Title: Emperor's Children Phoenix Guard
Description: Just a suggestion to contemplate

I was thinking of using the Grey Knight rules to represent Fulgrim's Body Guards, but I'm still tossing up on whether to use Power Armoured rules & pts or Terminator ones.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

if your using the SM codex then honour guard are basically phoenix guard - just hand them relic blades!

Or if you wanted something more powerful (but obviously not tournament legal) then perhaps you could use the custodes rules from the BoLS Heresy era ruleset?

I'm currently using the Chaos Codex for my forces, and it's only for the handful of games that I play with my regular gaming buddies. :D

I have however pre-ordered a copy of the new marine dex, so I may change once more depending on which I feel is more in touch with the background I've got for my army.
I've looked at the "old" honour guard rules and their weapon rules etc, don't fit the fluff concerning Phoenix Guard (ie. Golden Power Halberds from Fulgrim) where as the Grey Knights do have them.

After much consideration this is what I have come up with to represent them.
Emperor’s Children Phoenix Guard
Troop Type Pts Ws Bs S T W I A Ld Save
Phoenix Guard 46 5 4 4(6) 4 1 5 2 10 2+/5+
Number per Squad: 3 – 10 Phoenix Guard
Equipment: Master Crafted Bolter, Power Halberd (+2 Str, included in profile) Phoenix Guard Armour (counts as Terminator Armour).
Special Rules:
Retinue: Only Fulgrim, or on very rare occasions Lord Commanders Eidolon & Vespasian, may be accompanied by a retinue of Phoenix Guard. Phoenix Guard are an HQ choice, but do not use up a Force Organisation slot. The Lord Commanders may only be accompanied by a retinue of Phoenix Guard if Fulgrim is not taking part in the battle. They may only be accompanied by 3 – 5 Phoenix Guard to represent the fact that the remainder are with the Primarch.

Aura of Perfection: When accompanying Fulgrim (and only Fulgrim), all enemies who wish to target the unit in the Shooting Phase, will be in awe of the perfection that is Fulgrim. To represent this, the following rule applies. Roll 3D6 & multiply the result by 3. This is the number of inches the units can be spotted at, and if the targeting unit is within this range then firing is conducted normally. A unit which fails to detect the Phoenix Guard misses its chance to fire at an alternative target in the confusion. Ordinance & Blast Weapons double the scatter distance if the Phoenix Guard are outside the spotting range rolled. Normal Night Fighting skills & equipment, e.g. Searchlights etc, have no effect on the Aura. Night Fighting conditions override this Rule.

Fearless: Accompanying their Primarch regularly into battle, Phoenix Guard have seen it all. There is nothing in the Galaxy that they have not already dealt with. To represent this they are Fearless as described in the Warhammer 40K rule book.
Deep Strike: As Fulgrim’s personal guard, Phoenix Guard will deploy however Fulgrim does. Phoenix Guard (& Fulgrim) may always Deep Strike regardless of the Mission being played.

Other Changes: The Aegis, Rites of Exorcism & Demonic Infestation, have been exchanged for +1 Initiative, which is already included in their profile above.

They're an addaption of Grey Knight Terminator Rules.
One of the guys I game against thinks that they're ok for me to use.
I'm yet to put it to the other blokes yet.

What do you all think of them?

Those rules seem ok, but maybe they could be slightly better? Alot of the fluff surrounding them mentions consistently that they're the most powerful and experienced warriors the legion has to offer.

Thinking the kind of stuff the Primarch would come up against, while these guys would work well against rank and file stuff, against tough opposition (genestealer, tyranid warrior equivalents or tougher) these guys would still get minced every time. Which makes you think, if the Primarch was fighting against the cream of opposition in every battle he would be replacing his Phoenix guard every time!

Why not add an extra attack and 1 more wound perhaps, and make them a chunk of points more? Just my thoughts (I know that the game bears little resemblance to the fluff and background though so perhaps the grey knight rules are ok!)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Pacific I know what you mean by making them better, however I wanted them to be able to be used as a tournament choice as such. By taking them as a pre-existing unit there is less chance of someone crying "foul!"

However, I just recieved my Advance order copy of the new SM codex.

I now retract my previous statement regarding the Honour Guard Massaen, I now know what you meant, I've just checked out the "new" rules for them. I can probably see myself changing codex's (again) <_<

There is far too much coolness & flexiblity in it to say no to.
eg. "cheap" pts Drop Pods!!! (I decided not to put an actual points value here) :o They're nearly half to cost of one of my Dreadclaws!

And you get half of them on turn 1!!!

My EC are going to an event in november as a chaos list before i add some cool new units (like honour guard/phoenix guard) and use the Sm dex...
