Title: The Official TEAM GREAT CRUSADE Thread.
Description: GOLDEN DEMON 2009! Pre-Heresy Painters!

VESPASIAN - September 24, 2008 09:58 PM (GMT)
Background and Details of Team Great Crusade.

Winning Golden Demon with a Pre-Heresy miniature, that may come from one of our talented members, would have a profound and vast impact upon the rest of the gaming/painting community. If this grail could be acheived then the resulting publicity would be immense, even more so if the Slayer Sword was won.

I must be modest here and freely admit that it was none other than Fulgrim, who suggested this excellent idea in 2007. That a team be formed to represent the forum in the competition.

I am Vespasian and I want to organise a Team Great Crusade for 2009.

Here's just a few points for you all to remember:

Membership:

I do not want this to be an elitist organisation.

Golden Demon is about challenging your own painting/modelling abilities (no matter what the standard) and striving to improve them by doing the best that you can. Furthermore the more Pre-Heresy miniatures on display, the more interest will be piqued. So as far as I am concerned the more the merrier, ability should not be an issue.

If this was an elitist organisation then I would say that I only want either i) previous Golden Demon winners or ii) people who could prove to me that they were almost equal to that standard. To be brutally honest such a requirement would exclude almost all the members on this forum!

However The Herald pointed out that we do realistically need a central core of painters (within the Team), who stand a decent chance of winning or at least getting through the cuts-it is after all a painting competition. I think that he is perfectly correct in what he says.

All are welcome to join Team Pre-Heresy, so just PM me or post your interest on this thread.

Theme:

The only theme for the miniatures is that they have to be of a Pre-Heresy nature. I feel that placing any other restriction, would be extremely detrimental to the quality of the entries.

It strangles the creativity of the individual artist, ignores the wide variety of creative strengths between individuals ( in another words someone may be excellent at vehicles but absolutely useless when it comes to single miniatures); furthermore it will not take account of the hard work that people have already done on their entries. However if you need the focus of a prescribed theme then PM me and I'll be more than happy to help.

Visual Link:

To link the entries visually, the plan is to incorporate this forum's logo somewhere on the miniature. This excellent idea was suggested by Ithmaril. This measure will then link the miniatures with the T-Shirts worn by members at Games Day, thereby piquing the interest of the public and promoting this forum.

In addition if any of you have work in progress, then please feel free to post it here.

c.gymer - October 21, 2008 01:47 PM (GMT)
Well I'm in. I'm planning a pre-heresy dual entry for 2009. Saul Tarvitz vs Lucius.

I'll post some of my work soon so you can judge my ability for yourself, but I'm back in the hobby after 13 odd years out. I made the first cut back in '95 when I last entered, and I'm getting plenty of practice in now to catch up!

VESPASIAN - October 22, 2008 03:05 PM (GMT)
Excellent! Great to have you in the Team and welcome to the forum!

I look forward to seeing your work c.gymer. Aahhh Gamesday 1995,...I remember it well. :D

I'm continuing working on a Pre-Heresy entry for the Warhammer 40,000 single miniature category at the moment. Its a Space Marine character but anymore than that... I can't say ;) :ph43r:

Will have to see if we can get some Team Great Crusade T-Shirts printed, for those members of our Golden Demon Team, will have a word with Shroudfilm to see if its possible.

It would also be great to get the whole Team together at Golden Demon as well.

c.gymer - October 22, 2008 05:05 PM (GMT)
Sounds like a solid plan Brother Vespasian. I wounder who you can't say about...

Kharn - October 23, 2008 01:45 AM (GMT)
I would love to put a single mini or squad from my new project, but sadly I don't go to Games Day. :(

I am well up for this - count me in (I am also a previous GD winner)

Cheers,

Cheers,

Excellent! I remember your excellent grot tank; a well deserved trophy Buzz! :D

I too am a previous Golden Demon winner. I have two first place Warhammer Single Miniature trophies thus far.

Its great to have another Golden Demon winner in the Team. I wonder how many more we will be able to recruit before the competition. ;)

So have you got any ideas for entries yet Buzz?

Jul063 - October 23, 2008 11:34 PM (GMT)
Hi,

Iit is a great idea to form a team around the great crusade thema

As co-founder and member of Team Montreal ™, i'd like to give a few advices:

- Stay concentrate on one goal and this goal should be to participate with the largest number of entries. The first time TM made a public entry on the painting contest scene it was at Conflict Montreal 2004, we entered every category and won 6 of 7 first places. we did the same during the following years until we started animated the painting classes during the events.

