Title: More DKOK Costume Tomfoolery
ShroudFilm - April 23, 2009 10:17 AM (GMT)
This has been in the pipeline since January, only just finished it last night. That shows how little spare time I am left after my daily AOTE preparations...
The Death Korps Trooper - Prayer to the EmperorIt's still far from perfect, but making this little sequence helped us to plan larger scenes, as we now know from experience what shots will be required and what proportion of FX ill need to be physical vs digital.
Vredesbyrd - April 23, 2009 10:23 AM (GMT)
Were they your words coming out of my computer screen or someone elses?
No Korpsman would take that long to prepare his gun and go over the top, he'd be shot for cowardice before then. :P
ShroudFilm - April 23, 2009 10:41 AM (GMT)
That was me... the take we did with our voiceover guy was all glitched for some reason, and I wanted to get it finished!
He wasn't preparing to go over the top, he was trying to clear a weapon jam, honest Mr Commissar sir...!
Vredesbyrd - April 23, 2009 10:51 AM (GMT)
Will you be dressing up at Games Day again this year, or will we be able to meet the real ShroudFilm as opposed to Korpsman Film?
Whitehorn - April 23, 2009 11:23 AM (GMT)
Seems a bit suicidal having his head up there with all that incoming fire :)
ShroudFilm - April 23, 2009 11:28 AM (GMT)
It may well be 'Commissar Film' this year... but we'll see... I think we're filming all day for BLTV, to be honest.
And Whitehorn - when were the IG ever known for their solid and sensible tactics?
shorty - April 23, 2009 12:11 PM (GMT)
If you do a commisar movie....please switch the weapons...or change their look...maybe we could help if it doesnt need to be real firing...trust me we know what we are doing... ;)
ShroudFilm - April 23, 2009 12:25 PM (GMT)
It's only really an FX test at this stage... we just added audio and the voiceover to make it less boring for viewers who aren't into 40k...
The number of YouTube comments we get about that rifle... sheesh...
shorty - April 23, 2009 12:36 PM (GMT)
You know know who you could ask about some replacement... ;)
Helping out a member of the guard...
malika - April 23, 2009 06:09 PM (GMT)
Haha, you should definitely make a video of you in that costume doing daily stuff. You know, going to the supermarket to do some shopping. In character of course!
Astelan - April 23, 2009 07:04 PM (GMT)
It should clearly be vacuuming...
ShroudFilm - April 23, 2009 09:33 PM (GMT)
It's hard enough to walk around without sweating to death... those who were present at GD08 will back me up there...
We filmed that clip on January 5th, at 8am, and it started snowing when we left. It was so cold that my feet and hands were numb... and yet when I took off the helmet and mask, I was so sweaty and hot that steam visibly rose from my head. I have it on camera!
malika - April 23, 2009 09:39 PM (GMT)
Sacrifice my friend...sacrifice! :P
I really do like your latest product and...well to be honest I think you've got the most convincing 40k costume somebody has ever made. Normally they all tend to look either, well cardboard made or horribly out of place/proportionate. You just managed to make a convincing 40k character in real life, even with the prayer...normally when I hear 40k stuff out loud I just want to hide under a pillow because it sounds so horribly lame (looks better on paper or on a monitor I guess) but the prayer was actually cool!
Keep up the good work!
How come is the suit to hot though, is it the weight or the lack of fresh air in the helmet? Is it heavier and tight than a normal gasmask/ski-mask kind of thing?
Astelan - April 23, 2009 09:46 PM (GMT)
Games Day was really hot in the NEC... I struggled to last the day with a teeny tiny hangover and I was frankly amazed that Shroud didn't pass out halfway through the day! We went over for a chat about an hour after getting in and he was literally dripping with sweat already!
Anyone remember the kid who made his very own power armour out of cardboard boxes and sellotape? I actually "LOL'd" when I saw him!

