Title: Sculpting
Description: Help needed
Lord_Mortirion - November 8, 2008 09:16 PM (GMT)
Right, up untill now the most fancy thing i have done is the occasional 'hood' for some witch hunter inquisitor henchmen, converting mk7 helmits to mk3, and minor conversions to make mk 3 armour bits (i wont go in to the Great Unclean One i attempted ;) ).
Now i want to get in to sculpting more seriously, but due to recient 'events' all i have mini ise is 2 heads Iacton sent me and a pack of Milliput...
I found the following on CMoN, and i think if i had a little more patience (i get frustrated easily) i could replicate that, given time...
http://www.coolminiornot.com/index/whatm/Greens/id/202034At the moment i have no sculpting tool, and due to the cost of rent etc, will be a while till i can get one, so i was wondering, what do people use to sculpt, and what is the best way to do hands and feet, do the main part of the hand, then sculpt fingers when that is dry???
any advice or tips (keep tool - fingers wet etc) would be greatly appreciated, as i actually enjoyed sculpting (when it went ok) and i would like to get better...

Keep tools wet, work in layers and use lots of patience. If you can't get it right the first time don't worry.
I personally have no actual sculpting tools except my x-acto knife and an endless supply of cocktail sticks and I've been doing fine :D

But if you are thinking of taking it seriously you can get a great set of scuplting tools cheap on e-bay
You don't need em but they make life so much easier

you can also google 'American Science and Surplus' go to their site, and do a search for dentist tools.
dentist tools make decent sculpting tools.

my mates g/f works in a dentists, ill see if she can aquire me some...
so whats the best way to do hands???
Maratheus - November 16, 2008 03:56 PM (GMT)
I think making the basic form first and details second would be a good way to go.
I'd do something like a blob where I want the hand to be in and define the position.
Let it dry and then make a mitten-like form on top of it and defining the fingers. Remember to have alot of patience as hands are pretty hard to do. Hell, I've never even sculpted one.

Another thing to look up is Clay Shapers. They are fantastic for pushing around green stuff and the green stuff doesn't silicon tips on the tools. They come in both "hard" and "soft" tips on the tools, and the heads have different shapes for different applications. They have helped my sculpting out a lot. They cost about $5US a tool, and any art supply store will have them.
Another thing is needles, of different sizes. Just cinch down a needle into the tip of your finger drill.
Toothpicks are good shaping tools, and the water is retained in the wood so that will help with the sticking too.
Vaseline and light vegetable oil help with stickiness. Use very lightly and wash the completed miniature before priming though, remove any residue.
Hope it helps!

Harry Potter and the Threadcromancing Prince
It really is not Threadcromancy because you added something new.
Threadcromancy would be if you posted something like'Nice Model "and that was it after a topic is long gone.
As long as you have something constuctive to add replies are welcome to old posts.

Not wanting to make a thread of my own, do you think someone could give me a few tips on faces? I haven't plucked up the courage to have a crack at them yet. Even my Corax model is just a Space Wolf head.
