Title: Iron Within... Iron Without... Iron Everywhere!
Description: Last minute AOTE preparation

ShroudFilm - September 4, 2009 12:15 PM (GMT)
In my flurry of action for the AOTE deadline, I have realised I wanted something a bit special and thematic for my scenery... since bastions, aegis and glacis are all required now! :D

I have included a Siege Sergeant in all of my army lists, as the stuff they have access to is just too good to pass up... not least the Glacis Fortification:

Glacis Fortification
This squad are always deployed using the Infiltrate spacial rules, even if the mission would not normally allow them (representing setting up their position prior to the battle). When deployed, the Siege Sergeant and his squad may place a single 6" barricade in front of them (the resin Imperial Barricades made by GW are ideal). The barricade provides and unit with a 4+ cover save while behind it. The Siege Sergeant's squad are free to move away from the cover once the game has begun but must be deployed within 3" of it at the start of the game. No other unit may be deployed in cover with the barricade. The Fortification may be deployed in other cover (such as woods) but the unit only benefits from the highest cover save provided. Alternatively they may reinforce a single 5" section of Aegis Defence Line giving it +1 to its cover saves.

I thought *balls* to giving GW any more money by buying the resin barricades, plus they are only 5" long and would not therefore be making the best use of the Glacis rules! Instead, I got hold of some of Titus Pullo's resin fortifications from DemonWorld (?) and painted them to match our shared IA colour schemes. Here is the first test piece, partially weathered but without scorch marks:

They come up to chest height on a Tactical marine, and they ACTUALLY have a glacis (ie. gently sloped) front! I am just finishing a battle-damaged section, and a slightly wider fire point. Total length of all 3 parts is 6.5 inches, so let's just keep that quiet, eh? ;)

If they look good altogether, I will do my bastion in the same scheme.

Anodyr - September 4, 2009 01:01 PM (GMT)
And there I was expecting Iron Warriors... *facepalm*

Looks nice though - is DemonWorld an online store?

ShroudFilm - September 4, 2009 01:07 PM (GMT)
There will be IW soon... just waiting for the GOOD camera... :D

I believe so, I think they are stickied in the PH bits section?

ShroudFilm - September 4, 2009 03:02 PM (GMT)
Right, worked out how to make my phone take *reasonable* pics...!

These are the Iron Warriors I bought already painted - 6 Tacticals and a Techmarine. I have had to take some others out because they just weren't PH, and also touch these ones up (ie. the IV on the knee pads, and the unified squad markings are all mine, plus I repainted all the bare faces and eyes to make them a bit more 3D!)

The Techmarine will be my Ferrous Ironclaw (no, I can't be bothered to change his power axe for a thunder hammer!) once I touch up his company markings and black line the cabling.

I have been working on a colour scheme to match these minis perfectly, and my Squad contest entry will be the 5-man Tactical squad I created to run alongside these guys! The thing I found hardest was actually matching the silver - the freehand and hazard stripes have been easier than I expected!

Which brings me to...

...my Vehicle contest entry which missed the deadline! It's a stripped-down Leman Russ, I have dubbed "scout variant". I envisaged it being sent ahead (maybe during nightfight missions? ;) ) to clear a path for infantry through battlezones, but being able to defend/attack as required as well.

This was the first time EVER that I tried to freehand hazard stripes, in preparation for my IW army for AOTE, and I was very pleased with the result! I have undertaken more ambitious areas since then, and as long as I take my time I don't find it very hard at all.

Iacton - September 4, 2009 03:17 PM (GMT)
Very atmospheric stuff, Shroud. The tank is really cool actually.

Hero of Istvaan - September 4, 2009 03:22 PM (GMT)
looking good dude, i really like the 'russ!

cant wait to see your squad comp entry! :D

Apologist - September 4, 2009 03:23 PM (GMT)
Lovely stuff – nice atmospheric photographs (gotta love terrain!), and spiffy Iron Warriors too. Great! Much to do in preparation for the campaign weekend?

