling harp and guitar...and Taylor obviously enjoys it. I liked the original feel to the performance...I am one who prefers many of the original versions of Taylor music on Under The Radar such as The Deal and Hell of a Day. There was friendly interaction with the audience at the end and he even accepted roses!

edjorg - October 1, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)
I can't get them to play on my computer either. I'll have to try the sendspace links later. Meanwhile, to add to the collection, here is my video of the version he did on Saturday night at the Big E. I offer it for sentimental value, since he had Felix open it with a drum solo and it appears to be Felix's last performance with the band, at least in the near future.

Thank you, EJ! I will also add this to the TMO server :)

mouser - October 1, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
Thank you edjorg for sharing the Big E version of Soul Thing.

I still like the Tupelo arrangement best, but I loved the intro at The Big E with Felix on the drums ( should have used that before )and I loved Loren's keyboard on Eastbound and Down.

THAT FERRIS WHEEL IS AWESOME: Like a wreath , a halo, a shining light encircling Taylor and the Band. Taylor resembled a "Tilt-a-Whirl" which was very appropriate for a State Fair; he was having such fun.

I really enjoyed the Orlando
performance. I was lucky enough
to experience it live and it
was one of the best.
The look on his face in the
guitar solo is priceless.
It almost lets you know
how that band came together
so well.

Orlando gets my vote!!!

Gypsee - October 3, 2007 12:08 AM (GMT)
Ter....you lucky thing to have been there for that! What a great song this is :)

medolark - October 3, 2007 11:42 PM (GMT)
If I had to choose between the 3 at the top I would choose Orlando. I like the harp. But the Big E performance is great. I've always been partial to the UTR version. The background instrumentals are fantastic and you feel the contrasts in it ain't no groove thing, it ain't no country twang, it's a soul thing. Then the bluesy part when the blues comes out to play then jazz during jazz coming out to play......wow!

I feel we all enjoy this song so much because Taylor enjoys singing his own song and is so at ease with it. There are 20+ performances on youtube of soul thing so I'm going through them all. Basically they are the same as the band is the same. Still it's fun.
At the Seattle performance he got the town mixed up and did a shout out to Portland. Then realizing his mistake he said "joking". It was funny. I happened to get that part with my camera vid.
I was hoping that ST would be released as the next song from the cd. I believe one of his originals could make the top of the charts. There have been many positive comments by critics and reviewers about Taylor's originals. Ü

Just found this on gofish posted by evancol from the Leno show on 5-14-07. It is outstanding! Check it out. Harp- solos- it's got everything.

A little of everything in the first vid ( slow, up tempo, scat, instuments, harp , impro on the basic lyric, but no tags. ) and the second one was similar to Boston, but with a different , fun wrapup.

Thanks for introducing these to this thread

I don't know what the deal is here but I have to let them load all the way thru; then start over from the beginning in order for either one to play. I've even upgraded to the hightest dsl I can get!
When I did view the Leno video, I HAD to play it several times. :hot doesn't even come close to my description of that performance!!!      and  :drool

I see the new videos have been posted today, but I am going to quickly choose anyway - I loved his performance of Soul thing in Orlando. Teri states it perfectly from my view - That boyish, happy, playful look on his face during the solo . . . .

And thanks also to everyone who provided other videos of the SOul Thing - really great!! Thanks so much!!

So, Orlando certainly gets my vote, although each of the performances is uniquely different! which is the best thing about watching Taylor in concert - I am going to my 6th concert next week, and each time I have heard Soul Thing, he does it differently - :guitar

on to Don't Let Me Down

RagsQueen - October 7, 2007 03:42 AM (GMT)
I liked the Eastbound and Down tags in the Tupelo & Niagra Falls version as well as the little bit of rap with the words. But for energy and showmanship, Orlando is the best of the three! I loved the hapr and guitar duel - Taylor and Josh just play so well off of each other! And I was at the Orlando show, which was awesome and very energetic! Orlando!

skygram - October 11, 2007 01:38 AM (GMT)
I love all the vids...BUT I still believe the BEST version of Soul Thing is on his under the radar cd...from the first time I heard it the phrasing, both the vocal and instrumental arrangement. I don't think anything captures it the way the original does. I have always said, that song was pure genius.

Not sure where but she must have been right in the wings as you can tell from the view.

mouser,
This video has got to be from Cohasset, MA in June - I know MJ was there, in fact she was in the section to my left -

it looks like she is in the wings because the stage is in the center with seating all around and it slowly revolves - it was an incredible view of all of the band - especially nice being able to really see Felix for a change - and Brian G seemed to enjoy always having an audience to play to - Taylor could walk around almost all of the outside of the stage and he is doing that in part of the video.

Taylor was really on fire and that version of HOTYL will always be one of my very favorite Taylor performances - cannot think of a way to describe how intensely GOOD ! it was to someone who wasn't there.

BTW - I haven't been doing this because I cannot watch the videos at all now. I could get the first round - Somehow - to load and play after a bit of double clicking but with the last two I get no reaction at all. Have tried a variety of "tricks" including reinstalling some programs but nothing works - have never had this problem before :confused

Hopefully evancol will come to the rescue, Linda !!!!
