Good choice....I love the way Taylor gets into t his song and I think I really like that Chicago version. He is animated and playing a little, and very into it, plus I kind of like the lighting too. Thanks for these, Evancol. :lilheart

chewsday - November 6, 2007 01:23 AM (GMT)
I can never watch these. They all want to play at once, and they're all stop and start. And I'm not on dialup. Oh well; my vote is for Waukegan because I was there. In fact, I was sitting right next to samz, who was doing the taping. Ah, such sweet memories....

Gypsee - November 6, 2007 01:31 AM (GMT)
Chews...that is so weird. Maybe we can see how to fix this for you or maybe put them on Sendspace so you can download and watch them.

Gr8fulheart - November 6, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)
I try to imagine myself at each of these concerts. Even with the quality of the audio not being the best; for me ~ it's 'Hands Down' CHICAGO! Taylor was so playful & simply immersed in what he was doing. I always Love it when he & Josh have their 'musical conversations. :hot Performance

LindaInIowa - November 6, 2007 02:56 AM (GMT)
I can't watch them either, regardless of which browser I use. Are these available in the Server?

Gypsee - November 6, 2007 03:03 AM (GMT)
Only the partials are on the server. I am going to try to upload these full versions to Sendspace for you.

LindaInIowa - November 6, 2007 01:05 PM (GMT)
Thank you so much...............

jonibug - November 7, 2007 04:08 AM (GMT)
They are all great...all unique, but that's Taylor. Every time he does a song it is a new and unique performance. Guess my personal favorite is Waukegan though, for a couple of reasons (neither of which concern Taylor's actual performance).....the audio is better and the pleasant lack of ear-splitting shrieks promote a whole lot nicer listening experience.

mouser - November 7, 2007 12:21 PM (GMT)
" Hold on to Your Love" is not one of my favorite Taylor songs. All three videos had either audio or video issues that took my attention away from the performance.

WAUKEEGAN: Taylor seemed a bit distant during this song, as if his mind was elsewhere; then the tags began and the tempo and energy lifted considerably. Just a night out with the boys , jamming.

CHICAGO: Liked the piano intro. There was not a lot of HOTYL sung here. Rather than jamming , I felt this rendition was more prepared in Taylor's mind. It was gruffer with chopped and diced phrasing and a faster tempo throughout. The tags were more sophisticated . If the "shouting of WOOs" at the top of someone's lungs could be edited out, this would be a wonderful piece.

COLUMBUS: A more frantic perfromance. It was simple: HOTYL and a tag done with high intensity.

Taylor always seems to put 100% into each song. He rarely really plays "Hold on to Your Love" , it seems to be just a way of getting into whatever tags are motivating him on that particular evening.

I enjoyed the jamming of Waukeegan, the more polished Chicago improvisation and the vocal tenor of the Columbus performance.

Again , not my favorite song, but it's Taylor !!!!

sallyannlady - November 7, 2007 01:02 PM (GMT)
I love this song- good choice this week. My take on it:

Waukeegan: Seemed to me not to be too into it at first- not too animated- just basically stood behind the mic and sang (liked the brief "day-o" he put in there). Brian's flute was AI- loved it, and a really great bridge going into the slower tag at the end.

Chicago: This sounded more like the way it did on UTR- original Taylor- loved it. Much more animated- seemed to be enjoying it more. Josh's guitar during "Electric Blues" tag was great, with him and Taylor playing off each other- love when they do that. This would be a fantastic vid if that person wasn't screaming right into the speaker all the time.

Columbus: Seems that most of the song was cut out or stopped and started filming- big part seemed to be missing. Still a good performance tho.

My fave? Ignoring the screaming fan, it's Chicago.

Still can't figure out why some of us can view these and others can't!

loripjb - November 7, 2007 01:57 PM (GMT)
Hey..I can finally watch one of the song videos and say I WAS THERE!!!

I actually saw 2 of these live. Waukegan and Chicago!!

I do have to admit this isnt one of my favorite songs. I still enjoy it when he sings it live, but its not one that I usually listen to at home while enjoying his music. Not sure why.