ShroudFilm - September 4, 2009 03:31 PM (GMT)
Bolster Ruins! BOLSTER RUINS! :D

I still have the following to paint:

Perturabo
The Red Angel (more than half done!)
Siege Sergeant
Bastion

and the following to touch up, if time permits:

5 Assault Marines
Techmarine/Ferrous
Rhino
Razorback
Landspeeder

I'm quietly optimistic, since my IW armoured guys only took an hour each from undercoat to varnish! :D

Pacific - September 4, 2009 05:27 PM (GMT)
Nice work, and I love the atmospheric backgrounds! Are the models actually that dark, or is it the effect in the photograph?

I've just spray painted my Bastion brown for now, want to add some 'additions' to it, but I've got a Landraider and a couple of devestators to do first so it will have to wait and do it if I have time!

ShroudFilm - September 4, 2009 05:39 PM (GMT)
I've not changed the pics in any way, they're straight from my phone. The room has 4 directional lights, which might be why the lighting is so exaggerated?

ShroudFilm - September 5, 2009 10:02 AM (GMT)
One watching of 'The Two Towers' later, and we're done... my 6.5" of Glacis Fortification for AOTE!

Just needs a bit of black lining on the front facing, and then a varnish tonight. Quite pleased with that.

Magos Explorator - September 5, 2009 11:17 AM (GMT)
Sweet Dreadnought, too!

ShroudFilm - September 5, 2009 04:20 PM (GMT)
Cheers - that was another pre-painted purchase but I had to change ALL the company markings, re-do the hazard stripes and black areas, darken the silver and gold, tidy up every edge, apply legion symbols (right leg plate!) and change the wording of the scrolls!

Essentially, I might as well have painted it from scratch...

ShroudFilm - September 6, 2009 10:58 PM (GMT)
Just a quick repost from the contest thread -

Here we have my first 5 completely original Iron Warriors, painted to match the ones above (to the best of my ability!)

I've added some details to the ones I bought pre-painted, in order to unify the whole army. I'm quite pleased with everything, and I've learned a lot about painting flat metallics....

Perturabo next!

ShroudFilm - September 9, 2009 11:10 AM (GMT)
Just finished my Siege Sergeant while watching 'That Peter Kay Thing' on DVD for a few hours last night...

The upper body and arms were pre-painted and tidied to the same level as the rest of the Tactical marines, but I had to pin him to new legs to make it more stable. I was going to build a servo-arm from scratch but luckily one of my local players had a metal one spare!

The most time-consuming bit was painting all the cables different colours, but I'm quite pleased with the result.

Itkovian - September 9, 2009 11:18 AM (GMT)
Wahey! Pokeball! :D

He looks very cool. I seriously need to pick up that BA techmarine at some point...

ShroudFilm - September 9, 2009 11:37 AM (GMT)
Aye - I figured Sergeants get red helmets, Siege Sergeants get a white stripe on top!

Pah, just noticed you can't really see that the arm is black with silver details. Damn camera phone! I nearly went with hazard stripes... but it's now Wednesday!

ShroudFilm - September 10, 2009 10:03 AM (GMT)
Just finished the washes on this one, need to touch up some of the black again:

I picked this model up secondhand, took me quite a while to get the silver smooth over the rougher surfaces, which is why I have added rust and bullet holes to some areas (which haven't really shown up on the pic!)

I wanted to reposition the gunner, but he was caked with so much superglue around the arms that I didn't dare in the end...

EDIT: That mysterious Thunder Hammer wielder behind the speeder might yet see the light of day on here before AOTE, if I knuckle down to it later! ;)

Whitehorn - September 10, 2009 11:16 AM (GMT)
The speeder helmets work really well. Nice feeling for the theme.

Pacific - September 10, 2009 04:21 PM (GMT)
Those guys in the LS look awesome! You've done a good job of removing the chaosyness from the IW guys. Can I ask what weapon do you have underneath?

ShroudFilm - September 10, 2009 06:39 PM (GMT)
Oooh, you cheeky thing! ;)

No weapon underneath, it's a standard 50pt speeder with just the heavy bolter. It's kind of a one-shot kill, but it's fast enough to deny an objective in the last turn, if it comes to that... or to race up and freak out a cautious opponent into attacking that instead of the real threat - the artillery!

