Ok, I'm doing some research on an army I'm building and I'm looking for comments and ideas on how to develop the army and the back story.

I've just started reading the Horus Heresy Books and I loved the idea of building my first 40K army as an ambiguous company from an ancient legion.

My idea was to start with my old stomping ground of Space Hulk, taking a Company of Wolves from the fleet which was dispatched to assist the lesser legions on One Fourty Twenty - 'Murder', and sending them to investigate an anomaly on the edge of the warp.

The Company consisted of 2 squads of Terminators, 2 Reavers, 2 Tactical, a cell of scouts, and a squad of devastators (basically the figures I have painted over the last 10 years are going to get a re-paint).

On investigating the anomaly they discover an old Alien freighter, and board to purge the unclean. In the heat of battle the warp opens again and takes the ship.

Skip forward a few millennia and the warp spits out the freighter into a completely changed universe. The remaining wolves take this chance to get back to the Cthonia, only to find it no longer exists. To make matters worse they run into a Crimson Fist battle ship and are immediately attacked as followers of chaos.

After much fighting the squad is taken prisoner and the Inquisition are brought into check out their story and loyalty to the Emperor.

The Company is eventually acquitted of heresy as they had no involvement with Horus' actions after Sixty Three Nineteen. They are put on probation and are to answer directly to Rogal Dorn.

As they refuse to wear the colours of the Crimson Fist (and Dorn would never allow it), the Company remains in the colours of the Luna Wolves. They have updated their Legion insignia to distance themselves from the Pre-Heresy Legion (sorry) but will not show it until they have been cleared of all accusations and have regained the honour of the Luna Wolves. To this end they wear a black shroud over the insignia , and are referred to as the Lost Wolves.

Your backstory sounds excellent and very interesting: particularly the part where they have returned to the 41st Millenium-full of interesting and very plausible details.

The one area I would like to see developed more, is the history/background of what happened to them whilst lost in the warp: details such as how this affected: their traditions; fighting style; the equipment they are armed with and use etc.

The 10 Millenia spent in isolation may have/must have some impact upon the Lost Company which may have given them some form of distinctive characteristic....did they develop an specialism to fight warp entities for example?

I really like the Company Insignia...a very classic combination which works very well. Do I notice a nod towards a certain Great Company of the Space Wolves?... ;)

Please post more details as you get them. I am fascinated to see how this 'Lost Company' develops.

There is a slight nod to the Space Wolf Logo, I must admit. I have always been a huge SW fan and developed a similar logo which for them which I have had on everything from figures to school books to my PC case. Even my car had a carbon fibre wolfs head on the wing. rofl

So here I stand, Captain Arden Fell. Commander of the 17th Company of the 16th Legion.

My initial thoughts were to be an entire company of Terminators , after all what use would a squad in plain old power armour be in close quarters combat with Trynaid (please excuse my spelling) but then that may upset those of the 1st Company and no one wants Abaddon's wrath and I don't particularly want an all black army of Wolves.

So I have come up with the following basic scheme for the armour.



The Insignia on the Left Shoulder will be covered with a black rag/cloth so that little is exposed, until such time the company has regained it's honour.

I'm working on Campaign Marks based on the Pre-Heresy Campaigns of the LW's and so far have some pencil sketches of three.

1 for The Speartip at Ullanor - based on the Parachute Regiment's insignia
1 for The Battle at Gorro - a simple coloured plate to depict the ork leaders hand being severed.
1 for The Dihinta Campaign - using a claw over another newer species logo. Afterall they must have met now and then before the new millenia.....

I was going to go with the old rank insignia's publish in an older edition of WD but the new WD has some more info in the feature on Painting Marines and as technically my Company is sporting Post Heresy Armour and paint scheme I think I shall go for the painted helmet route, also my eye's aren't what they used to be these days.

Good God I'm having fun with this. I wish I didn't have to go to work in the morning these last few weeks. :D

While even the 1st company wasn't fielded entirely in Terminator Armour (Catulan Reaver squad were an assault squad that was part of the 1st company for example) there should be no problem fielding Terminators, and they should be painted in pearl white if you are keeping close to the original Luna Wolves scheme. While Justaerin Terminator Squad wore black, they were just one of the Terminator squads from 1st Company - the rest wore white. In addition, there were terminator squads from other companies as welll, again in standard white armour - Vespasian posted some good info on the subject here. Seeing as the black armour seems to have been an honourific reserved only for the foremost squads among the 1st Company, any other Terminator squads, from whichever company they are drawn from, should really be in white.

I like the colour scheme - the black helmet and stripe look good, and the campaign badges sound interesting as well - keep it up!

I like numbers 1, 2, and 4. Particularly number 1, good idea to suggest 'Speartip'. The one incorperating thee Tau icon doesn't work for me though. It is two reminiscient of the Tau themselves (who hadn't even progressed to bashing things with rocks at this stage) and (to me anyway) doesn't really suggest a machine race. Maybe something vaguely similar to the Admech symbol instead, like a cog with the claws over the top instead?

Its Red Sorcerer, by the way! :D

The reason I used the Tau was I had some decalls and the Tau codex does refer to confrontations with the Empire early in their existance. Also the Battle suits would appear robot like.

But I bow to this forums knowledge on timelines.