Of these 3, my absolute favorite is Chicago. He seemed to be having a really good time that night. You could tell during this song. The band sounds great behind him also.

It looks like Chicago is a favorite. I like that one best as well...just something about him when he's singing it....

Face it Gypsee, there is just something about Taylor singing The Telephone Book, that is mesmerizing.

Gypsee - November 7, 2007 09:56 PM (GMT)
HAHA....that is true!

Gr8fulheart - November 7, 2007 10:52 PM (GMT)
Funny you should mention the Telephone Book! I just got my new one today. So, which one of you ladies is gonna inform him that he can begin with Washington state & work his way thru to Florida? :lol2

cydter - November 8, 2007 05:04 PM (GMT)
One of my favorites from the beginning. I remember loving this song when
we all got our hands on UTR back during Idol. This is the one song I would
play over and over. Great choice ladies!!! I saw it live a couple
of times and loved it even more. Even used it as background music on a home video
of my daughter...LOL!

I would have to go with Chicago on this one!!!!

Pat - November 12, 2007 05:26 PM (GMT)
I really love this feature - Take 2 is so good for someone like me who is so busy and most of the time have no time to actually take the time to watch these videos - what a pleasure to just click and watch these great performances! I am not very knowledgeable at all about music, I just know what I like; and that is another part of the beauty of this Take 2 -

Anyway, I do love this song and have since I first listened to UTR; I will just have to go with the majority and pick the Chicago performance as the best - it was so good I could almost ignore the screaming fan - Taylor on the guitar and harp, the band as a whole, the flute - musically overall, and with the musical interlude plus the Electric Blues tag - this version was exceptional in my opinion! I really enjoyed it!

Gypsee - November 12, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
We are so glad you like it...it's fun!

san - November 12, 2007 10:37 PM (GMT)
I'm not going along with the concensus here...I'm going to choose Columbus as my favorite. Although there is some obvious video difficulties, from the parts that I see, I have the feeling that, if I were in the audience for all these, Columbus is the performance that I would enjoy the most.

The performance seems truer to the original song with great intensity at the end. I am not always a fan of the tags in the middle of songs, although some are very interesting. Taylor's songs are so great, I like to hear them the way they were originally...just my preference. I guess I have listened to UTR SO much, that is what I expect on these songs!

I do love the dance moves in the Chicago performance and the unique facial expressions at Waukeegan! All of these performances show the incredible talent on the guitar and harmonica. He's not just a pretty voice!!!

Gypsee - November 12, 2007 10:46 PM (GMT)
I was at Columbus and it was a high energy concert and very well received. I like different things about all of these, but I keep coming back to the playfulness in Chicago. It's so nice to be able to see so many different versions of a loved song :)

chewsday - November 13, 2007 12:51 AM (GMT)
Did these videos ever get put somewhere else so that we can download them? Just wondering; it's OK if they didn't, but I would love to see them. I don't know why they're not working properly for me.... Thanks.

I've always loved this song. It always amazed me that Taylor wrote a song with a calypso beat. Of the three posted I like Chicago the best. It seemed like the whole band was more into the song that night. But I have to cheat here and say that my 2 favorite performances of HOTYL were on the shadow tour, Angels at San Jose, CA with LiMBO for pure intensity. Taylor seemed to need the music that night. The other favorite performance was in Cohasset, MA. Taylor and the band were on that night. The tags were intense as well as the ending of the song, it built and built. It's funny, I just realized that both my favoites were when Taylor added skatting into the middle of HOTYL.

Tishlip , if you have the video or even audio of those performances you mentioned, please post so we can hear them OR direct us to where we can hear them. We never get enough of Taylor performing. !!!

mouser, HOTYL at Cohasset by mjsbigblog was on GoFish but it isn't there anymore. I am uploading that video and HOTYL from Angels in San Jose, CA from blondi0001 to sendspace now. I'll post the links for downloads as soon as they are finished.
Angels in San Jose, CA was the LiMBO shadow tour. It's one of my favorites because you can see how much it meant to Taylor to be able to play his music with his guys after being with the AI tour for so long. He even said in his book that the LiMBO shadow tour helped him keep in touch with his music during the AI tour.