- meet together, although pictures and web are great tools, nothing is better than to meet and paint altogether (seems a bit hippie, but it is real fun). for that create events to gather a large part of members (you won't get all members for sure at the same time and the same place, i know, since i moved to the US, i'm a bit out). The first gathering event TM organize was invinting Jeremy Bonamant-teboul (3 slayers, more than 25 demons, and that's just for GW) to give a 3 days painting class, it is a lot of organization but it worthed every penny and sweat. we did the same, one year after with Allan Carasco. now some members of TM are giving classes (Vincent Hudon and Mathieu Fontaine for example)

- Get a private place to show Wip, ideas...it is sad but competion painting is as tough as hardcore gaming and ideas are easily stolen, TM has its own private discussion board on segmentummontreal (all admins and moderators from this board are TM members as well, but not the inverse)

- Try and Try and Try and try again. trials, mistakes and everything in between are the best way to improve yourself. with meeting and painting with other fellows, it can go fast.

On a personnal note, even if i would really enjoyed to be part of a Great Crusade Team, my loyalty goes to TM first. Also, i am not as productive as i would or as some other TM members, so i'd rather concentrate on my WE army first, then start again painting more seriously. (by that time my kids would be older and asking for a bit less of time...i wish i'd be out of the diappes ear...:)

so that's it, if i can help you further, just let me know

Cheers

J.,

Nice one Vespasian !!

"I too am a previous Golden Demon winner. I have two first place Warhammer Single Miniature trophies thus far."

Lets see them then !!

I do have an idea at the moment, bI am thinking about doing lots of entries, for the same chapter (Adeptus Custodes), so

Single miniature - Constantine
Squad - 5 x Adeptus Custodes
Vehicle - Emperors Gift (Grav Rhino)
Large scale - Custode Dreadnought
Duel - Sister of Silence vs Demon
Open - Dunno yet, maybe Terminators

Fulgrim - October 24, 2008 05:49 PM (GMT)
I'll join, I guess. That is, if you'll have me?Sadly I've never won a daemon but I'm a fair painter and have some ideas bouncing around.

Of course we will have you!!! :D

You are the Founding Father of Team Great Crusade; so we owe all of this, and the very existance of this team to your vision and foresight.

I am honoured to have you with us.

Wow thanks, didn't expect that.

I see someone mentioned the idea of a 'special access forum'. One which only members of the team could use, so in effect we can share ideas and pics for C&C withoit fear of our pieces being copied. WHat are the chances of us being able to do this?

Battle Brother Loken - October 25, 2008 02:15 AM (GMT)
do you have a young blood???
if not i will try
just send me somthing to paint i gues because i am out of parts

Magos Explorator - October 25, 2008 08:32 AM (GMT)
This thread is, to my knowledge, about a group of members entering Golden Demon with work themed along this forum's purpose. So it's good to work for any category which Golden Demon contains.

This also means, however, that you'll have to enter Golden Demon in order to take part (it's not a forum-based competition). To gauge your chances, you may want to look on the GW sites for examples of the standard.

Although, of course, you're more than welcome to post anything pre-Heresy in the painting forums here!

Battle Brother Loken - October 25, 2008 12:43 PM (GMT)
no you misunderstand
i was just saying that i can paint
this is not what i would enter
i can paint pre heresy
i just wanted to show you guys i am not dead weight

Well your more than welcome to join the Team, Battle Brother Loken.

However in order to enter the Golden Demon competition itself, the rules for the competition stipulate that an entrant has to hand in the miniature at the event in person. So you'd need to make sure that you could do that.

Which country are you in, and which is your nearest Golden Demon?

It is an excellent idea. The only part that concerns me though, is how do we check that prospective members to the Team, who want to join this closed section, are genuine members; rather than shadowy figures who want to carry out some miniature espionage?

Iacton - October 27, 2008 01:10 PM (GMT)
Isn't that a rather cynical view of people's intentions?

What I mean by that is that the hobby is becoming far more inclusive, largely thanks to the internet, and the prevalence of modelling and painting "in competition" seen on forums, facebook and also in real life.

I have recently joined the "Platoon Britannica", which is a group of British painters and modellers that now collaborate with ideas, tips, techniques and such with a view to improving as a collective. It is open to all levels of ability, and is just that... OPEN!

I do think that the secretive approach to what you intend to do only avoids plagiarism, nothing more.

I have very rarely seen anyone denigrating another person's work - apart from the occasional numpty - but even more rarely have I seen someone encouraging someone to do something badly to suit their own ends...

