Title: TGC's First Official Event!
Description: Let's gauge interest here...

ShroudFilm - July 9, 2009 03:43 PM (GMT)
Ok people, here's a biggie...

The Great Crusade are teaming up with The Games Shop in Aldershot, Hampshire for the first ever official TGC gaming event! We will be running a whole day of PH goodness and we hope to have some special guests too... ;)

Basically, it'd be great to get some feedback from you guys, most especially on WHEN you'd like the event to be, but also what you'd like to see, or if you'd be willing to help out with demonstrations/gaming etc.

We're aiming for sometime towards the end of the year, to avoid clashing with Games Day and the next AOTE event. We hope to have a big multiplayer campaign day (possibly even recreating the first landings of the Siege of Terra?) and anything else you'd like to see... so let's hear those ideas!

Mortarion - July 9, 2009 04:42 PM (GMT)
Late Nov would be best I think, come december people are going to be starting to plan for christmas and money gets tight. I'm happy to help out with running/demonstrating whatever on the day. The siege sounds like a good idea, especially with Planetstrike being around now.

Maybe run a couple of workshops? Converting/painting ones?

Pacific - July 9, 2009 06:00 PM (GMT)
I agree with Mortarion, December is too late but other than that I think any time leading up to it would be fine!

Whitehorn - July 9, 2009 06:06 PM (GMT)
Not fussed, I can't justify 2.5 hours drive to play games for a few hours ...

I think if you totalled up the amount of hours you drive for gaming per month vs the amount of hours' gaming you do, this would be really economical by comparison...

We seem to have a higher concentration of southerners in the membership, but it's ideally about getting new people in as well. I'd prefer it if it wasn't just 20 TGC members and no one else - we could do that any time!

Mabrothrax - July 9, 2009 06:36 PM (GMT)
I went for late Oct, but early Nov seems ok as well. Avoiding December seems like a good idea, as does trying not to conflict with/be too close to other events.

Question is what would you do? I guess alot depends on the space you have more than anything else.

A participation game or two (obviously based on HH events) would be cool. If it were a 'bring and battle' the dropsite massacre makes sense. Siege of Terra... why not? I'd have a go at building some Custodes for that!

It'd be nice to see a game of BFG.

A conversion clinic? deffinately a great idea, but resourcing suitable parts could be a pain, as well as costly.

Special guests? A book signing?

A quiz, or some sort of conversion/painting comp... with sexy prizes of course.

I think more importantly though, there should be the unofficial TGC post-event booze massacre ;)

ShroudFilm - July 9, 2009 06:45 PM (GMT)
I used to live in Hampshire... I'm sure at least SOME of the pubs I used to go to are still going... :D

Would people like to make a weekend of it? I can certainly see myself travelling down and staying at a hotel or somewhere, quite happy to go out in the evening or play some more games.

the buzz - July 9, 2009 08:06 PM (GMT)
If people want to come down the night before, I can make the shop available that night as well, and we could all go out for a curry or similar.

I love the Converson/ Painting comp idea, with regards to space, I have over 2,000 square ft of gaming space, over 3 floors !!

Whitehorn - July 9, 2009 08:09 PM (GMT)
I live 5 minutes from my games club. That's economical :D

If we can group up a few people from Tamworth/Burton that'd work out better, but I'd have to bend some arms here.

NeDlol - July 9, 2009 08:17 PM (GMT)
Well I was interested, then a two hour drive down made me sigh but then Buzz's suggestion for a curry got me even more interested than ever! Nothing says awesome like wargames then going to have a balti at a local curry house!

Count me as IN :D

ShroudFilm - July 9, 2009 08:18 PM (GMT)
I think we'd have 2-3 from Burton straight away. More likely to be possible for all involved if we can raise a posse from each area in the UK?

"I'm looking for passage to Aldershot - just myself, the boy, two carry cases... and no questions asked..." :D

NeDlol - July 9, 2009 08:32 PM (GMT)
Well I'm from Northampton, I drive a 5 door ford focus with a large boot for cases, so if anyone near me wants a lift give me a PM

Pacific - July 9, 2009 10:17 PM (GMT)
I'd be well up for it! Curry and a couple of pints at a bar and getting to meet everyone would be awesome!

About 2 hours drive for me* from Cheltenham so no problem if we are making a weekend of it.

ShroudFilm - July 9, 2009 10:41 PM (GMT)
If we get enough interest, it could be arranged to have a minibus or something to pick people up between Derby and Aldershot, depending on numbers and route...