Army shot so far:

user posted image

That's about half the 2500pts list, still to finish the Red Angel and Perturabo, and then there are three IA artillery pieces borrowed from Titus Pullo to bring me up to Ordnance speed.

the buzz - September 10, 2009 08:33 PM (GMT)
They look nice and stomp !! - any chance of a close up o those Termys ?

then again, I guess I will see them in person on he 24th Oct !!

Good luck for the weekend - that goes for everyone !

Pacific - September 10, 2009 09:39 PM (GMT)
Haha I didn't mean to be cheeky, did you not remove any of the chaos stuff at all from them?

It looks great though in any case!

ShroudFilm - September 11, 2009 11:09 AM (GMT)
Chaos stuff?

The only Chaos stuff I can think of is the IW shoulder pads which have the star behind them... I would have preferred to use the Silver Skulls pads but the pre-painted minis I bought already had them so I continued the theme.

Pretty much all other components are Imperial. ;) Call it a Heresy-era force...!

The Red Sorcerer - September 11, 2009 12:29 PM (GMT)
Looking good so far!

But that wouldn't be a Razorback in the background, surely? Consider my Loremaster dissaproval noted. :P

ShroudFilm - September 11, 2009 01:10 PM (GMT)
AOTE rules state you can have 0-2... to represent vehicles of a non-STC design with similar capabilities! Honest guv! ;)

If anyone was going to find a way to put lascannons on a Rhino, it was the Iron Warriors.

The Red Sorcerer - September 11, 2009 01:15 PM (GMT)
Pshaw. Rules. :D

Manneus Drath - September 13, 2009 01:47 AM (GMT)
Finally some Iron Warriors stuff! And very well done too!

Almost inspires me to get the lead out with my own Iron Warriors...almost. :P

ShroudFilm - September 13, 2009 09:35 PM (GMT)
Makes a nice little army for display... but oh man, they sucked in my AOTE games! The squads are too small, and the characters too expensive.

I played 5 games - Vanguard Doubles, Planetstrike Attack, Apocalypse Doubles, Planetstrike Defend, and Apocalypse... and of those, I lost all except the last which I won.

1) My units were too small to weather even Rapid Fire bolter shots from enemy units.
2) Although I could take down Rogal Dorn with Terminators and the Red Angel, I couldn't hold objectives.
3) Orbital Strikes are great, when you can re-roll scatter and land Ordnance AP1 on vehicles. You just have to remember to actually DO IT!

Perturabo is however a one-man army. Just don't let him get surrounded by Assault Terminators, because they can turn him into paste in one assault.

Miss Dee - October 3, 2009 11:57 AM (GMT)
very cool, what rules would you use for Perturabo? and would you make a macro cannon for them as he took some off the DA's hands in the Fallen Angles book.

DaemonlordAbraxes - October 3, 2009 02:22 PM (GMT)
Is that the HUGE arse tank? I'm thinkin of making one for the siege of Terra if i go

Miss Dee - October 3, 2009 02:26 PM (GMT)
I think so, be fun to see.

"Whats that tanks weapon?"

"Macro cannon."

"Im not playing you."

Kriegersen - October 8, 2009 11:30 AM (GMT)
this is a nicelittle army man ;) just a shame it diddnt do so well....

ShroudFilm - October 8, 2009 01:20 PM (GMT)
I claim moral high ground in that I killed Rogal Dorn without using my own Primarch. I win! :P

I will be using counts-as Lysander in my own games for Perturabo, but for this event I used the AOTE pack version.

I don't know whether to take IW or WE for the next event, in May.

Lord_Mortirion - October 8, 2009 04:12 PM (GMT)
just go for the one you have most fun playing... yea ya might lose but at the end of the day its takin part and having a laff that counts ...

Mortarion - October 10, 2009 02:45 PM (GMT)
I think IW will be good for the siege, after all they were the ones tasked with tearing down the walls. However the WE were the first through the breach so might get some cool special missions. Either way IŽll be there to hold you back with my BA :-p

ShroudFilm - October 10, 2009 11:07 PM (GMT)
I think I'll wait to see if either Primarch has been made 'uber'... or if my minis are appropriate to the TF rules for them!
