Title: AOTE2 Iron Warriors Lists
Description: A new venture for me...
ShroudFilm - August 23, 2009 04:40 PM (GMT)
After buying a few models from a PH Iron Warriors army, I've been busily working to expand the legion's forces in the same colour scheme... to the exclusion of all else, including my World Eaters!
When the time came to choose an army for AOTE2 in September, I realised I had more ready IW than WE, and so the choice was made for me.

As you can see, I'm looking to have quite a small army, but exceptionally well dug in for a siege! We have multiple Bolster Defences to make use of ruins; Orbital Barrages which can be re-rolled; and those Glacis Fortifications are great, if they work how I think they will... :D
I realised at the last AOTE event that those players who didn't field Primarchs lost a LOT of games... so I think that anyone who doesn't THIS time is going to be even more like the soft filling in an ubermensch sandwich!
I considered having the three Imperial Army siege angines as one squadron, but the increased chances of being wrecked (as per the small print in the squadron rules) and the fact that they would have to all shoot at the same target, meant that I preferred to buy them Extra Armour and sit them well apart on the battlefield.
Comments? Advice?

Some nice looking lists there Shroud...
I definately agree with you on the Primarch inclusion, i would view it as an almost mandatory choice in Marine based armies.
As you mentioned, the only thing that I worry about is the size of some of the lists, especially the Vanguard, where if you take some early casualites then you may find it difficult to hang onto the objectives. Obviously that is a doubles game so you might be able to alleviate that by pairing up with someone with bodies to spare! Ferrous Ironclaw is awesome but that is a lot of points in a 1000 point game... do you have any other named character options?
The Red Angel is very, very good!!!
Definately split up the artillery as you have the slots... while you wont be wanting to move a lot, and therefore you dont get the worst of the squadron rules, they can still be a bit annoying at times

I don't have any other options for non-Terminator characters... the annoying thing about IW is that all their guys are VERY well armoured, making them illegal choices for Vanguard. I thought about Nizpal the tank commander but he is only worth it if you are going to have lots of tanks... which I'm not.
Ferrous has the Orbital Bombardment, which I used in the Deathblow against Lord Monkey's Orks at the last AOTE (and destroyed a Trukk and killed him Warboss on the opening turn!) plus he can Bolster Defences AND he's a lot harder than the average Master of the Forge.
Yes he is expensive but he has more wounds, more attacks, OB which can be re-rolled, AND a Conversion Beamer. I see him killing lots with a good setup... he's a one-man-army. The Red Angel will hopefully scare the pants off people while Ferrous actually does the nasty work.
I am concerned by my small squad sizes though. Although I won't be facing Orks (in mobz of 30?!) I think a Tactical squad of 20 men will still kill my 5 Assault Marines if I get charged...

Out of interest have you playtested any of these lists yet?
I'm having a go with an 1800pt list (although against Eldar) tomorrow and with a similarly small but Elite list, will let you know how it goes...

I've playtested the basic units but my opponent didn't want me to use TF rules so everything was a bit of an anti-climax. Artillery re-rolls WOULD have won me the game.
Small units are fine as long as you keep them hidden. I've got some tactics brewing in my head, and Siege Sergeants got better in the final pack. Woot!
H-Gate - September 3, 2009 11:15 PM (GMT)
Gah... why would your opponent not let you use the TF entries? Sounds like a damned loyalist to me!!!
I think that due to the fact that most "horde" armies are now out of the question that most people will steer away from 20 strong units this time in favour of flexibility (which you have).
I think that the Vanguard and Heavy assault missions will kinda sort themselves out as they are "standard" 40k and we are therefore used to them. From Planetstrike playtesting that myself and Wolf Lord Mjolnir have played, I would say that it is essential that you have roles figured out for your force in these games... have you had a chance to playtest the Planetstrike games yet?
I get the feeling that it is in the 2 planetstrike games that people will suffer if they have not used their forces before.
Some nefarious schemes we need to hatch at the Heretic's Council in Bugman's on the 11th methinks!!!

I had a game last night and took an absolute pasting at the hands of Eldar (well, it was a draw, I had the marine modelled with only 1 arm just holding an objective by the end, but that doesn't detract from the fact I got pwn'd! ^_^)
It was a beardy list (units of Warwalkers with those scatter lasers that wipe out a squad a turn etc.) but the fact was I didn't use any of the units properly. Vanguard are just too expensive and vulnerable - my unit with all the power weapons and captain sevruk got wiped out before it could fire a shot by some cheesy pixie trick. Maybe using the 'heroic intervention' is the way to go with them?
I would also question the role of reserves in such a small and elite army - my army was so small already, that not having units turn up for 3 turns meant it was more like playing a kill-team game!
ShroudFilm - September 4, 2009 10:57 AM (GMT)
I will not be using Reserves unless the mission requires it. I learned that the hard way!
I have attacked in Planetstrike, and failed to crack the bastion despite 4 turns of assaults with melta bombs! Basically, I knew I had to use Perturabo, as that guy is a one-man Bastion breaker! Deep Strike, twin-flame, assault, S10 +1 penetration, +1 on damage results. Booyah!