Kriegersen - July 9, 2009 11:51 PM (GMT)
good luck getting us northeners (and I do meen north, you dont get more north than carlisle before going into scotland :D ) down there, and trust me, I would, but it is a little impractical for the likes of me, vreds and lil horus ;)
however, I am willing to add some suggestions in...

comps are good, but you want something short and sweet, like a painting competion is good, because you dont have to sorce the parts out for lord knows how many people...
plus prizes could be like one of the HH books, the HH art books or even what we all will definatly apriciate here, toy soldiers :D :D :D

if ure doing a all nighter, why dont u do a lock in night like my local GW, £5 entry (settle on prices yourself, its your event, this is just how much we charge), which entitles you to your entry, gaming and food ;)
gaming could be a mega battle, apocalypse game, a tornement, a few games which effect each other, these are just examples

on the main day you could and probly will do HH themed games, but I think its fair to say that you will get a few people there that dont do heresy themed armies, or even space marines, so make sure the games are versitile, the last thing you want is people feeling left out ;)

do a quiz throughout the day with prizes, that always makes people happy

and last but sertainly not least....
CAKE!!!!!!!!!!

ALWAYS
goes down a storm, nothing says wargaming like a great gmae or activity then some cake ;)

just a few suggestions, hope it goes well for ya all ;)

Vredesbyrd - July 10, 2009 02:18 AM (GMT)
Something like this could be very cool and it'd be a good drive to getting stuff done and having it at The Games Store does make perfect sense after all.

It'd be better for wee hairy Northern types if it was a weekend thing, its easier to justify to better halves travelling hundreds of miles for a weekend than for one day. That and the public transport in this country is bobbins so I'd need about a week to get that far south!

Beer would make such a trip even more worthwhile. :D

Mortarion - July 10, 2009 05:18 AM (GMT)
yeah I hadn't considered travel. Still, count me in, trains pretty much run manchster>everywhere these days.

just had visions of me sat on a road side with a sign saying "Will travel south for curry"

Mabrothrax - July 10, 2009 07:36 AM (GMT)
Given that there isn't likely to be the usual £30-50 entry that comes with most event (althoguh I'm happy to support with some sort of ticket price), the travel &possible accomodation doesn't bother me.

This man is a genius. A special late night 'lock in' apocalypse game (or mini tourney?) would go down a treat - call it 'dead by dawn'! :D

ShroudFilm - July 10, 2009 08:13 AM (GMT)
Oh my sweet Emperor... Kriegersen is a genius! We should have a late-night scenario game as part of the planetary invasion, and we have night-fighting rules for the WHOLE GAME! :D I love 'Dead by Dawn' as a title too...

Lots of PH-themed quizzes and little prizes would be awesome. I'm currently having a custom TGC banner/flag made for just such occasions, so if necessary we can fly the colours etc. A painting contest is a good idea, call it the "Golden Warp Beast" contest or something...?

Loving these ideas people, keep 'em coming.

the buzz - July 10, 2009 11:52 AM (GMT)
How about turning the lightds off, only using torches & laser sights !!!

ShroudFilm - July 10, 2009 12:34 PM (GMT)
Haha, awesome! :D I foresee spilled drinks...

Anodyr - July 10, 2009 01:53 PM (GMT)
I'm certainly tempted... I cant imagine many events happening much closer to B'mth for me to attend. :)

ShroudFilm - July 10, 2009 02:17 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't know of any venues much closer to Bournemouth anyway...? I've not lived down that way since 2004! :D

It looks like being a great event - we've got some great ideas going back and forth already.

Anodyr - July 10, 2009 02:36 PM (GMT)
The BIC in Bournemouth would be a great venue for a tournament affair - the local games club had a games day there several years ago but I think it failed somewhat due to lack of promotion, which was a shame...

Hmm... 'Golden Throne' sounds like an expensive toilet;

Golden... Aquila, Warmaster, Primarch, Legion, Crusade/Crusader, Talon (of Horus), etc...

Wishful thinking perhaps, but as someone who never got round to buying any, I'd love to see a 'demo game' for the HH card game. Could be the perfect way for people to offload massive piles of multiple commons/uncommons (something I like to do with the stupid amount of V:TES, LoTR and 1st Ed Star Trek I have).

Another simple but really cool idea as a give-away/prize/item-for-sale would be for someone to print off a few sheets of the heresy era Legion decals from BoLS.

A pseudo 'scrap daemon' contest - possibly a part of a heresy conversion tutorial/workshop table. a supply of select marine bits would be needed (Khorne Berserkers box being the most economical for 'heresy-esque' bits).