Hmm ok...i need to write something...cant let this comment stand alone...
ähem...ok now for the germans (not to bring Shroudfilms work down because he is the only one known of that made the Death Korps Costume dead on accurate)...
We are a group of maniacs who are trying to bring an inquisitorial Special Cadian Squad to life....
We dont want to be 100% accurate so some things are more nearer to life then to directly Tabletop...
Here is the page:
http://www.inquisitionstrupp23.de/and there go to : "Unsere Ausrüstung" on the left side to show our gear....hehe and dont forget to write something in our "Gästebuch" aka Guest Book... ;)
I need to mention that we definitly hate Plastic or Cardboard so everything you see especially the weapons are made of Steel ! The Armor too....it was a Special Project from our two leaders for german gamesday and our group won on one of these days Costuming part. Mission accomplished...Time goes by and it changed a bit...some went out of duty some new came (my person too)...and we are now ready for new missions to take....
So take a look maybe some Cadians are lurking around on some events here in germany....just drop by and say hello ;)
And now back to Shroudfilms Work ! :)
ShroudFilm - April 24, 2009 10:55 AM (GMT)
Shorty's group have made some EXCELLENT stuff - I'm hoping I can one day get a prop rifle that looks as good as that! :)
The thing that makes the DKOK suit so hot is that the coat is full-on wool, buttoned up right to the neck. I only wear a vest underneath, and I still sweat something unholy...
The mask is latex and extremely tight, and because the respirator pipe doesn't go anywhere, my breath vents back into the eyes and out through the hole beneath the pipe.
I am also wearing a wool balaclava under there, to hide the joins in the mask/neck.
Vredesbyrd - April 24, 2009 11:20 AM (GMT)
See that's what happens when you try to save money and buy fetish masks rather than forking out for old real ones. Still it was an awesome costume, though you must've smelled lovely by the end of the day. :P
Whitehorn - April 24, 2009 11:37 AM (GMT)
Got myself a cheap respirator for a Harajuku, but tempted to take the outfit further for something on Games Day. I found it hot there just in T-shirt and Shorts... dare I actually wear clothes? :P
ShroudFilm - April 24, 2009 12:20 PM (GMT)
Whitehorn - April 24, 2009 12:40 PM (GMT)
That does read very wrong, admittedly :P
shorty - April 26, 2009 08:23 PM (GMT)
I got you covered Shroud Battlebrother *ggg*

is it ok to post that in here Shroud ?
Hope that we meet some day for changing out some infos...Also i could try to keep babbeling to my boss about making an Extra Rifle for "somebody special"... ;)
shorty - April 26, 2009 08:33 PM (GMT)
Hehe one more...i love my heavy Bolter...the Air Cavalry Version is the best one ever created...but look out if such a sucker is dropped and the shute is going out...

Pics are from our Homepage.
ShroudFilm - April 26, 2009 08:35 PM (GMT)
That's VERY cool!
What do you make your armour out of?
shorty - April 26, 2009 08:43 PM (GMT)
Steelplating...dont ask if this armor is heavy...but its a little bit lighter then the first original Armors created...out Lt. doesnt like anything that looks like plastic so he made everything that could be made of metal out of metal...All Armor pieces and all the weapons...
Right now we have a Comm Unit in the making (the forgeworld style) that hooks into the backarmor so every trooper could wear it...and in the future we are going for a Plasmagun...
Hehe you should see the faces of guys that are coming by and are still thinking we use the same material like the Star Wars Storm Trooper Armors...and then they knock on it and it makes a metal ringing *ggg*...
;)
I like my Lasgun...experimental prototype one with retractable stock...M41... ;)

Iacton - September 10, 2009 08:24 AM (GMT)
Is there a name for the opposite scale to epic??! :o
shorty - September 10, 2009 08:36 AM (GMT)
maybe emperor.....uhhhh no that would be heretic....i need to look out....any more words and our inquisitor would send me to the prison planet...or would get me the chief of the kitchen status for a lifetime....that would be my death....
So now who would build us a lifetime chimera ?....step forward ;)
Dargor - September 10, 2009 09:10 AM (GMT)
I really am lost for words...Even the classic "dear Emperor bananas batman!!!" seems to be lacking here. The seer awsomeness that you guys are can be somewhat approached by the following series of faces ->  :o
Cheers!