Also, if someone registers an interest in joining the team, then surely they are highly unlikely to do anything disruptive?

Sure, have the "team only" forum to avoid a stream of "awesome!" and smoke being blown up your backside, when you need genuine critique or guidance where it is due - especially if you want a real chance of competing at the highest level. But I think that it may not be much of a team effort if you can't easily get collective feedback on progress.

I would like to be involved, and I hope that I can offer assistance in getting some Demons directly attributed to this site, but let's remember that we're painting toy soldiers, not plotting the downfall of dictators ;)

[/tuppence]

Oh and BB Loken would be closest to GDLA.

Cynical?...perhaps but unfortunately plagarism is also a very realistic and growing concern Iacton:particularly in competition painting.

From the previous posts on this thread, it is clear that I am not the only 'cynical' person here and that my real concerns are shared by others.

It is this aspect we need to address effectively if members are to feel secure in posting their works in progress, etc. in a Team section. I will talk to Shroudfim upon his return, about the possibility of having a Team Great Crusade only section on the forum.

It would be good to have you involved in the Team Iacton.

Battle Brother Loken: Sounds good. Great to have a Youngblood in the Team.

Torg - October 28, 2008 10:01 AM (GMT)
I would like to join but I am in the states up here in Idaho,
to be exact.
But would be of interest to starting a Pre-heresy team up here in the frozen Northwest of the U.S.And I think there are some interest now then there was
with the old Gamers Haven.Specially now that a few friends of mine from the time I played against them as a Black Legionaire since the 1st codex chaos.
(I won practically all the time..using Abaddon and a bunch of WE Berzerkers.)
(I was the most hated...and repected!) :P ;) :)

Jul063 - October 28, 2008 11:34 AM (GMT)
from my past experience with the forum team members only, it is only to get a place where we can share special project, get constructives comments.

When Team Montreal started, we were the only one in North America, now you got Team Canada, Team North America....even if all those teams got close contacts, i.e Team Montreal invited TNA at the GD Toronto this year for the painting seminar and masterclass and the inverse at GD Chicago. it is mostly to avoid getting the same kind of collective project.

The first concern is not to avoid being plagiated or anything else, it is to get a place where you can share and have constructive comments without the sheer number of awesome posts or how do you do that.... we post our finish work in an appropriate public section so all the wip phase is kept for error coorection...etc...between fellow members.

By the way, i should be able to go to GD baltimore next year and maybe Toronto, my entries will be pre-heresied so......

Cheers

J

Hi kriegersen! Firstly welcome to the forum! Its great to have you here.:D

Thats awful about your Golden Demon entry for this year, did the coach crash?

It sounds like you've had quite alot of experience with various painting competitions,...not to mention success! ;) It would be fantastic to have you on the Team and I'll be more than happy to add you as a member.

I'm hoping to be able to create a Team Great Crusade only section of the forum, to which Team members will have exclusive access. Also we are currently sorting out an exclusive T-Shirt for Team members to wear at Golden Demon and other competitions. That way we can all look cool as we are collecting our trophies! ;)

Rogal Dorn: Good to have you onboard. :)

Torg: We need Team Great Crusade members from all over Terra, so you'd be more than welcome to join. Our Team has a real international flavour,...a bit like a Pro-Unity Army! ;)

Torg: Sounds fantastic; the more international branches of SPECTRE,...urm I mean Starbucks,...urm I mean Team Great Crusade, we have the better...

I suppose we should let everyone know where we're from and as such which Demon we will be entering so that we can start putting the teams together. That way we can also see about maybe organising some meet ups with fellow team members if we're not too far away.

I'll start. I live in Maidstone, Kent, England and can travel no problems to any meet ups for painting or beers! As such I shall be entering the 2009 UK Demon.

Not yet, we are still looking into the possibility of having a private section. But will post with news when I have it.

Also if and when a private section does become available then you'll be able to see it yourself on the forum. ;) :ph43r:

Well the main and only Theme is that the model has to be of a Pre-Heresy nature. What exactly are your strengths and weaknesses Battle Brother Loken when it comes to painting/modelling?

i am color blind almost all the way

Hey, I'm not too late to throw my name out there am I? I've not been particularly active on here for a while due to uni (bloody education getting in the way of precious modelling ;) ) but I'd like to think I could contribute something to the cause. Plus meeting you fine chaps at Games Day would be rather spiffing.

Anyway, I'm from Southend in Essex but live at Farnham, Surrey whilst at uni. Speaking of which I didn't expect to see another Farnham resident on here so hello to the buzz, if you see the guy with green hair walking about that'd be me!
