I would use the SM codex over the CSM codex for the fancy characters in the SM codex.

but if you use the marine codex, no two special weapons per squad, no 20 man squad sizes, no autocannon armed troops, no reaper autocannons, no special weapon armed havocs, no havoc missile launchers. and what do you get in return really? assault cannons? and some named characters which really shouldn't be used PH anyway... all in all i say use codex chaos, it sits better with PH.... excpet no scouts but with apcolypse and all it shouldn't be a problem.

I remember that the 3rd edition CSM Codex offered the possibility of bigger squads. Pre-Heresy squads were, if Im not mistaken, not that bound by "ten marines, one heavy and one special weapon" kind of thing.

Which codex?Well personally it all depends on the army,
The ones that turned traitor Chaos simply because there hasn't been much change to their formations, weapons, and procedures that are in the armies.(all accept for a few(possesed and what not.))If your going with one of the ones that stayed loyal,
SM codex, unless your going to do something like the DA, space wolves, or Blood Angels as they have their own codex. But if your doing a fist army of the first Co,
try the Black Templar codex as they were the first Co, and really I don't know if any things really changed with them.

This is the question I have been asking myself a lot. To me its Codex CSM all the way! The only reason I would want to use codex SM is drop pods. Even then you could use the old Forgeworld Deathclaw assault pod rules from Imperial Armour Update 2006.

Sorry for the Threadnomancy here, but...

I think the Space Wolf Codex might also be worthy of consideration here.

Of course, I was roundly criticized when I brought this up over on the B&C, mostly being accused of 'shiny and new' syndrome and ever being a 'power gamer'.

Of course, I thought it would work because:

1) 2 specials in a squad (Grey Hunters)
2) Larger Squad sizes (Blood Claws)
3) Heroic and uniquely armed individuals leading squads (Wolf Guard)
4) Powerful (if expensive) HQ's
5) Terminators with power weapons!
6) And still loyalist!

Clearly, you'd have to stay away from Thunderwolves and such.

Well, unless you were doing a pre-heresy Space Wolf army, I guess!

What does everyone else think?

I've joined in the debate on WS, BC and my blog :)

Really it's down to who you actually play with and against. Ask them what they are happy to let you use. If you ask on a global forum, especially Warseer, you're going to get some messed up opinions that really have no weight upon your hobby and environment.

i think we all get together and do our own pre heresy codex... :P

Or use the TF ones me and my friends who are doing PH armies are basing them around the rules and characters in them.