It would be quiet a ride or travel to come to germany and visit that show but maybe next year it will be worth it ?
Its in Koblenz. You can travel by train or via flight to Frankfurt Main Airport and from there to Koblenz via train. Koblenz also got some sweet Hotels or pensions, guest houses where you could stay.
You could then take a taxi and drive to the site or you could inform me so i maybe could pick you up and bring you to the encampment.
I think the date for the next show will be the same week in september.
We are triing to improve the camp a little bit...our Lt. is building some new features...maybe new weapons and the normal program maybe will also be stocked up (more tank driven vehicles maybe)...
So to the guys i know from the isle Iacton, Shroudfilm maybe you two have some spare money in September next year to come visit us and have some smalltalk and all that other stuff going around... ;)
Would be nice to see someone from the Great Crusade Crew.
Hehe you could even test out the armor and equipment (ok only for weight but the Stormcannon in the bunker is chain driven so it works on spinning)...
I think our Inquisitor Theobald von Rott will have its good Whine ready for the guests and we are always having some pints ready...
Hey there is still beer in the future....
So maybe think about it for next year...because this heavy stuff makes it nearly impossible to show up at gamesday in england...
We need to stay here in germany....
ShroudFilm - September 10, 2009 10:16 AM (GMT)
Wow, that is some real awesomeness right there!
I've let my DKOK efforts fall since the New Year, although the coat still hangs in the studio wardrobe - I need to dig it all out and see what improvements I can make.
I do intend to visit Germany, since I can actually speak a reasonable amount of German! This might be a good excuse for next year...
shorty - September 10, 2009 11:12 AM (GMT)
Hey that would be nice and it will be a year till the next happening so preparations could be made...hmm time for some travel...without wifes that are nurgling around... ;)
shorty - October 31, 2009 11:59 PM (GMT)
To use this thread and not making another....
Be afraid be very afraid....
One Cookie for the person who could say what this will be when its finished...

;)
You know we are crazy...yes...and we a proud of it...im loving it...
ShroudFilm - November 1, 2009 04:04 PM (GMT)
Oooh oooh oooh! AUTOCANNON! :D
Looking great!
shorty - November 1, 2009 09:41 PM (GMT)
It is one but a special one...could you guess what will be build ?...
Iacton - November 2, 2009 01:00 PM (GMT)
shorty - November 2, 2009 02:51 PM (GMT)
Psst....Tarantula is too small because this what you see is a long barreled Autocannon...hmm where do you fit Long barreled Autocannons onto ?...
It will be a Hydra Anti Air Platform !!! Including Radar Dish with Operator (will be me in Flakarmor)...
I got the Software for the Fire Control System and Radar at Hand (sweet Radar Simulation with simulating Bogeys)...we have a sweet British Army Laptop (its one of their older models which they sell not the one that was found on a scrapyard with the important datas still on him) that fit into the Radar Dish and the Housing where the Gunners are sitting will also getting some Input devices...
Our boss had completed all 4 Barrels and one housing so far...and we are still not done...the Trailer for the transport of the Site had also been purchased...
Hmm we will hopefully be ready in September/October for the Military and Offroad Car Meeting in Koblenz/Germany...
Iacton - November 2, 2009 03:04 PM (GMT)
I think that you'll find that your own answer is wrong. I reckon that your bonkers mates are scratch building a 1:1 scale Knight titan thing.... ;)
shorty - November 2, 2009 03:24 PM (GMT)
damn that why hes babbeling and we didnt get to much of his work...
No he is definitly working on that Anti Air Hydra Flakplatform...or he uses the housing of the Quadcannons as the Knight head.... :D
PS:

shorty - November 14, 2009 06:48 PM (GMT)
Get them while they are coming...sneaking a secret pic through...hope my Lt. isnt looking here *ggg*...