So long as I've got a Guinness in one hand and some D6 in the other, I'll be happy

ShroudFilm - July 10, 2009 05:00 PM (GMT)
I've been going over the details of the venue, and it sounds like we have our very own mini Warhammer World! Kitchen, toilets, 4 floors... awesome.

HHCCG would be great - Titus Pullo and I have a few decks made up, and I actually managed to finish the whole set (barring some redemption art cards, boo hiss!) so we could run some games and show people what's what. IIRC the cards are playable straight from the pack and you only need 5 packs to make a deck. Interesting. :)

I'm just talking to the printers about the banners we were making for AOTE in September, and we're altering the design to be useable for this too.

I'm currently drafting a campaign of missions, so we may well have some serious bring-n-battle PH gaming going on!

BigWill - July 10, 2009 08:41 PM (GMT)
Unless there is a great Wall table I would think Istivan 5 would be better
It was the engagement with the most Legions
The New Bastions and walls seem absolutly perfect for Istivan.

I would have other tables with other great Counts as games going
Necrons count as Technocracy
Nids Counts as MegaArcnids and so on.

I am just sad I live across the pond and an 10 hour flight is ok of the question :D

why thankyou :D I do try...

you know what would make a great trophy for any of the events, be it painting, converting, tornement, etc.., the marine casualties painted gold and put on a wooden plyht, display base, etc....

and shroud, I do hope this banner for events will be at games day!!!

ShroudFilm - July 11, 2009 11:00 AM (GMT)
Of course! I'd hope that people would see it as a rallying point for TGC members... I might say something like "come up to us at Games Day, stand beneath the TGC banner and shout FOR THE GLORIOUS EMPEROR OF MANKIND! at the top of your voice and you get a free upgrade to the Loyalist group" and see how many people come out of the woodwork... :D

Anodyr - July 11, 2009 02:42 PM (GMT)
I'm thinking I may have to scrap my plan to sell my vossies and actually get my arse in gear to turn them into G5-2C's after all...

I would do that. Seriously, I would, except I don't live in Britain. And I'm too young to go there alone. :( Oh well, in several years, you may just see me there....

DaemonlordAbraxes - July 11, 2009 05:34 PM (GMT)
Here's a problem, I'm American, i cant go anyway which sucks very badly, unless we could possibly do this around christmas ;)

OOH, i will shout that very loudly

H-Gate - July 12, 2009 07:45 PM (GMT)
This sounds like an awesome idea! As I only live in London it would not be fair of me to turn this down when people are travelling from far and wide to play their part!

I'd definately be up for making a weekend of it too (mmmm... curry and apocalypse!). I can bring my Imperial Army and Daemon armies with me too to try and up the numbers for any participation games that we might do etc.

As for ideas, painting competions are obviously always a good showcase for the period. Maybe we include some WIP's before painting along with the material (short stories, pics from tales of heresy etc) that inspired them to showcase the work of the individuals and the creative process.

Shroud - count me in as a helper to get everything ready for the event too if help is required!

Mortarion - July 12, 2009 08:14 PM (GMT)
Count me in as a helper too, I'm away in the middle of October but if its november/december I will definately be there.

ShroudFilm - July 12, 2009 11:31 PM (GMT)
If the poll keeps going the way it currently is, we're looking at a provisional date of October 24th-25th... I considered Halloween but I figured, being the wholesome upstanding types we are, we'd all be otherwise engaged that weekend...

DaemonlordAbraxes - July 15, 2009 11:18 PM (GMT)
Well i hope everybody that goes has a good time, and Shroud, please send me a souvenoir mini

rohanboi - July 15, 2009 11:31 PM (GMT)
is hampshire anywere needs leeds? as i dont drive and would have to get several trains :|

ShroudFilm - July 16, 2009 10:13 AM (GMT)
We can sort you out with a lift from Burton-on-Trent or Derby... trains run that way without changing, because my sister used to live in Leeds... :D

Book now - it'll be well cheap!

rohanboi - July 16, 2009 03:18 PM (GMT)
true lads ;) i need to get some cash together then :) how much would it be mister shroud :)

ShroudFilm - July 16, 2009 07:38 PM (GMT)
Ok, going by the results of the poll we are assuming the weekend of
Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October.

I have drafted a basic campaign, download it hereHERE and tell me what you think. Anything to be changed?

We're looking at prizes, PH events all day Saturday in addition to the campaign, as well as the lovely nice mushy feeling of geeky comraderie that inevitably ensues from such things... :D As an idea of cost, we're estimating £7.00 for the Saturday, or £10.00 for both.

Anyone got any more suggestions?
