Title: The Vth Volscani Rgt
Description: Traitors to the Emperor

Titus Pullo - June 4, 2009 02:23 PM (GMT)
Inspired by all you good people on the boards, the Tempus Fugitives and the new IG Codex, i really wanted to give these traitors a good go and to motivate myself I've set up this blog.

I already have the core of the army that some may have seen elsewhere on the boards or at AOTE. There are around 50 infantrymen armed with a combination of Auto and Las guns and I have decided to make all 'Line' squads the same with a sergeant with basic pistol and chainsword, a Vox Operator and a Plasma Gunner. The only distinction they have is white piping on their uniforms. They were constructed from a mixture of Cadians, Forgeworld Renegades and Pig Iron heads

Deciding that Heavy Weapons just slow down the infantry and are better employed in concentrated batteries I have grouped them altogether with blue piping as the traditional artillery colour :)

The real fun starts with the command squads. For the AOTE army I didn't bother with an HQ as I had to have a Space Marine in charge. Now I can break free from the shackles of those pumped up freaks!

Let's have some fluff;

The planet of Volscani is located in the Ultima Section of the Galaxy and as such is used to marauding Orks and violence. The Regiments have proved their worth and been loyal to the Emperor in exchange for the protection of the Imperium of their home planet. However, there was something not quite right about the Vth Regiment. Unusually the recruitment of Volscani Regiments was undertaken by geographical location which was believed to enhance the espirit du corps of the men as they had the support of their familiar friends and often family members. This was unfortunate.

The Vth came from the Bolgar region in the northern hemisphere of Volscani and were known locally for their use of 'majik'. It was nothing spectacular. Village elders were sometimes able to create a small flame from their finger tips, a curse from their lips and a farm crop might fail in the Autumn.

In battle their differences became more apparant to the other Volscani who fought alongside them. The first campaign the Vth took part in was fought over the industrial wastes of the Forge World, Inger XII. Respirators had to be worn due to the dangerous gases. The Vth have never fought without them. Some say they have become addicted to the combat drugs piped into their respirators, others whisper that when they join battle a change takes over their faces and their eyes blaze behind the masks. Whatever the reason, the Vth keep to themselves. Troopers of other Regiments whisper that they saw a trooper lose his arm to an Ork Klaw. The Ork was bought down by the rest of his squad. The wounded trooper stood, his wound seemingly staunched almost instantly, picked up his severed limb and calmly rejoined his squad.

The Heresy has become apparant and the outsiders are being purged from the ranks of the Vth. Lieutenant Jung, the son of a Southern Volscani Noble was quickly despatched by Sergeant Major Tamas on orders from the Colonel himself. Tamas has obviously benefitted from the Dark Powers and received command of Axos Platoon.

So that's what I have to start with. I have done up a couple of Land Raiders for them.

Now it's time to start on the HQ section. I already have someone lined up for Primaris Psyker

I wanted a really characterful model like Sergeant Tamas who had a chaos look but someone who is definately in charge. Thought I should go for the dastardly Colonel who masterminds the Traitor takeover and could use just the HQ rules or possibly adapt the Urksar Creed rules for him. After browsing through the list of links I found this chappy;

So on delivery of this and also the fantastic GaleForce9 Bone Saw (try one yourself!) I set to work hacking him up. Decided I wanted a seperate banner bearer so that had to go. Also the pistol holstered at his hip looked easy to dispose of and will replace that with a holster from the Cadian command sprue. Not quite decided on this head yet but I really think it's a good looking mean one.

Looking good! Hope to see you there in September.

Just be careful with non-GW models if you are.

I got some respirator heads from Pig Iron to get some Guard fodder squads in :)

Titus Pullo - June 5, 2009 02:45 PM (GMT)
Cheers dude. Unfortunately can't make the September event which is a bit of a bummer but I am just going to build and build on this army till next year so I should have something good for the 3rd AOTE :)

Iron Corsair - June 5, 2009 07:59 PM (GMT)
I like the Platoon Commander the best. He's awesome!

DaemonlordAbraxes - June 5, 2009 08:33 PM (GMT)
Yeah, the platoon commander is awesome!!!

ShroudFilm - June 5, 2009 11:11 PM (GMT)
He's taller than a damn Space Marine... very intimidating when he's leading the charge towards you!

Titus Pullo - June 6, 2009 11:18 AM (GMT)
It would be cool if Forgeworld had a few more Renegade HQ bits to choose from. I'm not really good enough with the sculpty side of things to attempt anything like that. Thanks for the comments guys, will have to get the Colonel undercoated today and start on the paint job.

Also started building a crucified guardsmen to act as a bit of disgusting decoration!

Titus Pullo - June 7, 2009 01:57 PM (GMT)
Update:

Decided the head on the officer needs to be more 'officery'! Snapped off the baneblade commanders head and much happier!

Doing another basilisk (boring!) so decided to spice it up a little by having it being reloaded by the forgeworld Renegade artillery crew so I have cut open the breech and started modeling the inside of the barrel.

It's been a while but finally managed to finish Colonel Teppez, leader of the Volscani Vth. Did a bit of research on Eastern European heraldy which is the sort of feel I want and found the Coat of Arms for Translvania. Unable to help being cheesey I thought that would be a great Unit badge to stick on my vehicles and banner so that is what I managed to doodle on this chaps shoulder pad.

Titus Pullo - June 25, 2009 03:15 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the praise guys, Malika will post a bigger version of the big pic now I have managed to resize the massive ones at the beginning of the thread!

Back to work on the crucifixtion/company banner next!

ShroudFilm - June 25, 2009 05:18 PM (GMT)
We'll get some wicked terrain pics done next time we play, too... this army looks well impressive when it's all laid out ready to be massacr- I mean, played against. :D

Titus Pullo - June 27, 2009 11:26 AM (GMT)
Ok here are a couple of bigger versions of the above pics

Right now we have an unfortunate dissenter from the Vth. On the orders of Colonel Teppez all soldiers suspected of sympathising with Loyalists are made brutal examples of;

A WIP and my green stuff skills aren't all that. Not sure about the hands (from the WH Zombies box), do they look too big? Can try chopping them off and finding some suitable guard replacements.

Titus Pullo - July 5, 2009 11:14 AM (GMT)
Ok kept the hands as is. Used the Tamiya Clear Red for gore tutorial et voila!

Its a shame that this army won't be there in september, it would be good to see it in the flesh.

If there is little more progress on my WE stuff before August-September, I may end up taking a portion of this army to fill the gap in mine!

DaemonlordAbraxes - July 6, 2009 04:01 PM (GMT)
sounds like a good idea to me

Titus Pullo - August 13, 2009 01:07 PM (GMT)
Now Shroud has finally done my undercoating I can get back to work! Here are my elites! (Strictly speaking they are troop choices.) Each Regiment of Volscani consists of five battalions of roughly one thousand men each. Four battalions are regular, however one is an elite Grenz battalion. It is recruited from the best of the other line battalions and as such is counted as vets from the Codex. Unlike the rest of the line, the best equipment is reserved for the Grenzers and kept in good condition. Once recruited they learn the ancient tales of Volscani and are allowed to wear the sacred black armour.

One squad has been kitted out for tank hunting duties with melta-guns and the other squad are multi-purpose grenade launching troops used to back up and bolster the line troops.

These soldiers are from the 12th company as denoted on their shoulder markings. The sergeants pads carry a white skull (from Tank Commander sprues). There is a 'chosen man' in each squad too, denoted by a chevron on the right shoulder pad. These men are awarded their rank for best marksmanship in each squad.

ShroudFilm - August 13, 2009 08:14 PM (GMT)
This was terrifying... I based and undercoated them while he was away for a week, and then literally TWO DAYS LATER he had painted all 25 minis!

I swear I saw steam rising off those brushes...

killjoy - August 14, 2009 04:48 AM (GMT)
what he cant base his own models cus i know i can't
but really looking good, can we get a pic of the sarg. in second pic please.
and Shroud i only counted 21 models

Titus Pullo - August 14, 2009 11:15 AM (GMT)
It does help when the colour palette is only dry brush codex grey, boltgun metal, pale flesh, white and gloss black.

Yes only 21. The overaweing-ness of the horde must have got to shroud :D

ShroudFilm - August 14, 2009 12:35 PM (GMT)
21 in that picture... I undercoated 25, if you count heavy weapons teams as 2 men.

Itkovian - August 14, 2009 03:35 PM (GMT)
Very nice. If you keep going at that rate, you'll have an army in no time...

Mabrothrax - August 14, 2009 03:43 PM (GMT)
Looking great so far. I love the way you're using and expanding the fluff as you build the army.

Keep it up, 20 models in two days? You'll have a decent sized force in a couple of weeks! Git!

:P

ShroudFilm - August 14, 2009 08:33 PM (GMT)
He already had 60+ before this batch...

With the tanks and artillery, he already has easily 1000pts using the new codex.

Titus Pullo - August 18, 2009 03:47 PM (GMT)
Ok here is a close up of the Grenzer Sergeant. Created a halberd from the bayonet thing from the Chaos Reaper Autocannon. Not the best conversion in the world but I was getting a bit tired and frustrated with the damn thing!
user posted image

The other sergeant with a bionic arm from the Cadian command sprue.

This next squad are also veterans. However they are a little different from the Grenz battalions. They consist of individual companies of the line battalions. The only thing distinguishing them is the red piping on their uniform. Each battalion has twelve companies of 100 men each and two of those companies are these elite Jaeger or Hunter battalions. They tend to be recruited from those Volscani warriors who have a history in the urban slum hives of the home world. They are excellent close quarter fighters and as such are armed with flamers and shotguns to winkle out defenders. They are often attached to Land Raider squadrons to get them into the thick of things without taking heavy casualties walking through no mans land.

Titus Pullo - October 13, 2009 05:45 PM (GMT)
Done the regimental standard bearer. Needs dirtying up a little though to go with the rest of the guys. Also need to psyche myself up to paint the same thing on the reverse!

After the Gedren event I felt jealous of all these spanky marines and then H-Gate telling me he was going to start a new army. I can't justify any major purchases and haven't got ages to do anything major anyway. So what can I do?

TANKS!!!!

I've never been much of a tread head before and so most of my vehicles have just been finished to just a gaming standard of Catachan Green with Black wash and metal on the metal bits. So I thought I should try brushing up on Tank Techniques. If anyone has any tips for me I would love them. Been scouring the boards and net for tutorials. One of the best I found was Ultrawerke which I think has been posted elsewhere here but for completeness sake check it out.
Ultrawerke Blog

Anyways I started out with a fairly clean tank looking like this;

I thought I really ought to add a few chaos bits etc although I wanted to keep it subtle but also it felt a bit flat so I wanted to liven it up a bit. Comment much appreciated by seasoned tank people.
